Lemurs
British Naval Base
Found
to
Investigated for Ghosts Hibernate

n what may be a first for the study of

supernatural phenomena, two investigative teams spent two nights at
Devonport Naval Base in Portsmouth,
England, compiling evidence about possible hauntings at the base. According to
base Commander Charles Crighton,
The people who walk here report spiritual activity to me all over the place; its

rampant.
Devonport, the largest naval base in
western Europe, contains one of Plymouths most haunted housesthe
Master Ropemakers House. Built in the
18th century and originally used as the
home for dockyard officials, the house
has been vacant for four years but eventually will become part of a projected visitors center at the base. Many former
residents as well as visitors have reported
ghostly activity in and around the house,
including the ghost of a young girl in
Victorian finery. So one goal of the investigation was to verify or disprove these
hauntings as part of the historical back-

ground of the visitors center.

Two teams, one consisting of psychic
mediums claiming to sense spiritual energy and another of researchers using scientific instruments, explored areas
around the base, including the Master
Ropemakers House and the Hangmans
Cell, where more than 100 French soldiers were executed during the
Napoleonic wars. Results,
however, were mixed.
The researchers noticed
strange orbs and occasional electrical and magnetic
anomalies at various sites
around the base, including
a strange, wispy shape that
floated past one of the
team members. They also
detected
orbs
that
appeared only when the
French national anthem
was hummed or when the
French language was spoken during a sance in the
Hangmans Cell. However, they noted nothing that
conclusively indicated to them that true
supernatural activity was taking place.
Conversely, the team of psychic mediums sensed quite a few figures around
the base, including strong activity in the
Hangmans Cell, especially in the area
below the gallows where the condemned
dropped through the hatch. While the
verdict is still out regarding supernatural
presences on the base, future investigations may provide more information
regarding the strange events that are so
commonly reported there.

During the
Summer

group of researchers from

Philipps University in Marburg,
Germany, recently discovered that
the fat-tailed dwarf lemur (Cheirogaleus
medius) of Madagascar hibernates during the hot winter months, making it the
first known hibernating primate species.
The small, nocturnal primates hibernate
for up to seven months out of the year in
poorly insulated holes where the air temperatures var y dramatically. The body
temperatures of the mammals themselves also var y, to an extent never
before observed in mammals.
The scientists believe that the lemurs
hibernate so that their body temperatures during the hottest part of the year
can fluctuate with their environment
rather than struggle against the extreme
heat. Interestingly, lemurs who sleep in
better-insulated holes apparently awaken at regular intervals. They also do not
suffer from the extremes in body temperature that the hibernating lemurs do.
The findings suppor t the conclusion
that hibernation is used as a defense
against extremes in climate, and is just
as effective in warm climates as in frigid
ones.

Sicilian Village Evacuated

Because of Mysterious Fires
I
n March of 2004, the residents of
Canneto di Caronia, Sicily, were
temporarily evacuated after the government declared a state of emergency
because of a series of seemingly inexplicable spontaneous combustions of
household items.
Since the first reported incident in
mid-Januar y of 2004, when a fishermans television suddenly burst into
flames, dozens of electrical appliances,
including refrigerators, microwave
ovens, washing machines, fuse boxes,
ranges, computers, and air conditioners,
have caught on fire for no apparent reason. Police officers and other officials
reported witnessing overhead electrical
wires and unplugged cables also unaccountably bursting into flames without
cause. Although no one has been
injured, some of the mysterious fires
have destroyed homes in the small village, which is perched between a railway
line and the sea on the Mediterranean
islands rocky northern coast.
As there has been no evidence of
arson, suspicion first centered on the
build-up of electrical energy in grounding wires that run off the nearby electric
railway line. But experts have since discounted this as a possible cause of the
fires. They have also discounted a number of scientific explanations, including
radio waves, emissions from local mobile
telephone facilities, power surges, electrostatic interference from power pylons,
and a rare, natural phenomenon in
which surges of electricity rise from the
earths core as causes of the mysterious
fires. (In fact, when the utility company
cut of f the villages electricity and

10

hooked it up to a generator, not only did

the fires still continue, but their equipment caught fire as well.)
However, not all of the unusual occurrences in the village involved electricity.
Couches, chairs, unplugged table lamps,
and other pieces of furniture have suddenly burst into flames. Cellular telephones and alarm systems go off without

any apparent reason, and televisions,

fans, and other appliances switch on and
off spontaneously.
The investigation has included, among
other things, underground surveys with
high-tech instruments to measure and
monitor geomagnetic, meteorological,
electromagnetic, and electrostatic indexes. But according to regional civil protection chief Tullio Martella, who compared the situation to a scene from
some paranormal film, the team of scientists, engineers, geologists, surveyors,

volcano experts, and even a few paranormal researchers, have been unable to find
any explanation for what is causing the
fires that, with the exception of a brief
respite in March, still occur almost daily.
After visiting the village, representatives from the Committee for the Control of Paranormal Claims also ruled out
the possibility of demons or poltergeists,
issuing a statement that said, The fact
that the phenomenon occurs only when
there are people present makes it hard to
believe that it is a natural, or even supernatural phenomenon. According to
Mayor Pedro Spinnato, however, some
residents are convinced that evil spirits or
the devil are at work and are now calling
for an exorcism of the town.
Father Gabriel Amorth, the Vaticans
chief expert on exorcisms and the honorar y president of the International
Association of Exorcists, said that
domestic appliances are often involved in
cases of demonic behavior and that
demons often make their presence
known via electricity. Amorth suspects
that the devil is at work and has urged
parish priest Don Antonio Cipriani to
take action.
According to one villager, the fires
have made at least 12 of the villages 20
houses uninhabitable. Mayor Spinnato
said that someone even wrote him, saying that the solution was to sacrifice a
black goat and collect its blood. The
mayor then jokingly added, At some
point, thats going to start looking like a
good idea.

Astronomy Helps to Revise

Date of Original Marathon
H
undreds of thousands of runners from all over the world
run marathons each year, a 26mile race commemorating the fatal run
of a fifth-century BC soldier, following a
fierce battle between Greek city-states
and Persian troops. Scientists, however,
have

long questioned the story; could such a

run on September 12, the traditional
date of the battle, really have been deadly? Now, investigators have found astronomical evidence that pushes back the
date a full month, thus making the story
more plausible.
According to the Greek historian
Herodotus, following a sea battle
between Greek and Persian forces, Pheidippidesa Greek warrior well-known
for his long-distance runningmade the
26-mile journey nonstop, from the
coastal town of Marathon to the city of

12

Athens to announce the victor y and

warn of a possible sea attack against the
city. He then succumbed to the heat and
died.
Temperatures in September in Greece
are usually fairly temperate, around 83
degrees Fahrenheit, which has cast
doubt that a seasoned runner would
collapse and die when many amateurs make the same trek on the
same route year after year, without
incident.
While Herodotus provided
descriptions of the moons
phases in his account of the battle, 19th-century scholar August
Boeckh used the Spartans
lunar calendar to date some
events and the Athenian calendar for others.
According to Donald
Olson, along with colleagues Marilynn Olson and Russell Doescher of
the University of Texas at San Marcos, the date for the battle and
subsequent run are based largely
on the timing of an earlier 150-mile run
to Spar ta made by Pheidippides to
request the Spartans assistance against
the Persians.
Although the Spartans agreed to join
the coalition, they postponed their
departure for six days until the next full

moon, so they could celebrate a religious festival. Boeckh assumed that the
festival mentioned was the festival of
Karneia in the Spar tan month of
Karneios and then jumped to the Athenian lunar calendar to determine the
September date for the battle.
Olson argues, however, that Boeckh
should have followed the Spartan calendar throughout. Since the Spartan calendar began later in the year than the Athenian calendarand since there were 10
new moons instead of the usual nine
between the fall equinox of 491 BC (the
beginning of the Spartan year), and the
summer solstice of 490 BCthe Spartan
calendar was therefore a full month
ahead of Athens, which pushes the date
of the battle back to August.
On an August date, due to temperatures that often soar to 102 degrees
Fahrenheit in Greece, heat stroke or heat
exhaustion could easily affect even the
toughest athletes, making it a little
more plausible that he keeled over and
died, according to Doescher. Although
this years Olympians followed Pheidippides original route on August 29,
thankfully, the race began at 6 p.m. local
time, long after the days heat had
reached its peak.

Uranium-Eating
Bacteria: The Next
Great Energy Source?

esearchers have long been

exploring the merits of
using bacteria for disposing of toxic substances. For several years, their use has revolutionized the clean-up of oil spills in
coastal areas. Now, promising
results are coming from a long-

term test at a uranium waste field

in Rifle, CO. Left behind from mining that yielded huge amounts of
yellowcake, or uranium oxide,
for nuclear weapons more than
30 years ago, the tailings have
been gradually seeping into the
ground and heading for the nearby Colorado River. This highly soluble form of uranium can easily
contaminate soil and groundwater, sickening or even killing
plants, animals, and people.
For three years, the Depar tment of Energy has been testing
the use of the Geobacter bacteria to break down the lethal uranium into an insoluble form that
can be scooped up and removed
like sand, all with little more than
the occasional dose of ordinar y
vinegar. The bacteria actually
thrive in areas contaminated by

uranium oxides, exchanging

atoms with the vinegar compounds and processing them into
a mineral-like form called uraninite. Tests of similar types of
microbes at the Oak Ridge
National Laborator y in Tennessee, where contaminated
material was dumped into pits
and then paved over, have yielded
similarly promising results.
Another possible use for these
unassuming yet power ful
microbes is as a power source
since Geobacter can also generate electricity by breaking down
iron par ticles. The resulting current has been used successfully
to power calculators, light bulbs,
and even a toy car. Although the
amounts of energy generated are
still small, Derek Lovley, discoverer of the bacteria and head of the
Geobacter Project, claims that
the process is more efficient than
traditional methods of generating
energy, such as burning wood.
He suggests that using bacteria to produce ener gy may
become a valuable resource in
developing countries as well as in
remote areas where other methods of generating power are
unfeasible. The Depar tment of
Defense, for example, is now
exploring utilizing the microbes to
power under water sensors and
other equipment that has been
placed in iron-rich sediments on
the bottom of the ocean.

Mummy Poses New Questions

When Viewed in Virtual Reality

he same technology
that allows doctors to
diagnose diseases
unobtrusively has now provided archaeologists, forensic
pathologists, and the general
public a rare opportunity to
virtually unwrap a mummy
while preser ving it for later
study. To pioneer this new
type of noninvasive exploration, in late 2003, the
British Museum analyzed the
mummy of Egyptian priest
Nesperennub; in effect, peering inside its wrappings for
the first time in more than
2,800 years.
In collaboration with the
British branch of Silicon
Graphics Inc., an American

company specializing in virtual

imaging technology, John Taylor, a curator for the Museums
Egyptian collection, developed
a method that combined scans
of the mummy with 3D computer animation to create a virtual mummy that can be seen
from all angles.
Quite a few surprises lay
beneath the linen, resin, and
plaster, including the discovery
of a jar of resin that was found
glued to the mummys head.
Taylor theorizes that the
embalmers were using the resin
inside the dish, but forgot
about it at some point during
the mummification process and
were unable to remove it after
the resin had solidified and

attached itself to the back of the

mummys head.
Another puzzle lies in a strange hole,
similar to a bullet hole, located near his
brain. Scientists are unsure as to its origins, and even more puzzled by the fact
that it apparently caused major destruction of tissue inside the cranium but was
not the cause of death. Since no other
signs of disease were found, neurologists
have been unable thus far to pinpoint it
as a tumor or another form of illness.
The virtual version of Nesperennub,
along with the still sealed sarcophagus in
which he was laid to rest, are now the
centerpiece of a new exhibit at the
British Museum, and will be on display
through January of 2005.

a professor of Italian histor y and literature at Connecticuts Wesleyan University, said that, with the help of a recently discovered encr ypted letter, he had solved a

during a High Mass in Florences Duomo

Lorenzo managed to escape death by barricading himself behind the bronze sacristy
doors.
Up until now, historians have believed
that the attack was engineered by rival
banker Francesco de Pazzi. Behind the
Pazzis were a number of power ful people
who wanted to destroy the Medicis and
their expansionist ambitions for the Florentine state, including Pope Sixtus IV and
King Fer rante of Naples. According to

Fears Grow for Fate of Machu Picchu

ccording to Francisco Bandarin, chief
of UNESCOs cultural heritage
depar tment, Machu Picchu, the
fabled stronghold where the last of the Inca
rulers may have held out against the conquistadors who overran their empire in the
early 16th centur y, is now in peril from
tourism.
When the ruins were first discovered in
the early 20th centur y by explorer Hiram
Bingham, the dense jungle surrounding
their location in the southern Andes of Peru
made the site nearly inaccessible. In fact,
Bingham himself got lost on a return visit
and was never seen again. Now, more than
a thousand tourists visit the magnificent
ruins daily, loaded onto buses in the nearby

Letter Sheds Light on a Historical Murder

town of Aguas Calientes.

After his visit in October, 2003, Bandarin
expressed worr y that the high volume of
tourists may eventually harm the ancient
ruins. So on his advice, the International
Council on Monuments and Sites has recommended that the UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization place Machu
Picchu, which is already on its list of World
Monuments, on its list of endangered
sites. By bringing attention to Machu Picchus plight, more resources may be allocated to help save this archaeological treasure for future generations.

Roman Coin Provides Clue to

Unknown Roman Emperor

n February of 2004, experts from

the British Museum announced that
the image on a Roman
coin discovered by a metal
detectorist in Oxfordshire,
England, has been identified as Domitianus, a mysterious Roman emperor
about whom so little is
known that up until now,
some experts doubted that
he even existed.
Historical sources contain only two
known references to Domitianus. The
first, by the Byzantine historian
Zosimus, recorded only that Domitianus
was punished for treason by the Emperor Aurelian, who ruled from 270 to 275
AD. The other, a notoriously unreliable

compendium called the Historia Augusta, stated that a high-ranking army officer named Domitianus was
involved in a military uprising during Aurelians reign.
The only other known
evidence regarding Domitianus is a coin found in the
Loire region of France in
1900. Since Domitianus
name was then unknown
and the coin was uniqueit
was dismissed as a hoax.
However, after conservators at the
British Museum painstakingly separated
a hoard of more than 5,000 common
Roman coins that had become fused
together in a third-century AD earthenware pot, and identified the image and

inscription on a bronze coin as referring

to Domitianus, experts discovered that
the two coins match perfectly. Since the
Oxfordshire coin was fused with coins
that date from 250 AD to about 275
AD, which was a time of great upheaval
for the teetering Roman Empire, experts
now consider the coin proof that Domitianus existed. They now believe that
Domitianus was an upstart from the
Roman legion who briefly seized power
of the breakaway Gallic Empire (which
included modern England, France, and
parts of Germany), a reign that probably
lasted for 15 years, before being ousted
for treason for daring to declare himself
emperor.

Unusual Planetary Formation Baffles Scientists

sing data gathered from analysis of both planets, computer

models, and lab experiments, scientists have discovered
that while Saturn may have a large, solid core comprised of
heavy elements, Jupiter may have no core at all.
Although the chemical and mineral composition of the two planets is similar, Jupiters elements are dispersed throughout the
hydrogen gas that makes up 70 percent of the planet, leaving it
with little or no solid core. Saturn, on the other hand, has a large,
solid core that is surrounded by swirling gas and rings
of debris.
The vast differences in the composition of
the two planets are disturbing to many scientists, who are unsure how to reconcile
current theories of planet formation with
the apparent reality.
The most common theor y for the formation of giant planets involves the gradual formation of a core comprised of rock
and ice several times the size of the Ear th.
Once the core reaches this size, scientists

16

believe that the cores gravity begins to attract gases, sucking

them into its orbit as it moves through the solar system. However,
this process is believed to occur over millions of years, and analysis of various plaentary systems, such as Jupiters, indicate that
these gases are collected much more rapidly. So some
scientists are beginning to think that a giant
ball of gas may sometimes collapse under
its own weight, congealing into a planet
in a much shorter span of time.
These theories may explain the
differences between Jupiter and
Saturn, but scientists are reluctant to speculate that two dramatically different processes may have occurred during the formation of our solar system, since it is difficult to have them
functioning simultaneously in the early solar system and still
achieve the results that we see in the night sky.

Cambridge, MA, have recently completed a study that explored the links
between memories, whether real or imagined, and the psychological and physical
stresses associated with them. Their
research revealed that people who have
endured verifiably traumatic situations and
those who have experienced less verifiable
situations (such as alien abductions) have
similar physical and psychological reactions when those memories are recalled.
This indicates that, regardless of whether
the event was real or not, the trauma associated with the event definitely is.
The study involved two groups, one con-

as victims of alien abductions, and a second
group who had experienced other types of
traumatic situations, such as violence or
war. Both groups were read brief narratives
from the experiences described by the
abductees as well as narratives based on
happier experiences. While the control group
had little reaction to any of the narratives,
when the scripts recalling the traumatic
encounters were played, the abductees
experienced highly stressful reactions,
including profuse sweating, heightened muscle tension, and an increased heart rate.
Other psychological factors were also
considered during the study, including the

worldviews of its par ticipants. In general,

those who referred to themselves as victims of alien abductions were more openminded, more likely to hold non-conventional beliefs, and more likely to have a richer
fantasy life than those in the control group.
Despite the obvious stress that recalling
these events triggered, their reaction is not
necessarily proof that the event recalled

event, but the belief that it actually

Humans and Neanderthals

Unrelated, Now Say Scientists

ince the identification of Neander thals in the 19th centur y,

anthropologists have been split
into two factions regarding their relationship to
modern humans. Some
believe that Homo sapiens
are a separate species that
evolved in Africa more
than 150,000 years ago
and spread out to replace
indigenous archaic populations, including Neanderthals, without interbreeding with them. The
opposing view holds that
the migrants from Africa
bred to some extent with
the populations they
encountered. These other
groups would, therefore,
be at least partly ancestral
to modern Europeans and
a subspecies of Homo sapi-

ens.
However, a study published in December of 2003 concludes that Neander thals,
who
first
appeared in the fossil
record 190,000 years ago
in Europe, where they
dominated for 100,000
years before disappearing
shortly after the arrival of
modern humans, are a separate species from Homo
sapiens.
Led by Dr. Katerina
Harvati, a paleoanthropologist at New York University, the researchers collected data on 15 standard
features of the craniums of
more than 1,000 primate
skulls, including Neanderthals, early and modern
humans, and 12 species of
non-human primates, such

as chimpanzees, gorillas, baboons, and

monkeys. They then converted the data
into 3D coordinates for each skull and
then superimposed the sets on top of one
another.
Using statistical analysis to compare
the measurable variations in the shape of
the skulls, the researchers found that the
differences between the skulls of modern
humans and those of Neanderthals were
greater than those found between subspecies of populations of any single
group studied. They also found that the
differences between Neanderthals and
Homo sapiens are as great or greater than
those of any closely related primate
species, such as humans, gorillas, and
chimpanzees.
The study concludes that since modern
humans are as dif ferent from Neanderthals as they are from, for example,
gorillas, Neanderthals were probably a
distinct species of the genus Homo, rather
than a subspecies of Homo sapiens and
that it is unlikely that they contributed to
the human gene pool.

claims that a mysterious Mesoamerican
writing system had been deciphered.
Translating the writing system of one
of the languages used on Mexicos Isthmus of Tehuantepec between 500 BC
and 500 AD would help unlock the mysteries of the lost societies of ancient
America prior to the Maya civilization.
Only about ten examples of the Isthmian
script were known to exist, however, and
scholars remained mystified by its symbols until 1993, when anthropologists
John S. Justeson of the State University
of New York at Albany and Terrence
Kaufman of the University of Pittsburgh
reported that they had deciphered the
Isthmian inscriptions found on a large,
second-century AD stone stele from Veracruz, Mexico. However, the available

Justesons and Kaufmans proposed decipherment of the writing system.
Until the recent discovery of the Teo
Mask in a private collection, the available
examples of the language were insufficient for others to confirm the proposed
decipherment. The Mesoamerican relic,
which dates to around 400 AD, is
inscribed with an extensive number of
Isthmian symbols, enough text for scholars to evaluate the purported meaning of
the hieroglyphs as published by Justeson
and Kaufman.
After applying the meanings of the symbols to the mask, Houston and Coe found
only nonsensical patterns and semantic
mishmash. They have concluded that
Justeson and Kaufmans translation is
incorrect and that the ancient writing system remains undeciphered.

predate the first known machines of similar design by nearly 500 years.
Most jade ornaments were believed to
have been car ved either by hand or by
simple machines. The spiral rings, originally found in burial chambers of ancient
rulers and nobles and now exhibited at
the Smithsonian, are the first evidence
that more complex machinery may have
been used much earlier than first
thought. Lu also suggests that this
machine may also be the predecessor of
other machines, such as cranks, milling,

have served as agricultural tools in early
China.

Fabled Rogue Waves Not

as Rare as Once Thought
F
or thousands of years, mariners
have described gigantic waves in
deep ocean waters, waves that
could sink a ship without a trace. These
fearful tales, however, have often been
brushed off as exaggerations, or worse
excuses to draw attention away from
damage or destruction that was believed
to be caused by poor handling of the
ship, rather than the forces of nature.
But recent satellite images of the worlds
oceans have revealed walls of water nearly ten stories high, and in much higher
numbers than previously suspected.
In 2001, the European Space Agency
used two of its satellites to take radar
imagettes of the seasrectangular pic-

tures measuring 6 by 2.5 milesapproximately every 120 miles. Of the more

than 30,000 images taken over a threeweek period, at least 10 of these were of
rogue waves, all measuring more than 80
feet high. Ironically, during the course of
the study, two tourist vessels, the Bremen
and the Caledonian Star, had close
encounters with monstrous waves that
shattered the bridge windows and left
the ships disabled for several hours.
Previously, oceanographers believed
that dramatic fluctuations in ocean waves
were extremely rare, occurring perhaps
only once in a thousand years. So these
new findings are forcing scientists to
rethink their views. The next step is to

analyze if they can be forecasted, says

Wolfgang Rosenthal, a senior scientist
with the GKSS Research Centre in
Geesthacht, Germany.
Research continues with a new study
called Wave Atlas, which will use reports
from the satellites to compile a database
of giant waves and a collection of related
statistics that may enable scientists to
better understand this terrifying phenomena, and to predict its devastating
effects. The ongoing study may also help
architects to better design ships, research
platforms, and oil rigs, so that they can
withstand a hit by a rogue wave.

Black Holes May Not Be So Black, After All

lack holes have a fearsome reputation in the astronomical community;

the common perception of them is
as vortices so powerful that not even light
can escape from their swirling interiors.
Now, physicist Stephen Hawking says that
these mysterious objects created by stars
that collapse under their own weight may
not be quite so for midable as once
thought. A presentation at a seminar in
July, 2004, at Cambridge University may
solve a paradox that has long perplexed
scientists; namely, how can the radiation
emitted by a black hole lose all of the information associated with it?
In the 1970s, Hawking proposed that
the radiation emitted by black holes,
referred to as Hawking radiation, was
essentially blank, stripped of all information about the black holes interior by the

cannot be completely obliterated.
Hawking argued that the gravitational
forces within a black hole were so strong
that the laws of quantum physics no longer
applied, an explanation that left many
skeptical. But he has now softened his
stance, stating that black holes do not seal
themselves off entirely, and as they emit
more heat, the amount of information
released also increases, a statement that
intrigues many both within and outside the
scientific community.
Its possible that what he presented in
the seminar is a solution, says Gary Gibbons, a black hole exper t who attended
the Cambridge conference, but I think you
have to say that the jury is still out.

ANTIGRAVITY

Slipping the Bounds of Earth

Antigravity has been
dismissed as nothing more
than a scientific parlor trick.
For true believers, though,
the technology could open
a new era of human history.

he mystifying acrobatics of
unidentified flying objects, the
mysterious aircraft from Area 51,
the lost continent of Atlantiswhat do all
these unexplained mysteries have in common? If some researchers are to be
believed, they are all powered by a mysterious source known as antigravity.
The discover y of antigravity would
drastically change our world. Imagine
being able to fly hundreds of miles just as
easily as driving to the store, power your
house with pollution-free energy, or
spend a weekend on the Moon. Space
travel and mining raw materials from
other planetsand even the asteroid
beltwould become as economical as flying to Europe. Humanity would finally
slip the bounds of the world to which we
have been shackled and become a truly

interplanetary race.
However, to understand antigravity, it
is necessary first to understand gravity.
Simply put, gravity is the force of attraction between two objects. Not only does
it keep us firmly rooted to the ground,
but it also keeps the Earth in orbit around
the sun and the stars within their galaxies.
The thing is, although Einstein adequately explained gravity as the curvature
of space-time caused by massand
though its effects can be reliably predictedno one really knows whether it is a
product of yet-undiscovered subatomic
particles called gravitons or is some
sort of energy, or both.
Particle v. Wave
n the 1920s, scientists including
Alber t Einstein, Niels Bohr, and
Arthur Holly Compton demonstrated that light functions both as a particle
and a wave. Antigravity, then, could be
either a particle with the opposite charge
of a graviton, a means of shielding an
object from gravitons (or gravitronic radiation), or both. The problem is, according to physics as it is now understood, to
create antigravity would require such
massive amounts of energy that it would
be virtually impossible to achieve.
Nonetheless, this has not stopped scientists from tr ying to overcome the
effects of gravity. In 1993, the reclusive
Russian scientist Eugene Podkletnov was
on the verge of publishing his findings in
the prestigious British Journal of PhysicsD when news of his antigravity device
was broken in the British Sunday Telegraph. In the ridicule that ensued, Podkletnov withdrew his paper and retreated

The Genesis of a New Religion

TIM SWARTZ

Could it be that we are now

by Tim Swartz
ince 1947, when pilot Kenneth
Arnold first spotted unidentified
flying objects over Washington
State and coined the term flying
saucer, most people have believed that
UFOs are spacecraft operated by
extraterrestrial visitors to Earth. However, after more than 50 years of investigation and research, no one has managed
to offer a satisfactor y explanation on
the true nature of
UFOs.
In fact, many
people who have
repor ted having a
UFO encounter say
that their lives have
been changed by
the
experience,
often in a spiritual
sense. Some have
supposedly been visited by highly
advanced, angelic
entities whom they

imminent danger while a few have even
been told that they were actually chosen to lead humans to an eventual communion with the benevolent aliens.
Although these tales make most ufologists uncomfor table due to their
allegedly unscientific nature, these
encounters appear to show a deliberate
attempt to connect otherworldly entities with spirituality.
Some people wonder why we do not
see miracles today like those referred to
in ancient religious writings such as the
Bible, which are filled with tales of
angelic beings, strange wonders in the
skies, and divinely inspired prophets. But
these events are actually occurring today
on a daily basis throughout the world.
Rather than angels from God, spacemen
from the Pleiades deliver prophetic messages of doom or salvation to contactees.
In fact, the gods and goddesses of old
have not disappeared; they have merely
traded in their white beards and robes
for spacesuits and helmets.
Saviors from the Stars
hen UFO contactees in the
early 1950s began to describe
their alleged encounters with
extraterrestrials, their stories seemed too
fantastic to believe. Yet the tales of
angelic Space Brothers who are here to
help guide mankind from its evil ways
struck a cord with those who were raised
in an atmosphere of scientific materialism. Since science had supposedly

but also whose appearance and philosophies seemed more divine than physical.
Like many who have had encounters
with UFOs, early religions usually
sprang from just such a visionary experience. For instance, the apostles supposedly saw Jesus resurrected from the
grave and ascend into heaven. Subsequent charismatic visions by people such
as Saul (Paul) helped inspire the rapid
development of early Christianity from a
local cult to a worldwide religion.
Similarly, in the seventh centur y,
Islams prophet Mohammad was visited
by the angel Gabriel who told him that
he was Allahs messenger. Later, Gabriel
supposedly led Mohammad to heaven to
meet God, and then to Jerusalem to
meet Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. Like
Christianity, Islam grew rapidly from
these early mystic experiences.
New religions grow from the roots of
the old, carrying with them various doctrines of belief to ensure their continued
existence. This process is propagated by
the visionary experiences of prophets
and their contacts with divine beings
who deliver messages of spiritual teachings and prophecies for the ever-growing faithful. This system occurs rapidly at
first but then tapers off to a slower but
sustained growth that may take hundreds of years to develop fully. And this
is similar to what we are now experiencing with the UFO phenomena.
It is therefore possible that we may
now be experiencing the genesis of a
new spiritual system based on the belief
of highly advanced, spiritual beings from
outer space. Indeed, many UFO cases
seem to be more visionary than real and
according to many contactees, the ETs
seem to be unduly concerned with the
spiritual affairs of mankind. If anything,
considering their warnings about future
catastrophes and the war-like nature of
man, many aliens act more like guardian
angels than otherworldly astronauts.
In fact, some aliens are described as

W W W. M Y S T E R I E S M A G A Z I N E . C O M

being undistinguishable from humans

except for their extraordinary beauty and
spiritual radiance. On the other hand,
the devil and his demons are represented
by the short, big-eyed Greys, who are
believed responsible for an epidemic of
abductionsand human experimentationthat has dominated the UFO culture for over 20 years. In fact, the UFO
phenomenon appears to be more religious than philosophical. Indeed, religions, like many UFO encounters, distinguish themselves from philosophy by
their supernatural experiences.
Jungian UFOs
hortly before his death, Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung was one of the
first to analyze UFO encounters in
a symbolic way. In a 1951 letter to an
American friend, he wrote,
Im puzzled to death about these
phenomena, because I havent been
able yet to make out with sufficient
certainty whether the whole thing is a
rumor with concomitant singular
and mass hallucination, or a downright fact.
In 1958, Jung concluded that because
of the need for wholeness out of the
increasing fragmentation of the modern
world, it was more desirable for people to
believe that UFOs existed than to believe
that they did not. Jung also thought it
relevant that the shape of a flying saucer
was round, the shape of the ancient Mandala, a spiritual symbol of wholeness.
Additionally, Jung believed that UFOs
were examples of synchronicity, where
external events mirror internal psychic
states. Jung felt that to modern man,
UFOs were modern symbols for the
ancient Gods who used to come to
mans assistance in time of need.
In other words, if one believed in
gods, demons, witches, fairies, or flying
saucers, some unknown higher intelligence would adopt these roles. When
these belief structures became outdated

or forgotten, the entities would simply

assume a different believable guise, in an
attempt either to pacify humanity, so we
would not destroy ourselves before
maturing spiritually, or as a method for
spreading new information and ideas to
assist our spiritual growth.
The key here is that humanity has
developed to the point where we may
have attained scientific knowledge, but
we may still lack the emotional and spiritual development necessar y to deal
with its consequences properly. What
better way to guide an adolescent civilization away from the brink of destruction than to use archetypical religious
imagery that resonates at the deepest
level of our subconscious?
Author and paranormal researcher
John Keel has often stressed that if belief
in extraterrestrials, without verifiable evidence, is left unchecked, there may come
a time when a faith in these entities will
allow them to interfere openly with our
af fairs. While Keel may be overly
alarmed, his idea that there is a developing faith in extraterrestrials may be
correct. Whether or not this faith is being
inspired by extraterrestrials, supernatural
beings who mimic extraterrestrials, or
our own unconscious minds, the fact
remains that we may now be experiencing a new religion unfolding before us.
The next several centuries will show
whether this new UFO religion will
be able to sustain itself. Eventually, its
disciples may end up being responsible
for the scientific developments that will
finally propel mankind off the planet and
into the universe.
Imagine the planet as a dandelion

Urban Legends

(Urban) Legends of the Silver Screen

Many untrue but
compelling stories about
actors circulate every day.

Some believe that

she originally had six

28

by Charles Rammelkamp
rban legends about movie stars
are as plentiful as the stars in
the sky; everybody is interested
in the background and lifestyles of the
rich and famous. Like gossip, some of it
is motivated by an urge to expose them
as strange, perverted, or immoral in an
effort to tarnish their glamour, make
them into figures of fun, or even to raise
our own hopes and self-esteem. Such
stars as Marilyn Monroe, Cal Ripken,

Jim Nabors, and Rock Hudson have all

been the subject of such legends.
Marilyn Monroes Sixth Toe
he rumors about Marilyn Monroe are the stuff of grocery store
tabloidsaffairs with politicians
and mobsters, and pregnant by at least
half a dozen of them when she died. But
the stories that cross the invisible line
from simple gossip to urban legend are
the ones that make her seem freakish
rather than glamorous. For instance, is it
really true that Marilyn Monroe had six
toes on her left foot?
According to legend, she was born
with an extra digit on her left foot,
which was surgically removed early on
in her Hollywood career. This claim
originated with photographer Joseph
Jasgur, who, in March of 1946, took
some test shots of 19-year-old Norma
Jean Dougher ty, who later became
famous as Marilyn Monroe.
Most of Jasgurs pictures of the
teenaged Norma Jean remained unpublished for over 40 years until he collected
them for a book entitled The Birth of
Marilyn: The Lost Photographs of Norma
Jean. It was only then that Jasgur
claimed to have noticed that one photo
revealed that Marilyn had an extra toe on
her left foot.
Yet besides Jasgurs photograph there
is no other evidenceor photosthat
suggests that the young Norma Jean was
born with an extra toe. Nor is there any
record of Monroe having had an operation to remove an extra toe or any contemporary references to anyone noticing
her walking with a bandaged foot or a
limp for a period of time. Moreover, the
actress never confided in anyone about
being born with an extra toe. So the only
evidence of a sixth toe is Jasgurs photo-

graph, which is far from clear.

Still, in the minds of many, where there
is smoke (illusory though it might be)
there is surely fire, so the belief persists.
In fact, the more scandalous and bizarre,
the more the gossip lingers. Take the
stor y about Rock Hudson and Jim
Nabors, for instance.
The Marriage of Hudson and Nabors
efore gay marriage became legal
in some jurisdictions and the
rights of homosexuals a matter of
serious debate, an urban legend that
Rock Hudson and Jim Nabors (Gomer
Pyle on The Andy Griffith Show and later
his own spinoff sitcom) were married,
was circulated since the early 1970s. In
fact, some people referred to Hudson as
Rock Pyle, a comical name alluding to
the legend.
Indeed, though his close friends knew
Hudson was gay, his studio went to
great lengths to hide the truth from his
fans, as both the actor and the studio
believed that if he were outed, it
would destroy his image as a leading
man. He even had a short-lived studioarranged marriage in 1955 to secretary
Phyllis Gates to hide the truth from
rumor-mongers. In fact, Hudson only
publicly admitted that he was gay when
he was dying of AIDS in 1985.
The legend that Hudson and Nabors
were lovers actually began when a couple
of homosexuals in Huntington Beach

Jim Nabors and Rock Hudson were friends

but never lovers

W W W. M Y S T E R I E S M A G A Z I N E . C O M

sent out engraved

invitations for a
party, saying You
are cordially invited
to the wedding
reception of Rock
Hudson and Jim
Nabors.
Soon, a copy of
the invitation had
spread across the country, and the story
was widely believed to be true by a public eager for scandal. Whether as a result
of the stor y or for other reasons,
Nabors career as a popular singer never
took of f, and Hudsons went into
decline. But even more tragically, Hudson and Nabors, who were friends but
never loverslet alone marriedwere
so self-conscious about feeding the
rumor that they were never seen in public together again.
The Costner-Ripkin Affair
umors of infidelity are a staple of
gossip and sometimes are so
potent that they rise to the level
of urban legend. Such is the rumor that
in 1997, actor Kevin Costner was caught
in bed with Kelly Ripken, wife of Baltimore Orioles infielder Cal Ripken, Jr.,
who was in pursuit of Lou Gehrigs
seemingly untouchable consecutivegames record. According to the urban
legend, the Orioles canceled the game
that evening so that the distraught Ripken would not have to attend the game.
(Ripken would go on to beat Gehrigs
record of 2,131 consecutive games
played by over 500 games.)
The story was that Ripken had invited
Costner to stay at his house in Baltimore while working on The Postman.
Ripken left for Camden Yards to play in
a game that August, but on his way to
the ballpark, he realized that he had left
something at his house and returned to
retrieve it. When he got home, he found
Costner in bed with his wife and pro-

ceeded to beat up the actor.

Costner was said to have been beaten
so badly that he was supposedly unable
to make any publicity appearances for
quite sometime afterward. Meanwhile, a
distraught Ripken called the Orioles
manager to say that he would not be
able to play in that evenings game.
Upon hearing this, Peter Angelos, the
Orioles owner, had the game cancelled
in order to preserve Ripkens streak of
consecutive games played. Publicly, the
reason that the game was canceled was
from an electrical failure with some
lights on the field. But according to legend, all the lights in the stadium and in
the surrounding neighborhood were
working perfectly that night. The next
day, the lights were fixed, and Ripken,
having regained his composure, was
able to play.
In truth, the game between the Orioles and the Seattle Mariners was indeed
cancelled when a ground-fault interrupt
kept tripping the circuit breaker each
time the lights in the right-field bank
were turned on.
Indeed, the story of Ripken and Costnerlike the stories of Hudson, Nabors
and Monroedemonstrate how gossip
and urban legend can intersect. Gossip is
ephemeral and usually shared by those
with a personal interest in the stories,
whereas urban legends seep into the
imaginations of a large, faceless audience,
transforming unassailable, even godlike
humans into ludicrous, fallible people
and elevating the merely tawdry to sensational truth. z

HMS Oxford, a 17th-century frigate that
belonged to one of the most famous
buccaneers of all time
Captain Henr y Morgan.

before dying in 1688.
A large number of artifacts, including
cannons, drawer handles, muskets, musket balls, and powder barrels, have been
found at the site, which lies in only 12
feet of water. The researchers will survey
the 150-foot-long ship, which sank in

Researchers
believed that the

were pieces of the

they were found in a
relatively straight line and because several of the massive pieces were broken
into two or three fragments, indicating
that they had fallen from a great height.
This has been confirmed by an American scholar, who has identified five
Greek letters inscribed on one of the
pieces, letter that were supposedly
inscribed on part of the lighthouse.
The team also found several pieces of
rose granite that have proven to be the
legs and ankles of a famous statue of Isis,
part of which was discovered nearby four
years ago. In addition, they located
colossal statues of King Ptolemy that
supposedly stood at the foot of lighthouse, as well as a missing part of a large

from the sea bed a few years ago, which
they found inscribed with the tax law of
Ptolemy I.

The coins and the cannon date to

Medieval Treasure Ship

Salvaged in Korean Waters

n June of 2004, archaeologists

working off the west coast of Korea
salvaged a medieval wooden cargo
vessel and more than 8,700 artifacts,
including the ships stem, anchor, and
strings, and thousands of pieces of 11thcentury celadon stoneware that date to
the Koryo Kingdom (918-1392).
After an exploration team documented the wreck (originally discovered by a
fisherman in September of 2003) and
removed the mud from its surface, the
ship was disassembled and its sections
were lifted from 60-footdeep waters using air
bags and a crane.
Following further study and conservation, the ship
will be taken to a
museum in Mokpo,
Korea, where it will be
exhibited. Experts hope
that the medieval vessel, which measures
23 feet long and approximately eight feet
wide, will yield clues to the development
of shipbuilding during the Koryo period.

n July of 2004, 6,000 pieces of precious Ming porcelain were salvaged

from the wreckage of a 17th-century
Portuguese merchant ship that was discovered five miles
of f the coast of
Malaysia.
A distinctive
coat-of-arms found
on a bottle on the
ship, which lies 120
feet beneath the
water, has led
archaeologists to
believe that the 63foot-long vessel
was built by the
Portuguese in the
Philippines and was
then used to transpor t goods to
China. According
to Adi Taha, the
director
of
Malaysias Department of Museums
and Antiquities,
the ship was probably attacked and
sunk by competitors in the early
1600s while en
route from China
to the Dutch outpost of Batavi in present-day Jakarta, Indonesia.
Many of the items recovered from the
wreckthe first Portuguese shipwreck
ever found in Malaysian waterswere
produced at the imperial kilns at
Jingdezhen and Zhangzhou. Among
them were bowls, plates, and vases
inscribed with the mark of Emperor
Chenghua, who ruled China from 1465
to 1487. Other artifacts found bear the
mark of 16th-century Chinese Emperor
Chia-ching. Also recovered was a long
keris (a Malay dagger said to have mysti-

cal properties that protects the wearer).

Approximately 20% of the blue and
white porcelain salvaged during the
two-month-long operation are in pristine condition despite having been
underwater for nearly four centuries.
Malaysias Museums Department will
exhibit much of the recovered items,
which are estimated to be wor th
between $1.1 and $2.3 million. The
remainder may be auctioned off by the
archaeological company that financed
the salvage operation.

Rescue Ship Carpathia

n July of 2004, an international

team of divers captured the first
video footage of the wreck of the
RMS Carpathia, the ship that rescued
705 sur vivors from the Titanic in

1912. Five people lost their lives when

the Carpathia sunk six years later after
being torpedoed by a German U-boat.
The site of the wreck, which lies 500
feet beneath the Atlantic Ocean and
about 160 miles southeast of Ireland, was
located by U.S. divers in 1999. It was
first reached in 2001 by the same team
that carried out the recent 11-day dive.
The team was backed by the company
that owns the wreck, RMS Titanic, Inc.
In addition to filming the wreckage,
the divers explored the ship and recovered a number of historical artifacts,
including the nameplate from the

was awarded to the ship and her captain
by the survivors of the Titanic. z

JOHN HAMILL

On July 23, 1777, British troops

under General Charles Cornwallis left
New York in an ef for t to capture
Philadelphia, the capital of the fledgling
United States of America. They traveled
down the Atlantic coast in 260 ships,
sailing around the Delmarva Peninsula,
past Cape Charles, VA, and then up to
the north Chesapeake Bay. On August
25, some 16,000 troops disembarked at
Elk River, located near the head of the
bay. From there, the invaders began
marching inland toward Philadelphia.
As the British army moved through
Delaware, a special corps of patriot
marksmen, commanded by General
William Maxwell, moved to slow the
advance so that General George Washington could evacuate Philadelphia
before the British arrived. The resulting clash, fought on August 30, 1777,
became known as the Battle of Coochs
Bridge.
In light of the relatively small number
of forces engaged in battle that day, historians have always termed it a skirmish.
But to proud Delaware natives, Coochs
Bridge was most definitely a battle. Earlier that year, Betsy Ross had sewn the
new flag of the republic and legend has it
that the Battle of Coochs Bridge was
the first land battle in which the Stars
and Stripes were carried.
The battle began when Maxwells

forces, concealed in thick woods along

the side of the road on which the British
were advancing, began their ambush.
The commander of the British vanguard,
Lieutenant Colonel Ludwig von
Wurmb, later wrote that,
the countr y was closethe woods
within shot of the road frequently in
front and flank and in projecting
point towards the road. Here the rebels
began to attack us about 9 a.m. with
continued irregular fire for nearly
two miles.
Mimicking tactics learned from Native
Americans, the rebels hid behind trees
and rocks, keeping up a heavy fire without presenting targets against which the
British could reply in kind. After taking
their shots, the Americans would fall
back, reload, and shoot again. During
the running battle, several dozen Patriot
soldiers hid in the graveyard of Welch
Tract Church, concealed behind stone
walls and tombstones.
After their volley alerted the Red
Coats to their position, the British
quickly brought up light cannons and
began lobbing cannonballs into the
cemetery, in an attempt to dislodge the
enemy.
One of the soldiers caught among the
deadly cannonade was Charlie Miller. At
the tender age of 15, he was the
youngest American soldier involved in

that days fighting. Perhaps it was

navet born of youth, or maybe he was
one of that rare breed of man who seemingly knows no fear, but according to
legend, Miller sat proud and erect upon
his white horse during the bombardment instead of seeking shelter like his
companions.
It turned out to be a fatal error in
judgment. A cannonball took his head
clear off from his shoulders. And yet,
Millers decapitated body continued to
sit erect in the saddle. It has been said
that young Millers white stallion, with
his headless corpse still astride it, galloped off into the smoky gloom and was
never seen again not in mortal form, at
any rate.
With superior numbers and their
enemy rapidly running out of ammunition, the British soon flushed out the
American skirmishers from their hiding
places and, in the words of von Wurmb,
put them to flight. The Battle of
Coochs Bridge was won at a cost of perhaps 30 Red Coats killed and a roughly
equal number wounded. The Americans
suffered a total of 40 casualties, among
them Charlie Miller.
Maxwell to the Rescue
nstead of following up their victory
with a rapid march on Philadelphia,
the British spent the next ten days

gathering strength and scouring the

area for horses before resuming the
advance. During this time, General
Cornwallis stayed in the Cooch House,
and in retaliation for Thomas Cooch,
Sr. serving as a rebel captain, he had the
family mill burned.
After this brief reprieve, the British
march resumed, culminating in the Battle of Brandywine, which was fought
against 10,000 rebels on September 1011, 1777. And according to legend, the
ghost of Charlie Miller was there, too,
fighting alongside his companions one
last time.
At one point in the battle, General
Maxwells light infantry (the same unit
with whom Miller had ser ved at the
Battle of Coochs Bridge) launched a
counterattack against an entrenched
party of the British 49th Regiment and
Royal Artillery. They took possession of
the ear thworks and drove of f the
enemy and, in the process, captured a
number of entrenching tools with
which they were just throwing up a
[artillery] battery.
Some maintain that Maxwells desperate attack was only successful because it
was at that moment that they saw a
headless apparition astride a white charger cleaving of f the heads of British
artillerymen with a bloody saber. The
Patriots had no doubt that it was young

Miller, eking out revenge against those
who had separated his own skull from
the rest of him the month prior.
The story also goes that this headless
horseman actually saved the life of General Washington on the eve before the
battle was fought. It seems that several
British snipers had set up to kill the
American commander and would have
done so had Millers ghost not shown up
and ended the assassins plansand their
liveswith the blade of his sword.
Recent Sightings of the Horseman
owever, sightings of young
Miller did not end with the
defeat of the British and the
end of the Revolutionary War, though
thankfully, his more violent tendencies
seem to have faded with time.
Miller is said to still ride the roadways

and fields around Coochs Bridge battlefield and the Welch Tract Church.
While the area is rapidly becoming
developed, with subdivisions and a
major interstate (I-95) nearby, there are
still significant green areas that appear
much as they did in 1777. Thanks to
the generosity of Edward W. Cooch, a
descendant of Thomas Cooch Sr., who
sold to the state of Delaware some 200
acres of pristine land upon which the
battle was fought.
It is these rural areas that the headless
horseman prefers to haunt. For some
reason, the woods can be an intimidating
place at night. The air apparently thickens to the point of oppressiveness, and
an unnatural haze sometimes settles over
the land.
People who find themselves in those
woods report becoming disoriented,

the church has been the site of
many ghostly sightings, including
that of the headless horseman.

and being overcome by a wave of uncontrollable shivering. There is also the
night-dulled echoing of rapidly
approaching hooves as an unseen horse
gallops towards them. The horse appears
suddenly, as if materializing out of thin
air, with a headless figure mounted upon
it. Thankfully, the apparitions vanish as
swiftly as they appear, leaving onlookers
shaken but otherwise none-the-worse
for the experience.
Some accounts, however, have distinctly sinister undertones.
I was walking alone when suddenly
I heard the thunder of hooves behind
me, reports one witness, recounting
an experience from his youth nearly 50
years ago. I turned around but saw
nothing. Then I felt a presence brush
past me, like something large and fast
had just gone by. At the same time, I
felt a cold draft upon my neck that was
so intense it was almost painful.
Deborah is another person who can

36

vouch for Millers restlessness. As a student of the University of Delaware in the

1960s, she and a group of friends sometimes drove to Welch Tract Church to
tell ghost stories about the headless
horseman.
One late night in October, Deborah
and three friends drove off to spend a
few hours in the countr y, lounging
under the night sky for the last time
before winter set in. Well past midnight,
the students began considering returning to their dorm. Thats when Deborah
saw something.
I assumed that my eyes were playing
tricks on me, she remembers. As I
looked out across a field, I saw a glow,
white in color. At first it was small, but it
began expanding. I realized it wasnt
getting bigger, but was actually
approaching. In the center of the glow
was a man on a horse. I couldnt make
out his clothes, but he carried a sword in
an upraised arm as if ready to strike, and
he had no head.

The horse raced towards Deborah and

her friends, covering over a hundred
meters in mere seconds. Despite this, the
beast made no sound.
I felt an icy shiver, as if someone had
put snow down my back, and then the
ghost was gone, she explains.
Interestingly, none of her friends had
seen or experienced anything out of the
ordinary. Her friends listened patiently, if
not believingly, to her tale. Yet they could
not deny her ashen color or the uncontrollable shaking that seized her body.
Deborah had no illusions that this
headless horseman was a benign entity.
She has never returned to Welsh Track
Road and remains convinced she saw a
shadow from the Revolutionar y War
that night.
For Charlie Miller, it seems the War of
Independence still rages on. For some
reason, he remains trapped in this little
corner of Delaware, a place where both
the past and presentlegend and historylive side by side. z

Psychic and Medium
James Van Praagh
When James Van Praagh was eight
years old, he asked God to reveal
himself. What happened next
would set him on a spiritual
journey of self-discovery that
would lead him to become a
world-renowned psychic and

interface between this higher vibration

of energy and the physical world.
What do you see and feel when communicating with spirits?
any times, along with a
thought will come the personality of the individual. If
the person was emotional, there tends to
be an emotional feeling behind that
thought. I might also see an image of
their face in my minds eye. Or they may
come through by showing me a scar, a
birthmark, or their hairline something
that I can easily describe and that my
client can relate to.

What do spirits have to say to us?

ostly, they want to reassure us
that theyre not dead, so the
grieving process can be sped
up. When someone passes over, they first
attend a life review, during which they
relive every single moment of their life,
both the good and the bad. After this,
many spirits feel a sense of regret over
some of their actions or things that they
said during their lifetime. So they want
their loved ones to know that theyre
sorry for what they did, that they love
them, and that theyre still around to
support them.

M
What happened when you were eight
years old?
just asked God to reveal himself. I
was lying in bed, looking up at the
ceiling, and saw an open palm come
through the ceiling, along with beautiful, golden light. The light enveloped
me in a feeling of peace and understanding, and gave me a real sense of completedness.

I understand that you were raised a

staunch Irish-Catholic and almost
became a priest. What happened
to change your path?
s I was brought up Irish
Catholic, I always had the sense
that I had to do something for
people. So at the age of 14, I went into
the seminar y where I attended Mass
every day, as well as benediction, morning, and evening prayers. One day
around Easter, as the priests were clear-

meditate. While doing so, I got the
overwhelming sense that religion was
too limited and that God was beyond
Church walls. Thats where my sense of
spirituality began and my dedication to
the Catholic Church ended.

one person and say, as youre better
than ever ybody else, you should be
Pope. The Catholic Church made that
up. For me, the only religion I believe in
is the religion of love.

Do you think that organized religion

has a place in our society?
think that everybody has to travel
their own road to self-enlightenment and for some, those roads go
inward, towards religion. Organized
religion can be used as a tool for selfexploration, and in that way, I think its
beneficial. However, some religions
attempt to control its members through
judgment and fear. When religion
becomes fanaticism, then its not
healthy.
Its hard when human beings try to be
gods as people will always fail when they

What is the difference between a

psychic and a medium?
very medium is a psychic, but not
every psychic is a medium. Every
single person, I believe, is psychic
to one degree or another, or born with a
sense of intuition, for intuition is the
language of the soul. But some people
are born with a little more sensitivity
than others and are able to not only read
someone from a psychic perspective but
also read their energy. A medium is
someone who can do that, but they can
also attune themselves to a higher level
of energy or other dimensions, so as to

Can spirits also influence our lives?

h definitely. Because they now
exist outside of time, they can
see a bit into the future. Its like
being in a helicopter, where you can see
the road ahead. So they can tell you that
theres a detour coming up and in order
to avoid it, you should go another way.
The more attuned you are to your inner
self, the more attuned you will be to
receiving spiritual inspiration from
deceased family and friends.

What do you say to critics who

accuse you of doing parlor tricks?
ctually, I didnt know that people could fool others into believing that they are psychic when
they are not until I heard it from skeptics. Im sure someone can be trained to
do that but how can someone believe me

W W W. M Y S T E R I E S M A G A Z I N E . C O M

to be a charlatan when I can describe

things in such detail, such as the exact
location of someones birthmark?
Someone once said that perhaps all
Im doing is reading my clients minds,
but sometimes information comes
through that the client doesnt even
understand. When they return home and
ask their relatives, they find out that, for
instance, there was a baby who died
named Kathleen. As this information is
not even in their consciousness during
the reading, then there is no way I could
have read their mind to extract that
information.
When youre doing readings for a large
group, how do you know which message is for which person?
ometimes Im able to see a spirit
standing right behind or beside a
person and sometimes I cant.
There are times when Ill ask if theres a
lady here named Irene and that the spirits talking about dying from a heart
attack, and this description may be relevant to a number of people in the audience. Sometimes Im able to zero right
in, and other times Im not.

Youre a proponent of reincarnation.

Are there enough souls to keep up
with the exploding global population?
here are other forms of life,
other planets, and other solar
systemsthe earth is just one
place on which conscious beings exist.
You have to remember that your soul
exists in more than just its physical
body. So even though youre not aware
of the other dimensions, it doesnt
mean they dont exist.
In fact, humanity exists on several levels and in several dif ferent bodies.
Although were only aware of the physical body, theres also the spiritual body,
mental body, and emotional body, all of
which exists in other dimensions.
Lets say that theres a possibility in
those other dimensions that you can
travel from one place to another. You
might be in Peking, or Dallas, you
might be in Tokyo or Atlanta, all at the
same time and at the exact same

moment. To conceive that in our threedimensional world is difficult, but those

who exist in other dimensions can
because time and space are different
there than what we perceive them to be
here on earth.
How can we find out about
our own past lives?
ften, people can be brought
back through hypnotic or meditation regression, where they
can be regressed into a safe environment
from which they can observe what they
have experienced in a past life. This is
especially helpful when trying to understand ones phobias.
For instance, as a kid, I was always
afraid of the water. Later in life I had a
dream that I was a galley slave on an oar
boat, and I was chained to a whole
bunch of other guys in front of me and
behind me. There was a tidal wave, and
we couldnt get loose, and we drowned
as the boat went under. I believe that in
this dream I was re-experiencing one of
my past lives, which explains why I am
now so phobic about water.
In fact, theres some amazing documented healings that have taken place
when people have been regressed in a
previous lifetime to re-experience what
had brought on their phobia. By doing
so, one can rid oneself of the phobia for
good.

What do you see your role to be

in life?
believe that my job is to help people
to live in a mindful sort of way, for
the good things one does will come
back to you, and same with the bad. Its
like the ripples in a pond when you
throw a pebble into the waterthats
what energy is. z

According to Senate, ghosts sightings

are surprisingly commonplace. Accounts

are recorded among the first writings of
Egypt, Babylon, and China, are laced
throughout Greek and Roman history,
and even turn up in the Bible. While
their true nature remains unknown, they
are nevertheless universal to mankind.
However, true ghostly encounters seldom resemble their portrayals in popular
culture. The ghosts we see on television
and read about in novels actually reflect
a tradition that began with what Senate
calls an early 19th-centur y form of
tabloid reporting and dubbed The Penny
Dreadfuls by the more literate upperclasses. These publications claimed to
tell true-life ghost stories and sold for a
penny. The stories often focused on a
ghost returning to the earthly plane to
seek revenge for his or her untimely
death at the hands of a murderer. But
the fact is, most ghosts are not evil or
out to scare people.
There seem to be many reasons why a
ghost appears at a given moment. Some
are spirits who have unfinished business;
having died in the middle of their tasks,
they return to try and complete them.
Some theorize that ghosts simply do not
know they are dead while others believe
that ghosts might be the manifestation
of emotional traces left behind in the
environment, sort of like a footprint on
the fabric of time. Still others believe
that ghosts might be visions of a parallel
dimension.
Whatever their origin and nature, it
seems that anyone can see a ghost anywhere at any time, even in the mean
streets of Hollywood.

Later, whenever Durham returned to

Los Angeles, he would invite the Senates out for the evening. On one such
occasion, as the trio were having dinner
at the Polo Lounge in Beverly Hills,
Durham invited the Senates to go
ghost-hunting. They agreed, and after
dinner, Durham drove the couple to
the Westwood Cemetery, the final resting place for a number of celebrities,
including Marilyn Monroe. Durham
and the Senates happened to be there

on Monroes birthday and found her

grave decorated with flowers, lipstick
kiss marks, and notes.
When Durham asked Debbie if she
could communicate with Monroe, Debbie put her hands on the grave and started trembling. In a near trance, she
began to recite the story of Monroes
last day, relating how the ill-fated star
had been murdered by people she trusted. The tragic story also involved an illegitimate child and a scandal that would

Senates may have had contact is

his role as the trumpet-playing soldier
in the 1953 classic From Here To Eternity, Clift was learning to play the trumpet in his room at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel while he dried out from an
alcoholic binge. Clift would practice the
tr umpet into the wee hours of the
morning, much to the displeasure of
the other guests. Fifty years later, it is
said that the sound of Clifts trumpet is
still heard there.
To explore the rumor, Senate and his
wife conducted a sance in Clifts ninthfloor hotel room in an attempt to contact the late actor. They had borrowed a
trumpet from a friend and brought it
along to encourage the musical ghost to
appear.
The Senates did receive a rambling
story from a spirit about his concern for
an illegitimate daughter he had left
behind, but they were unable to ascertain whether the spirit was Clift as the
spirit refused to give his name. Given the
way the studio publicity departments
used to guard the private lives of the
stars who were in their care, there is no
way of verifying whether Clift himself
had an illegitimate daughter, so the spirits identity remains elusive.
After the sance, the Senates went to
sleep, leaving the trumpet standing on its
bell on the bedside table. They awoke the
next morning to find the trumpet across
the room on the floor. Nobody had
touched it, and there had been no earthquake to account for the instruments

Durham tape-recorded Debbies

investigators who were looking into the

nothing concrete enough to provide
absolute proof of this darker version of
the story of Monroes demise.

indulging in drugs or alcohol. He was

generally regarded as a real up-andcomer in the movie business, earning
rave reviews and comparisons to previous youthful stars, such as James Dean.
Yet he died of a drug overdose on Halloween Night, 1993, at the age of 23.
Sometime in the early months of
1994, Durham had invited the Senates to
have dinner at Gladstones, a pricey
seafood place on the beach near Los
Angeles, a restaurant that was frequented
by many stars. After treating the couple
to dinner, Durham again suggested that
they do a little ghost-hunting. As he
prodded Debbie for more psychic information, the reporter drove them to The
Viper Room, a popular club on Sunset
Boulevard in Hollywood.
Debbie was particularly animated
that night, talking and laughing and in
general, having a good time. But when
she got out of the car, her whole
demeanor changed and she nearly collapsed on the exact spot, they later
learned, where Phoenix had died a few
months previously. She then received a
communication from Phoenixs spirit,
in which he expressed regret over his
accidental death.
He told her that he shouldnt have
taken the pills, Senate said. He was
mad at himself for trying to fit in and
popping pills and taking that drink. He
thought it was stupid to die from an
overdose because of peer pressure.
A Curse on James Dean
ames Dean is another Hollywood
legend who has left more behind
than the proverbial good-looking
corpse. There are a lot of reports of
ghostly sightings linked to Dean, including tales of the car in which he died
being haunted. Yet oddly enough, Senate came to his story by way of the historic Queen Mary.
In 1994, Senate and Debbie were
conducting a sance onboard the longretired ship, which is now docked at a
pier in Long Beach, CA. He had succeeded in raising the voices of several
spirits when one particular entity burst
in, demanding that the captain of the

ship increase the speed at which they

were traveling.
Do you know that the ship isnt moving? Senate asked the spirit through
Debbie.
Its just a bit slow, thats all, came
the eerie reply.
The entity identified himself as British
actor Alan Mowbray, who said he had
appeared in the movies The King and I
and My Darling Clementine. After
answering a series of questions put to
him, the actors spirit went on a tirade
about a supposed warlock named Samson DeBrier.
As Mowbray told it, DeBrier was a
homosexual who had made amorous
advances on Dean, which the actor had
summarily rejected. DeBrier then put a
curse on Dean, who died in an infamous
auto accident two weeks later.
After the sance, Senate discovered
that there really was a man named Samson DeBrier who claimed to have been a
warlock and to have had special powers,
such as clairvoyance and the ability to
cast curses on his unfortunate enemies.
Interestingly enough, DeBrier supposedly also had the ability to cast good-luck
spells as well, and it was rumored that
some actors felt he had actually helped
their careers.
Senate also learned that DeBrier had
thrown large parties at his home on Barton Street in Hollywood, drawing such
luminaries as Jack Nicholson. Was

DeBrier merely a social butterfly who

claimed to have a sorcerers skill in order
to make himself seem more interesting
to celebrities or was he the real thing,
able to literally kill using the black arts?
Some laugh it off, Senate says, and others do not.
The Senates research involves the
notion that many departed movie idols
still walk the earth. Indeed, the Senates
focus on dead celebrities offers fans the
chance to continue watching their
favorite stars long after the paparazzi
have ended their chase. z

The Mysterious Origins of Americas Favorite Icon:

n the eyes of many people, Uncle Sam

is the personification of America. His
distinctive top hat, star-spangled coat,
and white goatee are instantly recognizable.
However, while Uncle Sams symbolic
meaning is readily apparent, the origins
of this famous icon are far more obscure.

As far back as the Revolutionary War,

Americans have searched for a fitting
symbol to embody their national pride.
Lady Liberty was one of the first, along
with a rapscallion known as Brother
Jonathan who was commonly depicted
in a top hat and striped trousers.
Unlike the staid Lady Liberty, Brother Jonathan was a fully realized character
who appeared in countless political cartoons, plays, and novels, and was the
dominant American icon until the War
of 1812.
During that conflict, a Troy, NY meat

packer named Samuel Wilson, affectionately referred to as Uncle Sam, won a

contract to supply beef to the American
troops. Wilson shipped beef to the
troops in barrels stamped with the initials U.S. Though the initials stood
for the United States, local troops joked
that they stood for Uncle Sam.
Even though the clean-shaven meat
packer looked nothing like our modernday icon, it did not take long for his
nickname to work its way into the common vernacular and became associated
with the federal government.

Brother Jonathan slowly vanished from

the editorial pages.
The last stage of Uncle Sams gestation came during World War I. Inspired
by a British recruiting campaign, James
Montgomery Flagg created one of the
most famous posters in American historya poster depicting Uncle Sam pointing toward the viewer and reciting the
immortal words, I want YOU for the
United States Army.
The campaign was an overnight sensation; recruitment skyrocketed and
morale on the home-front soared. Ironically, the stern face that most Americans
now associate with Uncle Sam actually
belonged to Flagg. In order to save on
the hassle and expense of hiring a model,
Flagg painted a self-portrait and then
decorated it in the icons traditional hat
and garb.
This celebrated image soon formed
the bedrock of all militar y recruiting
efforts from World War I to Korea.
Uncle Sam even had his own
comic book during the height
of World War II. During the
Vietnam era, however, Uncle
Sams overtly patriotic appeal
clashed with growing public
cynicism over the war, which
caused his image to be phased
out of many recruiting
efforts. For a brief time,
he even became a
popular symbol of
the anti-war movement.
But by the time of the Gulf War,
Uncle Sam had once again regained his
place as a stirring symbol of national
pride. Today, his stern face and outstretched finger can be seen once again
in military recruiting centers across the
country.
Though Uncle Sams appearance has
changed dramatically over the years, this
oddly dressed old man has come to personify the strength, idealism, and individuality that are the hallmarks of American democracy. Like the nation he
represents, Uncle Sam embodies all of
the righteous anger and determination
of the American people. z

The Sacred
Circles of

STU
JENKS
F

or many of us now at the beginning of the third millennium,

the sacred is everywhere, yet not necessarily in the traditional
places or spaces one might expect. Some of us experience the
power of the sacred in the sanctuary of a church while others experience sacred moments around a kitchen table, sharing joys, fears,
hopes, and sorrows with family and friends.
I find peace within the sacred space of a church, find beauty in
the petroglyphs of the ancient Anasazi. I feel a sense of the magical
when I create a flame spiral in the light of the full moon. I feel wonder
in the placing of a circle of Christmas lights in the remote high desert
near home. I feel humbled walking on the edge of Arizonas sandstone cliffs, and I feel pleasantly small photographing the night sky in
the Sonoran Desert.
But more than anything else, in these sacred spaces I find
something that is larger than me, greater than my self. A Universal
Spirit. A World Soul. A Something-That-Has-No-Name.
My hope is that in viewing these images, you may deepen your
own souls well, expand the edges of your own spirit, and find your
own universal yet personal experience with the sacred. z

knowledge, with topics such as
mysterious fossils, problems
with the prevailing "out of
Africa" hypothesis for our
human origins, telepathy, and
UFOs.
Exhaustively researched,
Human Devolution is a daunting but compelling attempt to
redefine what it is to be human.
Cremo asser ts that Dar winian
evolution is flawed. Drawing
from ancient Indian Vedic creation accounts, he argues that
matter coincides with a subtle
cognitive faculty (mind) and a
distinct conscious component
(spirit), that transcends both
matter and mind. In this sense,
he suggests that humans are
"devolved" entities who are
perceptually compromised by
our relatively low standing in a
cosmic hierarchy of beings who
are all at var ying stages of
enlightenment.
If you think his theory smacks
of creationism, you are right.
But unlike fundamentalists,
Cremo is honest in his presentation. To be sure, he takes
issue with mainstream evolutionar y thought, but given the
archaeological enigmas cited in
Human Devolutions encyclopedic prequel, what objective person can blame him? The reality
of Cremos Vedic alternative to
Dar winism is not so much a
conclusive explanation of evolu-

embracing

of
perceiving
our universe. To
that end,
Cremo
devotes a lengthy chapter
to world creation mythologies
where he unveils tantalizing similarities to his Vedic template.
However, Human Devolution
is not without its shortcomings.
While the book is informative
when taking the chapters individually, Cremo shirks the
admittedly daunting task of synthesizing them into a sensible
whole. The concluding chapterso brief as to be almost
flippantis essentially regurgitated Vedic creation myth that
will leave most readers wanting
to sink their intellectual teeth
into something more palpable.
While aspects of Vedic cosmology indeed echo repor ts of nonlocal consciousness, alien
encounters, and even Big Bang
theor y, subscribing to Cremos
metaphysical ontology requires
a leap of faith. Then again,
Cremo tells us as much.
Like a handful of other works
that attempt to explain it all
(such as Michael Talbots The
Holographic Universe), Human
Devolution is both an invitation
and a riddle. But the real issue
is Cremos potential impact on
the dominant materialist
paradigm. Will 21st-century science dare to accept Human
Devolutions call for a new epistemological perspective or will
Cremos work be forever consigned to the ever-growing
canon of "forbidden" texts?

Sight Unseen
Science, UFO Invisibility

udd Hopkins was a central figure in the surreal

landscape of alien abduction research when Hopkins
book Missing Time entered the
UFOlogical vocabular y and
1987s Intrudersan unner ving case study of multiple
abductionsplaced the phenomenon squarely on the cultural map. Sight Unseen, a book
co-written with Hopkins wife
Carol Rainey, takes a close look
at unusual abduction repor ts
and dares to ask difficult questions, such as: How can aliens
possibly abduct people from
public places without being
seen? Assuming that aliens are
here, are they necessarily
extraterrestrial? And is there
any scientific credibility to the
human-alien "hybridization" program documented by Hopkins
and colleague David Jacobs?
Hopkins tackles these enigmas with lucidity while Rainey
provides a r unning scientific
commentar y to Hopkins' case
files, methodically searching for
avenues of research that mirror
the aliens' alleged
abilities.
Read as a
whole, the ef fect
is that of listening

dialog between
two
infor med
friends
who
accept the reality
of UFOs and
alien inter vention but choose
to express their
reactions in dis-

tinct narrative formats. Raineys

insightful chapters on contemporary physics and biotechnology are well-researched and
enter taining while Hopkins'
selected abduction cases reveal
a mind surprisingly open to exotic possibilities.
Hopkins and Rainey claim
that cutting-edge science suppor ts rather than denigrates
abductee testimony. Both
authors also argue persuasively
for the reality of ET hybrids
based on current research in
transgenics. In other words, it is
possible for two radically different species to produce viable
offspring, given suitable technological wizardr y. Moreover, this
apparent wizardry may not be
as far ahead of us as we might
think. Sight Unseen sheds light
on other aspects of the archetypal abduction experience as
well, with meditations on everything from string theory to levitation and gynecology.
The picture that emerges is
amazingly rich and pregnant
with unsettling implications as
Hopkins and Rainey conclude
that alien abductions have produced a race of transgenics who
operate according to an
inscrutable alien agenda. This
paranoid scenario is not unlike
that of David Jacobs' The
Threat, but it is presented
much more skillfully and with an
appropriate measure of humility.
For Hopkins and
Rainey do not
claim to have
solved the abduction enigma, but
their witness testimony suggests
they might not be
far off the mark.

Hollywoods Ghosts
The Fabulous
Phantoms of Filmdom
BY RICHARD SENATE

he late great scholar of

religious myth, Joseph
Campbell, years ago made
an analogy between
the ancient gods
and movie stars.
The way audiences
gather in darkened
theaters to watch
the stories of our
gods unfold on a
big screenwhere
their images are magnified literally to the
size of giants-is not
much dif ferent from
how the ancients congregated in temples to worship
the gods of their time. We even
speak of certain actors as being
"immor tal," forever young on
celluloid.
It therefore becomes unsettling to contemplate the notion
that, when a movie star dies,
that he or she might walk the
Earth as restless spirits.
In Hollywoods Ghosts, ghosthunter Richard Senate has
done a marvelous job of collecting just these kinds of stories,
tales of the eerie twilight world
where the insatiable souls of
cer tain cinematic legends
return to the locales of their former lives, hungrily tr ying to fill
some dark, spiritual void.
There is, for example, the
stor y of how Clark Gable and
Carole Lombard ring for room
ser vice from their love nest in
the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel,
always at the same time of
night, and from an empty room.
The ghost of River Phoenix is
often seen wandering The Viper

Room, the Hollywood club

where he collapsed and died
from an accidental drug overdose. And then there is the
voice of Marilyn Monroe who
speaks from beyond the grave,
revealing how she was murdered by people she trusted in
order to ensure her silence.
Senate has actually visited most of
the places where
the events he
writes about took
place, and he
even provides the
street addresses
for tourists who

Hollywoods

kind of light but spooky reading
that both ghost buffs and movie

BY HILLEL HALKIN

n 1998, journalist Hillel

Halkin accompanied Rabbi Eliahu Avichail on his search
for the lost tribes of Israel.
Their expedition took them
from the Chiang villagers in
remote western China to
the Karen tribesmen of
Burma and the Mizo people of northern Mizoram,
India, as they searched
for people with Semitic
features whose legends
correspond to Biblical
stories. At first, Halkin
is skeptical of the

whole endeavor. But after his

trip with Avichail in 1998, his
interest is piqued.
In an illuminating chapter
entitled A Short History of the
Lost Tribes, Halkin describes
the development of the legend
of the lost tribes through the
centuries. Historically, after the
glor y days of David and
Solomon, Israel was divided
into the southern kingdom of
Judea, which were owned by the
tribes of Judah and Simon, and
the northern kingdom of Israel,
which were divided among the
other ten tribes. Then in the
eighth centur y BC, when the
Assyrians overran the northern
kingdom, its population was
sent into exile and now lives
across the mythical Sambatyonthe Sabbath Riverthat
flows for six days and then
cease to move on the seventh.
These are the ten lost tribes,
though the term would not be
coined until the Middle Ages.
But it is the prophet Jeremiahs verses about the Lord gathering scattered Israel as a
shepherd doth his flock that
eventually set off the Messianic
fever that still burns today as
the return of the tribes is
believed to be a necessary prerequisite for the coming (or second coming) of the Messiah.
Halkins return to Mizoram in
1999 takes up the second half
of the
book. At
the conclusion,
Halkin
pieces
together
linguistic
evidence
that the stories the Mizo
tell predate

the arrival of Christianity to the

area. Other documents, such as
a song about the Red Sea, provide fur ther clues. In the end,
he concludes that the Mizo people of India may indeed be the
descendants of one of the lost
tribes who disappeared from
history nearly 3,000 years ago.
Across the Sabbath River is a
fascinating account, both as
biblical scholarship and as a
pure quest.

Catholic crusaders killed over
100,000 Cathars in their zeal to

It would have been easy

encounters with seemingly unexplainable phenomena, but many more who
experience strange happenings never come
for ward because of fear of public ridicule.
Some encounters may involve supernatural
entities or ghosts; others contact with beings from another world. But what if the
explanation for many of these events were closer to home and far more sinister that
anyone had ever expected? What if the blame for these occurrences lay, not in outer
space or the spirit world, but on the shoulders of certain covert branches of the American government? Government Guinea Pig: When Uncle Sam Wants You is a rare and
disturbing glimpse into how the government may be using secret technology to profoundly affect and control the lives of its citizens.
It is a well-documented fact that the U.S. government has, on many occasions, conducted harmful research on its citizens without their knowledge or consent. Especially vulnerable to these abuses were prisoners, the impoverished, and members of ethnic minorities: in other words, those considered least credible and least able to voice
objections to these atrocities. From extensive testing in the 1940s and 1950s of the
effects of radiation on both soldiers and civilians to experiments in the 1960s involving LSD and other hallucinogens on students, military personnel, and others, to the
refusal of medical treatment to African-American men afflicted with syphilis from the
1930s to the 1970s in order to see the diseases natural progression in Tuskegee,
AL, the list of these abuses is long and ugly. And if the creators of Government
Guinea Pig are right, even more horrifying and sinister experiments are taking place
today. Using the stor y of one familys bizarre ordeal as a framework, they weave a
tale of how ordinary citizens are being used as subjects in experiments ranging from
mind control to directed energy weaponry.
Many of these experiences take the form of an event that seems similar to reports
of paranormal or UFO activity, from semi-transparent ghost-like objects that are actually projected holograms intended to confuse and terrify, to the emission of noxious
chemicals that, combined with lasers, create floating orbs and moving trails of light,
to infrared lights that only appear on film. Directed microwave energy can cause
symptoms virtually identical to a panic attack but leave no physical trace, including
heart palpitations, dizziness, disorientation, and hyper ventilation. In fact, the filmmakers imply that the millions of cases of panic attacks and agoraphobia experienced by people around the country may actually be triggered not by natural or psychosomatic causes but by these experiments.
Government Guinea Pig also discusses how these technologies have terrifying
implications in the private sector as well, involving mind and social control through
religious organizations, social groups, video games, and even so-called self-help
instructional tapes. For instance, they suggest that the audio frequency-based technology used to produce subliminal self-help messages that aid in quitting smoking,
losing weight, focus and concentration, and other activities could just as easily be
used to trigger certain responses in the brain from violent impulses (or their suppression) to manipulating emotions, implanting memories, or at its most extreme, death.
The DVDs production values, although low-budget, are clean and do nothing to
detract from the compelling story they have to tell. For conspiracy theory buffs, Government Guinea Pig is a must-see. For anyone who wonders aboutor has actually
experienced the peculiar phenomena associated with UFOs or the supernaturalthis
DVD will provide more than a few chilling moments.

writing of Cathar exper t Antonin Gadal,

Markale says, It is necessar y to attack each
text twice to follow the thread of his bizarre reasoning. Gadals disciples Otto Rahn and the
Nazis also receive special venom as Markale
exposes Rahns creation of fake Cathar carvings
at Nimes and calls Nazi efforts to co-opt the Holy
Grail legend as a triple betrayal of the peaceful
Celtic metaphysic of Jesus message of love
(and) of the Cathar vision of a world reconciled
with itself.
In place of
wishful thinking, Markale
references
texts ranging
from Chrtien
de Troyes 12thcentur y Perceval to the preC h r i s t i a n
Brittanys Saga
of Koadalan in
his quest to find
the real Cathars.
This is not to say
that Markale is a
stony-hear ted
skeptic. His descriptions of the wild Breton
moors and the inaccessible peaks of the Pyrenees are described with a bardic grandeur that is
befitting of his poetic roots.
Nor is Markale unwilling to entertain speculation and engage in a bit of theorizing. In one section, he links the Cathars to Persian Mazdaism;
in another, he discusses Cathar links to the
famous Jesus as father of the Merovingian
Dynasty legend. Yet he is careful to distinguish
between speculation and fact, and his debunking
is not spoiled with a rebunking.
After reading this book, readers will be able to
avoid the tourist literature which suggests that
the Cathars found refuge in the caves of Ussatles-Bains; they will know the difference between
the Welsh, German, and Provenal grail myths
and most impor tantly, readers will understand
why hundreds of condemned heretics could walk
singing to their deaths. Markales book strips
away the mythology and nonsense of the Cathar
legend to reveal their true courage and honor,
thus presenting a worthy monument for a people
who deserve no less.

The Manchurian
Candidate (2004)

or many, the original version of The Manchurian

Candidate, made in 1962,
is the ultimate conspiracy
movie. Inspired by the fear and
paranoia engendered by the
spread of Communism and the
excesses of McCarthyism in the
1950s, the film chillingly
reminded audiences that the
greatest threat to themselves
and their countr y might not be
external but far closer to home
than anyone would care to
acknowledge.
One may think that in our
more cynical times, where faith
in government and other institutions has ebbed, that a remake
of the classic film would have little to offer. Such a conclusion,
however, would be far from the
truth. For this finely acted reimagining of the original film still
manages to surprise.
Evoking the concerns of our

changing global landscape and
the increasingly prominent role

of the multinational corporation

in international affairsactual
politicians or events are never
mentioned The Manchurian Candidate, thus walking a filamentthin line between fiction and
reality, where the names and
the places have been changed,
but the faces remain the same.
Intriguingly, par tisanship in
the film is virtually nonexistent,
echoing the blurring party lines
that characterize American politics today (and perhaps also
making a statement about the

interchangeable nature of many

political candidates). The
media, too, plays its role, from
the 24-hour news networks and
their pundits to the vast
resources of the Internet, not
only as a source of news and
informationboth true and spuriousbut also as a tool that
manipulates as much as it
informs.
The film is graced by outstanding per formances by the
entire cast, especially Denzel
Washington as a Gulf War veteran trying to unravel the strange
circumstances that made the
career of fellow-soldier-turnedpolitician Raymond Shaw (Liev
Schrieber).
During the Gulf War, Shaw
had left their militar y unit with
suspiciously identical memories
of the event, and lingering nightmares of a far more sinister
kind. Schriebers per formance
as Shaw is surprisingly sympathetic as he struggles with his
conscience, battling the brainwashing that threatens his very
humanity. Mer yl Streeps portrayal of Shaws ruthless, calculating mother is supremely chilling, a brilliant, unnerving tour de
force. The outstanding script

and Jonathan Demmes direction add up to a film that holds

its audiences attention and
provides a banquets wor th of
food for thought.
The film is ultimately a tale
about the often horrendous
effects that the quest for power
wreaks on people. A modern
political fable with far-reaching
implications, The Manchurian
Candidate has full right to stand
beside the original film as a classic of American cinema.

I, Robot (2004)

n the credits of a movie, the

cause for alarm, unless one is
willing to accept the filmmakers
vast creative license. Almost
always, the filmmakers would
do better not even to mention
their source material and be
accused of plagiarism, or at
least poor imitation, than mislead the public by associating
the original source with the travesties they create. A rare exception is I, Robot, a satisfying
action film that, while only

MY S T E R I E S M AG A Z I N E ,

loosely based on Isaac Asimovs classic novel, still manages to examine many of the
philosophical issues raised by
the book.
While investigating the suspicious death of a scientist
renowned for his innovations in
robotics, a police officer (Will
Smith) uncovers evidence that
the seemingly per fect robots
that have filled so many niches
in society may be developing
outside of their original programming, becoming more like
humans but also becoming a
threat much greater than anyone could have conceived.
While including such details as
the three laws of robotics, a
moral guide to robot behavior
intended to create the per fect
rationale for robots to obey, protect, and ultimately ser ve the
needs of humans, none of the
concepts are laid on with a trowel; they are gradually and subtly
introduced as par t of the characters world, barely noticed
amidst all the action. And action
is where the film excels; spectacular chase scenes and digitized ef fects abound. In fact,
this fascinating futuristic world
with cars that drive themselves
at 200 miles an hour and
impossibly towering skyscrapers
is impeccably rendered.
The real triumph, however, is
in the extraordinary design and
execution of the robots themselves. Obviously an invaluable
par t of the plot, they are presented in myriad shapes and
forms, from boxy early robots to
the fluid, almost human models
that drive the plot. The characterization that comes through in
their animation, from charming,
even endearing, to disturbing,
drives home many of the films
(not to mention the books)
messages about our increasing

reliance on technology, the blurring lines between that technology and nature, and ultimately,
what makes us human, also
posing the question: does that
which makes us human necessarily make us better? Again,
unlike many heavy-handed
action films, I, Robot provides
few easy answers.
With its action-packed plot,
fine acting, and visually stunning ef fects, I, Robot does its
origins proud. Although not a
precise rendering of the original,
it enter tains while still raising
many of the books implications
in a novel and relevant way.

may trigger a typhoon in another. This phenomenon inspired

W W W. M Y S T E R I E S M A G A Z I N E . C O M

the film The Butterfly Ef fect,

which takes this somewhat
abstract concept to a much
more personal, and tragic, level.
Evan Treborn (Ashton Kutcher) has suffered strange, inexplicable memor y lapses since
childhood, all of them linked to
deeply traumatic events in his
own life as well as those of his
three childhood friends. By
keeping a journal of ever yday
events, he hopes to recapture
those lost memories. As he
grows older and apparently outgrows the lapses in memor y,
these diaries also ser ve as a
record of his past.
While in college, an
encounter with one of his former friends turns to tragedy as
the troubled young woman he
loves commits suicide. While
reflecting on their difficult past,
he finds that the memor y lapses he once experienced are
actually windows into his past
through which he can change
events for the better or so he
hopes. With each change, however, new problems erupt, dramatically altering all their

futures for the worse.

As each change in the past
reroutes the future, the line
between reality and fantasy
blurs. And Evan, the only one
aware of these previous realities, begins to doubt his right,
as well as his ability to change
all their lives, and even begins
to question his own sanity.
The Butterfly Ef fect is the
antithesis of most of the suspense and hor ror movies
released recently, relying not on
cheap thrills but on characterization and the sheer horror of
these childrens experiences to
provide the full devastating
impact. Well plotted, the film is
also beautifully acted, especially by the young actors who play
the childhood incarnations of
these four friends. Their remarkable portrayals of children reacting to traumas far beyond their
years provide chilling realism
and pathos.
Haunting, philosophical, and
deeply disturbing, The Butterfly
Effect will have lasting repercussions for its audience.

energy of Pacha Mama, the dominant deity and
Earth Mother of the Peruvians, culminating in a full
moon ritual at the ancient Tihaunacan goddess temple on the seldom visited Isle of the Moon on Lake
Titicaca.

A Glimpse into the Unknown

This photo was taken by civil engineer Germn

Pereira (bottom, right) on May 10, 2004 at 5:40
p.m., at the Parque Forestal in Santiago, Chile. The
image shows State Police on horseback with an
unusual creature crossing the road behind one
of the police (circled in red). The photo was
authenticated by Erick Martinez (bottom left) of
CIFAE Chile. Interestingly, strange lights were
also seen in the same general area at about the
same time that this photo was taken.
