SUMMARY
The National Council of La Raza (NCLR)the largest national Hispanic civil rights and
advocacy organization in the United Statesworks to improve opportunities for Hispanic
Americans. Through its network of nearly 300 affiliated community-based organizations, NCLR
reaches millions of Hispanics each year in 41 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of
Columbia. To achieve its mission, NCLR conducts applied research, policy analysis, and
advocacy, providing a Latino perspective in five key areasassets/investments, civil
rights/immigration, education, employment and economic status, and health. In addition, it
provides capacity-building assistance to its Affiliates who work at the state and local level to
advance opportunities for individuals and families.
Founded in 1968, NCLR is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan, tax-exempt organization
headquartered in Washington, DC, serving all Hispanic subgroups in all regions of the country. It
has state and regional offices in Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Phoenix, and San
Antonio.
BACKGROUND
NCLR is seeking a prospect researcher to lead research efforts as part of the Resource
Development team. The candidate will collaborate with the rest of the Resource Development
department to advance our individual donor and corporate giving program. The ideal candidate
will be able to consistently identify individuals and organizations with the philanthropic interest
and capacity to give $10,000 or more. The prospect researcher will report directly to the Vice
President of Resource Development.
RESPONSIBILITIES

Conduct research and collaborate with gift officers to identify and qualify prospective
individual, corporate, and foundation donors to support funding priorities; assess
organizational and individual linkages, wealth potential, and philanthropic motivation.
Use daily and weekly sources of information such as newspapers, magazines, and electronic
data sources for information on past donors, prospects, and to identify new prospects; assign

prospect ratings based on giving capacity as determined by extensive financial research


through online databases and resources.
Gather, organize, and evaluate data from numerous sources to prepare comprehensive profile
reports and brief event profiles on major donors and prospects.
Review annual reports, journals, and periodicals for new prospects as well as information
pertinent to current prospects, donors, trends, philanthropy, and education; improve and
contribute to donors files.
Manage the production and distribution of research reports needed for prospect identification,
cultivation, and solicitation; prioritize, determine research strategy, and complete research
requests.
Interpret biographical and financial information on individuals, corporations, and foundations
based on the Resource Development staffs fundraising strategies and objectives.
Schedule and conduct monthly prospect review meetings with development officers.
Maintain annual subscriptions to prospect research software.
Monitor prospect research trends.
Provide a broad range of database maintenance support, including updating contact
information, updating records and recording obituaries for deceased donors, recording donor
communication and contact report actions, and ensuring the general integrity of the data.
Stay abreast of developments in prospect research by attending training sessions and
communicating with other researchers by means of national and state professional
organizational memberships, conferences, and electronic mailing lists focusing on prospect
research and fundraising issues.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelors degree and a minimum of five years of experience in prospect research/prospect


management or related experience in a higher education or nonprofit setting
Proficiency in conceptualizing and developing proactive prospecting methodologies using
such tools as constituent list segmentation, data mining, and electronic and peer screening
Thorough knowledge of prospect management and research techniques
Strong project management skills and a collaborative nature
Excellent analytical skills and the ability to locate and interpret financial and biographical
information from a variety of sources
Understanding of wealth indicators and the ability to translate such information into prospect
ratings and gift estimates
Demonstrated ability to analyze and synthesize a high volume of information
Ability to oversee data integrity and to coordinate systems that improve efficiency
Ability to write concise research documents accurately with attention to detail
Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
Ability to foster a collaborative, customer-oriented working environment
Ability to work well under pressure and with deadlines
Proficient computer literacy and ability to learn applications quickly
Strong analytical skills, including expertise in the modeling and analysis of data

Advanced computer skills, particularly with Microsoft Office applications
