Partners HealthCare Names David Torchiana, MD Next President and CEO

(Boston, MA) The Partners HealthCare Board of Directors has named Dr. David Torchiana as
its next President and Chief Executive Officer, effective at a date to be determined in March
2015. Dr. Torchiana, who currently serves as the Chairman and CEO of the Massachusetts
General Physicians Organization (MGPO), will become the fifth CEO since Partners was
founded in 1994.

Dr. Torchiana will succeed Dr. Gary Gottlieb, who has served since January 2010 and
announced his intentions to step down last fall to become CEO of Partners In Health.
Dr. Torchiana possesses the instincts and the political savvy to be an outstanding leader for
Partners. He has an appreciation for each institution within the Partners HealthCare system and
all the remarkable people who dedicate themselves to the mission every day, said Edward
Lawrence, Chairman of the Partners HealthCare Board of Directors. During times of
uncertainty in the health care environment, Dr. Torchiana will be a leader who provides stability
and lends a voice of assurance that Partners HealthCare wants to help address the challenges and
be part of a solution.

I am looking forward to my new role at Partners HealthCare as its next President and CEO.
Partners institutions are vital members of the community and we want to be constructive
participants in the ongoing public conversation about the future of health care including quality,
cost and access. Patients will always be at the center of these discussions; improving patient care
is the reason our institutions exist, said Dr. Torchiana. I am grateful to Dr. Gary Gottlieb for
his support and for all the contributions he has made in the multiple leadership roles he has held,
dedicating himself to our mission and all the men and women of Partners HealthCare. I want to

thank the Partners Board of Directors for their confidence in giving me the opportunity to lead a
talented and multi-faceted group of people who are dedicated to our mission of delivering the
best care possible, research, teaching and service to community.

In his current role at the MGPO, Dr. Torchiana oversees the largest physician group practice in
New England, representing more than 2,000 physicians. Dr. Torchiana graduated from Yale
College in 1976 and Harvard Medical School in 1981. He completed residencies in general
surgery and cardiothoracic surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) before joining the
Department of Surgery in 1989. Dr. Torchiana became chief of cardiac surgery at MGH in 1998
and chief executive officer of the MGPO in 2003. He is also an associate professor of surgery at
Harvard Medical School.
Under Dr. Torchianas leadership, MGH launched the Care Management Program, one of six
demonstration projects nationwide. During the three-year demonstration, MGH developed new
strategies to improve the delivery of health care to its most vulnerable high risk patients, those
with multiple health conditions and chronic disease. The demonstration was so successful that it
was renewed by the federal government in 2009; today, it serves as the cornerstone of Partners
population health management initiative. To learn more about the Care Management Program

In making the announcement, Lawrence also commended Gottlieb for the tremendous progress
made at Partners over the past five years. Dr. Gottlieb is a distinguished leader who has served
Partners in many roles starting as the Chair of Partners Psychiatry and Mental Health, then as
President of North Shore Medical Center, and of course as President of Brigham and Womens
Hospital, said Lawrence. He has a deep commitment to our mission and the 64,000 men and
women of Partners HealthCare. He has supported the work of the President, the Governor, the
Mayor of Boston and countless business leaders, community activists and other health care
providers. His talents, his wisdom and compassion will be tremendous assets to Partners In
Health.
During Gottliebs tenure as CEO, he led the launch of several key strategic initiatives including
the implementation of a systematic approach to population health management, which improves
the patient experience while controlling costs; the implementation of Partners eCare, an

delivered at Partners hospitals; he has also fostered new innovations in Partners research
including whole genome sequencing and the Partners Biobank.
Todays announcement marks the end of a 4 month search process.

Lawrence said that Dr.

Torchiana was selected unanimously by the Partners Board of Directors to whom he will report.
