Mercury at 250C is flowing through a tube of 2cm diameter with Re = 10 4. Calculate the
heat transfer coefficient. The relation used is

(a)

Hydrodynamic boundary layer thickness at a distance of 50cm from the leading


edge of the plate.

Thickness of thermal boundary layer at a distance of 50cm from the leading


edge of the plate.

(c)

Local friction coefficient for x = 50cm

(d)

Average friction coefficient for x = 50cm.

(e)

Local convection heat transfer coefficient at x = 50cm.

(f)

Average heat transfer coefficient at x = 50cm.

Rate of heat transfer by convection for x = 50cm.

For air at 100 kPa and 300K, = 1.092 Kg/m3, = 17.6 x 10-6 m2/sec, Cp = 1.014 kJ/kg-K,
k = 0.0265W/m-K and Pr = 0.71.

Air at 20 0C flowing at 25m/sec passes over a flat plate, the surface of which is
maintained at 270 0C. Calculate the rate at which heat is transferred from both sides of the plate
per unit width over a distance of 0.25m the leading edge. Properties of air at 145 0C are:
= 2.8 x 10-5 m2/sec, k = 3.49 X 10-5 kW/m-K and Pr = 0.687.

Saturated air-free steam at 75 0C condenses on a 0.5m x 0.5m vertical plate maintained at


a uniform temperature of 45 0C. Calculate

(a) The average heat transfer coefficient over the entire length of the plate.
(b) The total rate of condensation.
(c) The thickness of condensate at the bottom of the plate.
The properties of condensate at 60 0C are:
= 4.71 x 10-4 kg/m-sec, k = 0.654 W/m-K, = 983.3 kg/m3 and hfg = 2257 kJ/kg

A vertical plate 5m high and 1.5m wide has one of its surfaces insulated. The other
surface is maintained at a uniform temperature of 400K is exposed to quiescent atmospheric air
at 300K. Calculate the Grashoff number and total rate of heat loss. The relation used is

The properties of condensate at 350 K are:

Water is boiled at atmospheric pressure in a circular pan of 0.3m diameter having a


copper bottom. The temperature of the copper plate is maintained at 110 0C. Estimate the heat
transferred to water in 10 minutes.
The properties of water at 100 0C are:
hfg = 2257 kJ/kg, f = 958.4 kg/m3, k= 0.668 W/m-K, Cp = 4.211 kJ/kg-K,
f = 277.5 x 10-6 N.sec/m2
The value of vapor liquid surface tension, = 58.9 x 10-3 N/m and Csf = 0.013.

Saturated steam at 1.46 bar and 110 0C condenses on a 25mm outer diameter vertical tube
which is 50cm long. The tube wall is maintained at 100 0C. Calculate the average heat transfer
coefficient and the rate of condensation.
The properties of condensate at 105 0C are:
= 954.7 Kg/m3, = 0.271 x 10-3 kg/m-sec, k = 0.68 W/m-K, hfg = 2243.7 kJ/kg.
