Introduction to MIKE2.

0
An open approach to Information Management
(www.openmethodology.org)
Presented to DAMA Australia, Sydney September 2011

Kevin Moysey

Business Drivers
The era of ubiquitous technology has lead to a new challenge - managing ubiquitous data.
We now find that every client we work with has a major data challenge:
Data quality is at the core of regulatory and customer pressures
System failures are largely data not technology driven and can be mitigated by data
rectification
Better business intelligence is at the core almost every major business recommendation
Data warehousing is now mainstream, not an afterthought, and is at the core of data
convergence strategies
A successful approach to IT transformation is data-dependent
Meaningful, cost-effective business and technology change processes can only
be achieved with a successful approach for information management.
MIKE2.0 calls this Information Development.
(DAMAs ) primary objective is to promote the understanding and practice
of managing information as key business assets.

Key Concepts

What is MIKE2.0?
MIKE stands for Method for an Integrated Knowledge Environment
MIKE2.0 is a comprehensive approach to Enterprise Information Management
MIKE2.0 brings together important concepts around Open Source and Web 2.0
What is SAFE?
SAFE stands for Strategic Architecture for the Federated Enterprise
SAFE is the architecture framework for the MIKE2.0 Methodology
What is Information Development?
Information Development is the key conceptual construct for MIKE2.0
Think about developing information just as you think about developing applications

MIKE2.0 (www.openmethodology.org)

Information Layer

In MIKE2.0, Information is as important as business functions/processes and integration. While obvious

when laid out in this way, it is amazing how few projects are engineered around the information. This is
despite increasing evidence that 100% of projects with poor information engineering practices are deemed
to be a failure.

Case Study DEEWR Information Management Strategy

DEEWR was created on the 3rd December 2007

as a result of a Machinery of Government (MoG)
change after the November 2007 federal election

Previous work with DEEWR included ICT

Strategy, and comparison of DEST/DEWR
merger with similar private sector merger
costs and benefits.
This provided some background
understanding of the organisation
and current IM situation.

Information Management Strategy work started early in 2010

25

MIKE2.0 (www.openmethodology.org)

Case Study DEEWR Information Management Strategy

DEEWR is large, broad and complex

Over $43 billion total funds administered for FY11/12

Over 6,000 staff in Australia and overseas
About 20 main locations across all states/territories
Covering child care, schools, universities, employers, apprenticeships, indigenous
employment, job seekers, unemployment, administration of 10 relevant Acts etc
In one sense or another has entire population and all businesses as clients
Responsible for supporting evidence-based policy decision-making and subject to FOI
(so information management is critical)

Case Study DEEWR Information Management Strategy

A key IM challenge
Current reporting effective where there is direct
ownership or a direct funding relationship with the
information source and reporting is directly along
lines of business

27

MIKE2.0 (www.openmethodology.org)

New departmental information driver is reporting

that correlates information across multiple lines
of business to link programs driven from one
line of business to metrics measured within
another line of business
