LIMA The Spencerville man accused of killing a 17-monthold boy and facing the death penalty pleaded not guilty by reason
of insanity Wednesday to an aggravated murder charge in Allen
County Common Pleas Court.
Due to his inability to provide counsel for himself, Judge
David Cheney appointed Bill Kluge and Bob Grzybowski to
represent Clayton.
The judge explained the charges to Clayton in the Jan. 15 slaying of Xavier Wurth, which said Clayton purposely killed a child
under the age of 13 and was the principal offender or was the
principal offender who acted with prior calculation and design.
Both are needed to seek the death penalty.
Following a 911 call, officers to 229 Wurster St. in Spencerville.
The initial investigation led officers to believe the toddlers death
may not have been from natural causes and the death would be

LIMA A Delphos man will avoid the
death penalty after agreeing to a plea deal
Thursday morning.
Patrick D. Coller, 43, pleaded guilty to
killing his 42-year-old wife, Gerri L. Coller,
on Aug. 14. He faces up to life in prison.
Prosecutors originally sought the death
penalty for Coller.

According to Delphos Police reports,

Patrick Coller went to the Delphos Police
Department the evening of Aug. 14 and
allegedly confessed to killing his wife in a
corn field earlier in the day. Officers took him
into custody and then he went with officers to
locate her body. He was reportedly very calm
throughout his contact with officers.
Sentencing has been set for 8:15 a.m.
March 26.

VAN WERT Lincolnview Local Schools has a lot to be

proud of, and it can add sweeping the awards at the 2015 Van
Wert County Spelling Bee to that list. Winner Kirsten Stemen
is a seventh grader at Lincolnview Junior High, runner-up
Una VanWynsberghe is a fifth grade student at Lincolnview
Elementary, and third place went to Lincolnview eighth grader
Kylee Mongold.
Stemen correctly spelled the word bambino in the eighth
round to be named winner of the spelling bee held Thursday
evening at the Marsh Foundation Auditorium.

gums and tooth loss. One solution is regular dental
cleanings.
A pets bad breath or chronic halitosis may be
a sign of a serious health risk, with the potential to
damage not only Fido or Fluffys teeth and gums,
but also their internal organs.
In recognition of National Pet Dental Health
Month, veterinarians address the significance of
proactive oral care for all pets all year round but
especially during the month of February. Delphos
Animal Hospitals Dr. Bonnie Jones, D.V.M., said
National Pet Dental Health Month is an annual
event when veterinarians may do promotions or
offer discounts to increase awareness for pet dental
care.
We want to emphasize that pet dental care is
most effective when done on a daily basis and that
dental cleanings should be done all year round, not
just in February, Jones said. Many pet owners
think that giving their pets tartar-control food and
treats alone is adequate. We find that doing multiple
things, including daily toothbrushing or wiping,
providing hard rubber chew toys and dental treats, or
using water additives, when all done together is most
helpful. In the end, the pet owner needs to discover
what is easiest to do for their pets dental care, while
being certain to do it daily. Anything that provides
mild abrasive action to the teeth will be helpful but
it needs to be done regularly; once weekly or once
monthly will not be effective.
She explained with dogs, daily toothbrushing is
ideal using fingerbrushes, dental wipes or a small
toothbrush.
With cats, its a little trickier since they have
fewer, smaller teeth and its harder to get brushes

into their mouths, Jones explained. Cat dental care
is best accomplished using flavored dental wipes or
gauze. There are flavored toothpastes for dogs and
cats as well. For some pets, especially cats, using
gauze dipped in chicken broth, tuna, or clam juice
works really well, as the flavoring provides a positive experience for the pet.
It all comes down to what works best for the pet
owner and pet.
Before a client leaves the veterinary hospital
with their pet after a professional dental cleaning, we
educate them on the importance of and techniques
for providing pet dental care to prolong the benefits
of the cleaning, Jones said.
Dr. Marisa Tong, associate veterinarian at Delphos
Animal Hospital, added that the sooner pet owners
get started cleaning their pets teeth, the better.
Never use human toothpaste, as it can make
pets sick, Tong said. Even though the mint flavored/smelling pet toothpastes make a pets breath
smell better, poultry flavored is often preferred by
the pet.
The ASPCA and Dr. Jones recommend taking
these steps to make brushing easier for both the pet
and pet owner:
A veterinary exam before beginning any preventive pet dental health program will be helpful
as your veterinarian can make suggestions for a
dental cleaning or what will work best for your pet.
If your pet already has dental disease, brushing can
be painful, setting the dental health program up
for failure.

Patrol investigating
serious injury crash
INFORMATION SUBMITTED
LIBERTY TWP The Van Wert Post
of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is
investigating a serious injury crash in
Van Wert County. As a result of the crash,
two people were transported to the Van
Wert Hospital, and one was transported
to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne via
Lifeflight.
The crash occurred at 8:52 p.m. on
Wednesday on US 127 near mile post 2 in
Liberty Township, Van Wert County.
A vehicle driven by Storm McGinnis, 23,
of Van Wert was southbound on U.S. 127
when he failed to maintain reasonable control, drove off the right side of the roadway,
struck a guardrail, returned to the roadway
and proceeded over the center yellow line
and struck a pickup truck. McGinniss vehicle came to final rest on U.S. 127. The truck
was traveling northbound on US 127 and

driven by Scott Danner, 44, of Payne. It spun
off the east side of the roadway coming to
rest in the field.
McGinnis was transported to Fort
Wayne Parkview Hospital for treatment
via Lifeflight, where he remains in critical
condition. Scott Danner and his passenger,
Annette Danner, 42, were both transported to
Van Wert County Hospital, where they were
both treated and released.
Alcohol is not a factor in the crash and
the investigation is ongoing. Airbags were
deployed in both vehicles.
Assisting at the scene were Van Wert
County Sheriffs Office, Ohio City EMS
and volunteer fire personnel and Superior
Towing.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol urges
all drivers to use caution on all ice- and
snow-covered roadways.

Winners of the Landeck School spelling bee include Ryan Rahrig, second grade; Mike
Hemker, first grade; Eddie Sellers, fourth grade; Kim Kiracoffe, third grade; Beth Brenneman,
sixth grade; Nikki Geise, fifth grade; Ryan Wurst, sixth grade; Lynn Bonifas, fifth grade; and
Jim Rode, fifth grade. Fifth- and sixth-grade finalists will compete Feb. 16 at Jefferson Middle
School.
The third quarter again befriended the Jefferson Wildcats girls basketball team as they
caught fire and bolted to a 19-point lead before coasting to a 53-43 victory over the Antwerp
Archers Monday night at Jefferson Senior High School. Laura Schmelzer led all scorers with
18 points. Cheryl Kortokrax contributed 13 and Missy Clark 11. Gretchen Clevenger added six.
Theresa Graham, daughter of Tom and Betty Graham of Spencerville, won the 1990 Allen
County Spelling Bee held Saturday at Elida Middle School. Graham received a $100 savings
bond and advances to April 5 regional competition at Sinclair Community College, Dayton.
Runner-up was Justen Briggs, a sixth-grade student at Elida Middle School.
50 Years Ago 1965
Three members of Jefferson High School were inducted into the National Honor Society
Thursday in a program conducted before an assembly of the high school. The new members
are Linda Fletcher, Jane Koch and Jane Powell. Conducting the ceremonies was Larry Baker,
president of the society, with Pam Shaw, Linda Truesdale, Sally OBryant and Alida Raabe, all
present members of the society, taking part in the ceremony.
Greg DeCamp, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl DeCamp, Columbus Grove, received his Eagle
Scout award at a covered dish dinner held this past week in the social room of St. Anthonys
Catholic Church. Greg is the eighth member of Explorer Post 227 to receive the Eagle award.
Others include Kent Volkmer, John Welty, John Culp, Bill Snider, Bill Barrere, Phil Hawkey
and David Welty.
Members of the I D Bridge Club attended a noon luncheon Thursday at The Steak House
and later played bridge at the home of Mrs. Joseph Busch on North Canal Street. First prize
in the bridge games went to Mrs. William Deffenbaugh, second to Mrs. Fred Reinemeyer and
traveling to Mrs. Edwin Williams.

A regular meeting of Delphos Aerie of Eagles was held Monday night at which time final
arrangements were made for participation in the district initiation which will be held Sunday at
Bryan. Delphos Aerie will have a number of candidates in the class. The Van Wert degree team
and ritualistic officers will be in charge of the work at the district initiation.
Esther Louise Miller, West Fourth Street, received the Daughters of Reformation of the
Lutheran Church and two guests, Ruth and Esther Walterick, into her home Monday evening.
Devotionals were given by Juanita Pollock; news reports, Mae Rauschart; an article, New
Guinea Commissary, Lucile Freund; and lesson, Bring them In, the Unchurched Millions,
Mrs. J. G. E. Mittermaier.
Monday afternoon, the Delphos Jefferson Wildcat Kittens opened their 1940 junior high
basketball season against the Elida junior high team with a 32-12 victory in the Jefferson gymnasium. The game marked the opening of a series of junior high basketball games scheduled
to prepare the Wildcat Kittens for a defense of one of the best junior high records in the local
district.

Members of Midwest Electric recently donated $12,800

to eight west-central Ohio charities and community projects through the cooperatives Community Connection
Fund.
Since the program began in 1998, the Midwest Electric
Community Connection Fund has provided $851,485 to 678

Ignoring religion can be dangerous
For more than a century, Western diplomats

and scholars were sure of one thing: that religions role in world affairs would decline as
humanity evolved toward a future rooted in
logic and science.
Those who didnt accept this vision were
considered naive, irrational or perhaps even
dangerous.
The problem? There is little evidence that
this theory is true. In fact, it has become increasingly obvious that journalists and diplomats must pay more attention to religious
traditions and practices if they want to understand many of the conflicts shaping and shaking our world, argued historian John Wolffe of
the Open University in England.
Precisely because mainstream Western society is predominantly secular, a positive effort
needs to be made to enable those who do not
have a religious faith to have a better understanding, both of the significant (religious)
minorities in the West ... and of a continuing,
and arguably growing, influence of religion in
much of the rest of the world, he said. Wolffe
made these remarks during the recent Getting Religion conference in Westminster, England, led by the Open University and Lapido
Media.
To be blunt, he said, confusion about the
role that religion plays in the real world is dangerous. But how will religious believers and
unbelievers learn to understand each other if

While it may sometimes be hard to resist the temptation to go for the eye-catching
headline that stereotypes a particular religious
group, there needs to be a greater readiness to
look beneath the surface and to seek to educate readers, listeners and viewers, said Wolffe
in an address later posted online. All of this
matters, because a negative dynamic in which
religious people are feared because they are
not understood, and themselves feel threatened and embattled by an uncomprehending
society, is a climate in which insecurity and
consequent extremist ideas and actions can
fester.
In a conference report, Religion, Security
and Global Uncertainties, Wolffe and other
scholars stressed that national security experts
must learn to walk a fine line between blaming
violence on religion and swinging to the op-
posite extreme -- refusing to investigate how

radicalized forms of religion can create security threats.
For example, a task force created by Englands prime minister focused primarily on
a clear polarity between what it regards as a
peaceful, traditional Islam and what it calls
Islamist extremism. It needs to be recognized
that there are many shades of gray in between,
he said. Unless that is fully appreciated, there
is a risk of finding extremists in every mosque,
alienating majority Muslim opinion and making it much harder to identify the relatively
small minority who are an actual risk to national security.
The risks are real, and its crucial for journalists and diplomats to react when religious
and secular forces cause stable, diverse communities to splinter and veer into violence.
Rapid economic changes, a political regimes
collapse, natural disasters or outside military
threats can cause such explosions. So can the
rise of a charismatic religious leader or an invasion -- real or via media -- by activists from
foreign cultures.
Religion can mix with nationalism, with
oppressive government policies, with ancient
tribal conflicts or attempts by a majority group
to crush a hated minority.
Progress is possible. Wolffe and others applied lessons learned during generations of
strife in Northern Ireland to current conflicts
inside the complex world of Islam. The bottom line: Even secular officials, diplomats and
journalists need to recognize that mainstream
religious leaders must be involved in strategies
to promote peace.
Religion can make a shattering difference
in peoples lives, but indifference to religion
can make a shattering difference as well, said
Jenny Taylor of Lapido Media, when interviewed after the conference. Far too many
people simply have not done their homework.
They dont know the ground on which they are
standing when they look at the world around
them.
As for journalists and government officials,
she said, when facing a crisis involving religion, they most of all fear making a mistake
that can end their careers, so they are afraid to
act. ... But they also have to be concerned about
the mistakes they can make by not acting, by
not covering important religion-news stories.
You see, if you dont understand religion, then
you are going to make mistakes either way -and they are going to be profound mistakes.

An open letter to new parents

As a pediatrician, I am fortunate to be a
part of the lives of new babies and new parents on a regular basis. The first few weeks
are a whirlwind of emotion. Everyone has
advice and they are never sure who to listen
to and who is just adding to their worries.
Without trying to add to the anxiety, I would
like to share a letter to let them know how
momentous this moment is.
Dear New Parent,
Whether you have become a parent for the
first time by birth or adoption, whether you
are receiving a newborn or an older child,
your life has just changed in immeasurable
ways. At this moment, you are no longer the
most important person in your life. You, however, have become the most important person
in their life. The things you do and the decisions you make will no longer be decided by
how it affects you. It will instead be decided
by how it affects your child.
You have become their protector and their
provider. You will teach them right from
wrong. You will try to teach them that treating
others with kindness is always the best way
for them to live their life, and you will be
there for them when they find out that others
are not always as kind as they should be.
You will have to learn when you can step
in and fix their problems, and when you have
to step back and let them learn to handle
things for themselves. As a parent, you have
in some ways become superhuman. You can
now feel their feelings, you have the power
to heal their pain with a single kiss, and you
can teach them to fly just by believing in their
dreams. You will find that you feel their aches
and pains, and worry more about their slights
than they do.
Your child will have a place in your heart
that no other person has ever touched, or
ever will. You have just bought a ticket to the
scariest roller coaster ride of your life. You
will laugh, you will sometimes feel nauseous
and wonder why you ever got on this crazy

exhilaration that are unexplainable. You may
have moments of sadness or fear that will take
every ounce of your strength to pull yourself
and your child through.
Being a parent is not a job for wimps. If I
could give new parents any gift in the world, I
would say that patience is the most important
gift you could get. They will break things that
you love and you will have to remember that
the only truly irreplaceable thing you have in
your house is your child.
They wont sleep when you want them
to sleep, or eat what you want them to eat.
When you are running late, they will suddenly
decide that they dont like the way shoes feel
and they will never wear shoes again.
Patience.
When they make mistakes, and they will,
you will learn to forgive. Because when you
love somebody as much as you love your
child it is impossible not to forgive them. In
that forgiveness, they will learn what it means
to have unconditional love. It is a love that
is only shared between a parent and a child.
This little person you hold in your hands has
the power to change the world. They have just
changed your world.
Congratulations on your journey. Enjoy
every moment.

Lady Jays nearly pull off upset

DELPHOS There are
no moral victories in sports
but the St. Johns girls basketball effort Thursday night
against Marion Local was
pretty darn close.
The Jays led the Flyers
(who just happen to be ranked
#1 in the latest girls basketball state poll in Division IV)
late in the fourth quarter until
costly turnovers were the difference in the 43-39 Midwest
Athletic Conference loss in
front of a Robert A. Arnzen
Gymnasium crowd.
The Blue Jays defense
had trouble containing 6-0
Emily Mescher in the opening quarter as she turned a
pair of offensive rebounds
into buckets from the inside.
The St. Johns offense was
hot from the outside as Lexie
Hays and Rebekah Fischer
drilled 3-pointers for an 8-6
lead. Mescher tied the game
8-8 on an assist by Macey
Griesdorn as the first quarter
ended.
Mescher is one of the best
back-to-the-basket post players in the state, St. Johns
coach Dan J. Grothouse said.
We knew that we couldnt
contain here 1-on-1, so we
made some adjustments to
slow her down.
After Allie Thobe scored
for Marion to open the second stanza, St. Johns took
the lead back on baskets
inside by Madilynn Schulte
and Sydney Fischbach.

of our effort tonight against a
top-ranked team and it proves
that we have a lot of potential
going into the tournament.
At the same time, Im disappointed because we had a
great opportunity to pull off
the upset but couldnt quite
pull it off.

T-Birds shoot their way past Lincolnview

Catholic is a team with plenty of weapons at its disposal.
As the Lady Lancers found out on
Thursday night, when you take away
one scorer, there are two others ready
to fill the void. The Lady Thunderbirds
put three in double figures and claimed
a non-conference win at Lincolnview,
62-52, in a game that was much closer
than the final score would indicate.
The Lancers were coming off a rough
offensive game that saw them held to 24
points in a loss at St. Johns on Tuesday.
Early in this one, it looked like the
offensive struggles had stuck around.
Trailing 18-9 early in the second quarter,
however, Lincolnview put on a charge,
scoring 14 of the next 19 points to know
the game at 23-23 just before halftime.
During the Lancer run, senior guard
Julia Thatcher knocked down a pair of
3-pointers, along with a layup, while
Alana Williams and Ashton Bowersock
each added a bucket.
Julia just made a couple of outside
shots. We didnt change anything we
were doing, she just got a couple of
open looks that rimmed up and rimmed
in, Lancer head coach Dan Williamson
explained. We just made a couple of
shots and that got us going.
LCCs elite sophomore Madison
Stolly ended the first half with a pair
of free throws, part of her 7-for-8 effort
from the line in the opening half, to put
the T-birds up 25-23 at the break. Stolly,
who set a school record on Monday with
39 points, had 14 at the intermission on
Thursday, largely thanks to her ability
to get into the lane and either score or

draw a foul.
While Stolly got loose early, the
Lancers (11-8) did a good job bottling up
the perimeter game of LCC, limiting the
T-birds to just 35 percent in the first half
and only 2-for-7 from beyond the arc.
Bowersock re-tied the game with a
score from the post to start the third and
the Lancers led at 28-25 when
Thatcher drilled another trey. A
team with as many shooters as
the T-birds have is bound to start
making some shots, however,
and T-bird senior Kayla Verhoff
and junior Natalie Snider each got hot in
the third quarter as LCC not only recaptured the momentum, threatened to run
away with things.
After a Stolly hoop put the T-birds
(13-7) back in front, Sniders trey put
LCC up 34-30 with 4:14 to play in
the period. Thats when Verhoff took
over. A three from the wing, a pair
of made free throws and another trey.
Hannah McCleery knocked in back-toback buckets to keep the Lancers close,
but Verhoff connected again from long
range as the third quarter came to a
close. Heading to the fourth, LCC had
built an 11-point lead.
As they did in the first half, however,
the Lancers fought back.
Bowersock opened the period by getting behind the defense and drawing a
foul. After Bowersock dropped in a pair
of free throws, McCleery came up with
a sprawling steal-and-save that wound
up in the hands of Bowersock at the
other end for the fast break layup. When
Stephanie Longwell converted a pair of
free throws, the Lancers had cut the lead
to five at 49-44.
With this group, its what weve
come to expect: theyre going to dig in,

make some plays, and get some stops,
Williamson added of the Lancer effort
in coming from behind. Finally tonight
we made some shots. This is a very resilient group. They play hard.
Unfortunately for the home squad,
Snider quieted the crowd with another
trey and Stolly grabbed her own miss and
scored on a put-back to help
rebuild the T-bird advantage.
Despite baskets by Bowersock,
Katlyn Wendel and Thatcher,
LCC went 5-for-6 from the line
down the stretch to pull away
for the win.
Stolly paced the victors with 21
points, but it was the second-half contributions of Verhoff, who finished with 16
points including 11 in the third quarter,
and Snider, who added 13, that made the
difference.
We knew that was going to be a
challenge for us, Williamson said of the
T-bird perimeter shooting. They dont
have the post presence that other teams
have, theyre just really good from the
perimeter. In the third and fourth quarters, Verhoff and Snider really caught
fire and carried them.
Lincolnview shot 53 percent (19for-36) from the field for the game
and also had three double-digit scorers. Bowersock paced the Lancer attack
with 18 while grabbing seven rebounds.
Thatcher added 16 while McCleery
dropped in 10.

to Chevys Le Mans lineups

DETROIT Ryan Briscoe and Jordan Taylor, both coming off headline-making drives in the Rolex 24 at Daytona,
have been added to Corvettes 24 Hours of Le Mans lineup.
Briscoe will be reunited with Antonio Garcia and Jan
Magnussen in the No. 63 Chevrolet Corvette C7.R for the
endurance race held June 13-14 in Le Mans, France. The trio
just won the GT Le Mans class last month in the Rolex 24 at
Daytona.
Winning at Daytona was a big accomplishment for the
entire team, Briscoe said Thursday. Weve shown how well
the Corvette C7.R and team can perform over the course of
a 24-hour race. Thats a big confidence booster heading into
such a prestigious event.
Taylor, who has raced at Le Mans the last three years in
the No. 73 Corvette, was attempting to close out the Rolex for
Wayne Taylor Racing. But he was denied a chance to chal-
lenge Scott Dixon and the Chip Ganassi Racing team for the
win when, under a late caution, it was realized he was over the
time he was allowed to be in the car.
He had to stop for a driver change that relegated WTR to
a third-place finish. IMSA last week stripped the team of the
finish when it was ruled Taylor had surpassed his allowed time
in the car.
For Le Mans, Chevrolet has moved Taylor to the No. 64
with Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner.
Taylor has twice before been teamed with Milner, and
credited Gavin with helping him establish a relationship with
Chevrolet.
I know both guys really well, he said. We may have
been in different cars in the past, but at Corvette Racing its
one team and one goal to win.
Both Corvettes will compete at Le Mans in the GTE Pro
class, which is the equivalent of the GTLM class in the United
SportsCar Championship.

PAULDING The Lady Wildcats from Delphos Jefferson

suffered in the shooting department Thursay night, hitting just
29 percent of their attempts, but solid defense in the second
half allowed the visitors to prevail over Paulding 43-37 in
Northwest Conference basketball action.
The 6-point win improves the Cats record to 6-12 (2-4
NWC) while the Lady Panthers continue to look for their first
win of 2014-15, falling to 0-17 (0-6).
After playing to an 8-8 standoff through eight minutes of
play, the Lady Wildcats used a strong second quarter to distance themselves from winless Paulding 24-15 at intermission.
The second period opened with Brooke Culp hitting from
behind the arc to put her team in front 11-8, a lead they would
not relinquish. Paulding eased back into it to trail 18-15 but
Delphos Jefferson closed out the stanza with two free throws
from Devyn Carder surrounded by two buckets from Culp.

going to have to play a perfect
game to knock Crestview out
of the ranks of the unbeaten
when the two girls hardwood
units met up Thursday night
at Spencerville High
School.
That was even with
an injury-free team.
Minus the injured
Schylar Miller (early in
the season) and Caitlin
Probst (in the last few
weeks) and it became
well nigh impossible.
The Lady Knights
threw a first-period shutout
on their way to a
51-17
Northwest
Conference victory.
Creestview senior
Lindsey Motycka
needed 11 points
at the start of the
game to reach 1,000
points for her career
but endured some foul
trouble and fouled out with
five points (5 rebounds).
Crestview (18-0, 6-0
NWC) had one defensive
possession of 2-3 zone to start
the game and Spencerville
showed extreme patience
against it. After that, it was
all man-to-man and the Lady
Bearcats (6-11, 1-5) missed
all seven field-goal tries (6-of32 for the game, 1-of-10 from
deep, for 18.8%) in the canto
and turned it over four times
(17 for the game). On the
other end, Crestview working against Spencervilles 2-3
zone broke the scoreless
tie at 3:11 on two singles by
Paige Motycka (10 counters)
and got the first basket at
2:25 on a 15-footer from the
right wing by Kennis Mercer.
The visitors were 3-of-7 from
the field (15-of-32 for the
game, 6-of-15 downtown,
for 46.8%) and when Claire
Zaleski buried a triple-andharm from the right wing
at 46.7 ticks, their lead was
10-0.
Spencervilles
Katie
Merriman (6 points) finally
got the Black Attack on the
board on a tough layin at 6:42
of the second canto and they
did warm up, shooting 4-of-8.
However, Crestview matched
those fielders with four of
its own (11 shots) and added
6-of-7 at the line (15-of-17
total for 88.2%). Thus,
when L. Motycka put
back a miss with 1.1
ticks on the clock, the
guests led 26-8.
Spencerville needed
to find something to
make a serious run to
start the third. Didnt
happen. They were
1-of-10 from the field
and though Crestview didnt
light the world on fire
(4-of-9), partly due
to six turnovers (12
for the night), they
still managed to add
to the lead. When P.
Motycka took a halfcourt steal in for a
layin at 46 ticks, that
lead was 38-13.
The Knights biggest lead
of the night came in the fourth
period the final margin of
34.
We knew the kind of
opponent we had in Crestview
and how well wed really
have to play; we had very
little margin of error. They
are so well-balanced, so wellc0ached and they really know
how to play the game of basketball, Spencerville head
man Greg Ekis said. Our
game plan was to come out
and slow the game down; we
felt that was our only chance.
However, their defense made
things tough for us and yet,
we also got some good looks.
They just didnt fall; thats
part of the game of basketball.
Overall, Crestview secured
28 boards (7 offensive) as
Emily Bauer (5 blocks) led
with eight; and added 12
fouls.

Jays, Jeffcats hope to start

peaking as tourney draw nears

With one week left until the boys
basketball tournament draws, St. Johns
and Jefferson are seeking to make a run
toward a high seed and favorable draw
in the sectional round.
First off, they have some tough sledding to get there.
The Blue Jays (11-4, 3-2 MAC) are
in the midst of a gauntlet of the three
top Midwest Athletic Conference powers: third-ranked (Division
III) St. Henry (43-30 loss
last Friday), at ninth-ranked
(Division IV) Marion Local
tonight and Versailles (9th in
D-III) next week.
The Wildcats (9-7, 1-3
NWC) host a deep and balanced Paulding quintet this
evening at The Stage.
ST. JOHNS/MARION
LOCAL
The Jays know what their focal point
must be to handle a tall and talented
Flyer (11-3) unit inside The Hangar of
Marion Local High School.
They have 6-10 Luke Knapke
(heading to Toledo) and 6-8 Ryan Bruns.
They present two great challenges, Jays
coach Aaron Elwer said. One, you just
dont get to practice against that kind of
length and athleticism because we dont
have it on our team; not many do. They
either block or alter so many shots in
the paint and beyond it; were trying to
do some different drills to get our kids
cognizant of what they will face in this
game but practice and a game are different things. We beat them last year by 19
one of the best efforts we had all year
but that was at our place and were on
the road this time. They are basically a
man-to-man half-court team with a little
bit of 2-3 zone and some extended 1-2-2
zone but not much.
Offensively, theose two guys have
to be your focus on defense because
they are such tough matchups inside.
Their strength is the paint and we must
defend the paint as well as we can and
basically live with them shooting more
open perimeter shots than normal. So
far from what weve gathered, they are
not the best outside shooting team but
theyve been good enough so far.
The keys for us starts at the defensive end. We need to get clean stops:
not give them easy shots inside but
force contested shots outside and get
the rebound all five guys and not
give them extra attempts. Then, we need
to push the tempo to try and get some
easier looks in transition. If they get
back, we have to be extremely patient
on offense and force their defense to
move side to side but even passing will
be a chore.
The Blue Jays trot out an all-senior starting five: Andy Grothouse (17.7
points, 4.2 boards per game), 3-point
sharpshooter Alex Odenweller (11.8
counters, 2.7 boards - 32-of-86 3-pointers for 37.21%), 6-6 Tyler Conley (9.8
markers, 5.5 rebounds), Evan Hays
(6.1 markers, 5.1 assists, 1.9 steals)
and Austin Heiing (3.4 counters, 2.9
rebounds). Off the bench are junior
Aaron Reindel (.3 markers) and sophomores in 6-5 Tim Kreeger (3.5, 4.5 caroms), Robbie Saine (1.5 counters) and
Jaret Jackson (.20) for a crew averaging
53.3 points and giving up 44.7.
The Jays held a 20-17 lead at
the half before the second-half
doldrums cost them a win vs. the
Redskins, yet bounced back with
a 67-56 triumph over Spencerville
Saturday.
We felt really good about ur
first-half effort against them; we
had a lot of confidence going into
the locker room. We come out of
the halftime and get two shots blocked
inside and then have an 8-footer roll
in and out, while getting two turnovers
at the other end, Elwer added. If
we could have had a 9- or 10-point
lead, who knows what might have happened. It didnt happen, though, and
Ryan Mikesell at 6-7 was just a tough
matchup for us 45 feet from the basket.
Once they got the lead, they run a spread
offense and he executes it so well.
Our defense has been a strength
almost all season. We have defended so
well, our focus has been more on the
offensive end than at any time in my
years here. In our four losses, we have
had that killer extended drought that we
cant overcome. We have been working
hard to shorten them or not have them
happen at all but part of it is the way
teams are guarding us, too.
Tipoff tonight is 6:30 p.m. for the
junior varsity.
The Jays are at Lincolnview for a 6
p.m. start Saturday.
JEFFERSON/ARLINGTON
The Wildcats seem to have found
a winning formula a 3-game streak
after falling below the .500 mark but
head man Marc Smith knows that the
Panthers bring a different facet of the
game with them.
They have been a deep, talented and balanced team the last
several seasons. For example,
they will play 10 guys in the
first half alone and not have
much of a drop-off; you generally dont see that on a regular
basis, he acknowledged. They
have three really good players:
Alex Arrellano is a physical inside/out
guy who can score in the post and yet
hit the 3; Gonzales, an inconsistent yet
extremely athletic player; and Corbin
Edwards, who is a very explosive play-
er, especially in transition. The thing is,

the other guys they put out there are all
capable of playing very well on both
ends; that makes them tough to prepare
for and defend. They have weapons at
all five spots and that is a challenge for
any defense.
Defensively, I fully expect a lot of
box-and-1 because we have seen them in
it already this year against another team.
Theyll go straight man and throw in a
1-2-2 and 2-3 matchup zone that gives
you a lot to prepare for. What they do
in those zones is make you hesitant and
start to think instead of just play.
What we have basically done this
week in practice is told the kids to just
play; when we call a play or a set, just
run it no matter what defense Paulding
is playing. We dont want them to be
overthinking out there because then,
thats when you make mistakes and turn
the ball over, which is what teams like
Paulding thrive on.
The Wildcats seem to have settled
on a base 7-man rotation: a starting five
of juniors Trey Smith 27.6 points, 8.0
boards, 1.9 assisst per game), Dalton
Hicks (6.0 markers, 6.1 boards, 2.4
assists) and Josh Teman (1.7 markers, 3.8 rebounds) and sophomores Jace
Stockwell (14.6 counters, 4.3 dimes, 3.3
caroms) and Drew Reiss (6.3 points, 4.1
caroms, 3.4 assists), with junior Grant
Wallace (2.5 markers) and freshman
Brenen Auer (.8) off the bench. Senior
Seth Wollenhaupt (.5) and junior Ryan
Goergens (.3) have played limited minutes for a group averaging 60.2 markers
and ceding 52.3.
The
Wildcats
squeezed
by
Lincolnview 54-49 and Arlington 45-39
the next night in two down-to-the-end
road battles last weekend.
The kids have adjusted to what
were doing, especially defensively.
Weve mixed up our defenses and it
seems to suit this group of players,
Coach Smith added. As a coach, I
always prefer to play man-to-man, use
full-court pressure and turn turnovers
into transition but you also have to
adjust your game plan to what you have
as a team. Weve got experience but at
the same time, we still have an awful lot
of youth and everything that means.
Weve decided to focus more on just
playing the game, being the
aggressor and putting forth
great effort. We feel at this
stage of our development
that will put us in better position to make plays at the end,
whether its a big defensive
stop or rebound, executing
an offensive set or whatever.
Were putting ourselves in positions to
be at that spot; we just have to make
plays. The last three games, its worked
for us as far as victories.

No limits: Penn State celebrates signing day Franklin-style

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. The cheerleaders arrived at
Penn States football offices just as the sun was starting to
peek from behind Mount Nittany.
Blue and white balloons were everywhere and pop music
pumped loudly into a room that was filling quickly with Penn
State supporters, administrators and coaches from all sports.
James Franklin sat at a table with his head buried in a stack
of papers, looking like the only guy at the party trying to study
but this was undeniably his show. The Penn State coach has
turned signing day into an event in Happy Valley and this one
was particularly significant.
For the first time since the program was slammed by the
NCAA after the Jerry Sandusky scandal, the Nittany Lions
are not burdened by sanctions. Their scholarships have been
restored, along with their vacated wins. And they made a victorious return to the postseason.
The school also has a new president and a new athletic
director. Both were in attendance Wednesday morning to
welcome the latest Nittany Lions, a group that comes to State
College knowing from the moment they step on campus there
are no limits.
With our staff this is how its been since Day 1, Franklin
told The Associated Press. But I think every day and every
time something changes from a positive perspective about this
university, with the community and with the football program
specifically, it helps. There are just a lot of things falling into
place for us right now. Every time another domino falls, its
restoring hope. Hope is a powerful thing.
A half hour before national letters of intent could start
arriving, Penn State coaches were wondering which player
would be the first to make his verbal commitment official.
One suggested Brandon Polk, an undersized receiver from
Virginia. Another said Manny Bowen, a linebacker from New
Jersey, and one of the most-heralded prospects in class that
would end up ranked in the top 15 in the country by all the
major recruiting services.
Franklin said it would be perfect if the first signed NLI
came from Jarvis Miller, a defensive back from Connecticut,
who was also the first player in the class to commit.
The winner was Irvin Charles, a wide receiver from New
Jersey, who became the first pick in the Penn State 2015
signing day draft. Video coordinator Jevin Stone played the
role of commissioner, either announcing the picks or handing
off to one of the dignitaries in the room. President Eric Barron
and athletic director Sandy Barbour each took a turn.

Tiger Woods withdraws because of tightness in lower back

SAN DIEGO New season,
same old story with Tiger Woods.
Only its no longer a happy tale.
For the third time in his last eight
PGA Tour events, Woods got into
a cart in the middle of his round
and was driven to the parking lot
because of back pain. Most troubling about Thursday in the Farmers
Insurance Open was he spoke only
a week ago of feeling great physically, and this was only his second
event of the year.
He blamed this one on the weather, which caused his glutes to shut
off.
Woods walked off the course
after 11 holes on the North Course
at Torrey Pines, citing tightness
in his lower back from standing
around for more than an hour in the
cool Pacific air during a fog delay in
the morning. He never looked comfortable, and Billy Horschel noticed
it right away. Woods was reaching

for his back at the turn. Horschel
tried to help by picking up the tee
for Woods on their 10th hole and
the ball from the cup when Woods
made birdie.
I was ready to go, Woods said.
I had a good warmup session the
first time around. Then we stood out
here and I got cold, and everything
started deactivating again. And its
frustrating that I just cant stay
activated. Thats just kind of the
way it is.
Woods now has gone 12 straight
PGA Tour events without a top 10,
dating to his runner-up finish in The
Barclays in 2013 when back pain
dropped him to his knees. This was
his first round since a career-high
82 last week in the Phoenix Open to
tie for last with a club pro and miss
the cut by 12 shots.
Its tough to see a guy I look up
to, a guy I consider a friend, to have
issues with spasms, Horschel said.
Its tough to see him go, but he was

in quite a bit of pain.
Nicholas Thompson had an
8-under 64 on the North Course
and had a one-shot lead over
Michael Thompson when play was
suspended by darkness. Brooks
Koepka, coming off his victory in
the Phoenix Open, had a 66 on
the North. The best score on the
tougher South Course belonged to
Jhonnatan Vegas, who shot 67.
Dustin Johnson, playing for the
first time since his six-month leave
for personal challenges, holed out
for eagle on No. 4 on the South
Course as his lone highlight. He had
five bogeys and was 2 over with one
hole remaining.
But this day was all about Woods,
which used to be typical at Torrey
Pines because he has won the tournament seven times. Thursday was
different. Several players came out
of the scoring area and said, What
happened to Tiger?
Its just my glutes are shutting

off, Woods said, sound more like
a physical therapist than a 14-time
major champion. Then they dont
activate and then, hence, it goes into
my lower back. So I tried to activate
my glutes as best I could in between,
but they never stayed activated.
It has become a troubling trend
for Woods. In his last six tournaments since back surgery last
March, he has missed the cut three
times, withdrawn twice and finished
69th in the British Open, his lowest
72-hole finish in a major.
Its just tough not seeing him
have his best, whether its with
his game or with his health, said
Rickie Fowler, who played in the
group with him.
Woods was 2-over par through
11 holes and in a tie for 130th when
he withdrew.
He will fall to his worst world ranking since before he won his first PGA
Tour event as a 20-year-old in 1996,
and he most likely will not qualify for

a World Golf Championship for only
the second time in his career. Woods
is not expected to play again until
the Honda Classic in three weeks.
Doral is the following week. He did
not indicate earlier in the week that
he would add tournaments to his
schedule ahead of the Masters, which
is April 9-12.
The front nine at Torrey Pines
was more of the same kind of golf
he showed in the Phoenix Open
last week, when he missed the cut
by 12 shots with a short game that
was shocking. On his first hole, the
par-4 10th, Woods short-sided himself right of the green and he bladed
his chip some 35 feet beyond the
hole for a bogey.
He was in trouble again on the
next hole, facing the same chip,
and this time struck it perfectly. He
chipped in to save par.

star running back Adrian Peterson to get back
on the field will come in a federal courtroom.
Attorneys for the NFL Players Association
were scheduled to argue today for the
Minnesota Vikings standouts reinstatement

its divisive personal conduct policy. The punishment, stemming from the child abuse case
involving Peterson and one of his young sons,
has widened the divide between the NFL and
the NFLPA over player discipline.
The effort on behalf of Peterson, who is
suspended through at least April 15, is the
legal equivalent of fourth-and-really-long.
When Petersons appeal was denied Dec.
12 by an arbitrator appointed by the league,
the union sued. Its petition to overturn the
decision contends that the suspension, guided
by Commissioner Roger Goodells enhanced
punishments for players involved with domestic violence after the Ray Rice case, strayed
from the collective bargaining agreement.
The NFLPA also argued the decision is unfair
and arbitrator Harold Henderson was biased

Defensively, we were very good; I dont really have a

complaint. We had much better effort than we did Tuesday
night and we talked about that, Crestview mentor Greg
Rickard noted. Spencerville can score points, so to hold them
to 17 at their place, Im proud of the effort the girls gave. We
shot decently, especially from three. The only issue is turnovers and basically, they came in the third period when we
either tried to force things into the post, didnt step to the ball
or something we dont normally do. Usually, we have single
digits in turnovers against zones.

Delphos Jefferson took a double-digit lead on an opening basket in the
third quarter by Shelby Koeing 26-15.
Paulding chipped away at the Cats
advantage and managed to get to within
four when Brooke Combs drained a
3-pointer with just under three minutes
remaining. Again, Delphos Jefferson
closed out the third quarter much like
the second, scoring the final six points:
a bucket from Sarah Miller and Heather
Pohlman and two free throws from
Culp.
On the night, Culp led the Wildcat
scoring with 17, including a perfect
6-for-6 from the line. Culp was the only
double-figure scorer for the winners
but the Wildcats had eight other players

She (Culp) has done an excellent
job for us all year. She is our leader and
she does so many things on the court.
We really rely on her a lot. She along
with our two other seniors, Heather
(Pohlman) and Shelby (Koenig), have
million salary in 2015 and carry a salary cap

hit of $15.4 million thats by far the biggest of
any running back in the league.
With plenty of other needs to address on
the roster, allocating that much money to that
position is almost unfathomable for a team
that hasnt hesitated to cut a veteran player
despite popularity and production.
The free agency and trading period begins
March 10, just 11 days before Petersons
30th birthday. Thats also more than a month
before the earliest he could be reinstated by
Goodell, unless Doty were to beat him to it.
The Vikings drafted Jerick McKinnon in
the third round last season, and general manager Rick Spielman said last month he sees
the rookie running back class this year being
as deep as its been in a while. Even if they
werent interested in signing a free agent to
replace Peterson, they could also try to deal
him for draft picks.
Simply releasing Peterson would only
count $2.4 million in dead money against
the teams salary cap for 2015 and nothing
thereafter, but letting him leave without any
compensation would be a big blow to the
organization.
Hes going to play at a very high level
when he comes back, Spielman said recently. I dont know if theres a team in the NFL
that wouldnt want Adrian Peterson on their
football team.

Heading into the final frame, the
Wildcats held a 10-point lead at 38-28.
Paulding held Jefferson without a basket
in the quarter and managed to outscore
the Wildcats 9-5 but it wasnt enough to
get Paulding their first win.
In the final quarter, we used several young kids and we slowed it down.
I thought we did a good job with our
dribble penetration. It allowed us to
get fouled and get to the line, said
Hoffman.
At the foul line, the Wildcats collected on 16-of-25 attempts while the
Panthers were 8-for-11. The second-half
defense by Delphos Jefferson forced the
Panthers into 26 miscues.
Paulding has a couple of strong kids
and I thought we did a decent job defensively on the inside but I was a little
disappointed in our first-half effort. We
gave them too many open looks for the
3-point shot, Hoffman said.
Paulding was led by the 13 points
from Combs, who collected four buckets
from long range and free throw. Susanne

When you only shoot 29 percent,
then you have to play solid defense in
order to get a win. We will continue to

Hackers see rewarding targets

in health care companies

Health care is a treasure
trove for criminals looking
to steal reams of personal
information, as the hacking
of a database maintained by
the second-largest U.S. health
insurer proves.
The latest breach at health
insurer Anthem Inc. follows
a year in which more than 10
million people were affected
by health care data breaches including hacking or
accidents that exposed personal information, such as
lost laptops according
to a government database
that tracks incidents affect-

numbers, compiled by the
Department of Health and
Human Services, show that
last year was the worst for
health care hacking since
2011, when more than 11
million people were affected.
Health care hacking is
becoming more of a focus as
retailers and other businesses
have clamped down on security after massive breaches
at companies like Target and
Home Depot. That has made
it more difficult in some cases
for cyber thieves to infiltrate
their systems. As a result,
theyve turned their attention
toward health care.
Most importantly, acclimate your dog

or cat to toothbrushing at an early age by
massaging the pets lips with your fingers in a
circular motion for 30 to 60 seconds once or
twice a day for a few weeks. Then move on to
the teeth and gums.
When your pet seems comfortable with
mouth handling, put a little flavored pet toothpaste or a paste of baking soda and water on
the lips to get it accustomed to the taste.
Next, introduce a toothbrush designed
especially for pets it should be smaller than
a human toothbrush and have soft bristles.
Fingerbrushes or pet dental wipes that you can
apply over your finger are also available for
cats and smaller mouths.
Finally, apply the toothpaste to the teeth
using a gentle abrasive action.
Tong said it is ideal to flip the lip and
perform dental assessments every six months
and dental cleanings annually.
Dogs and cats that have annual cleanings
live longer and carry less bacteria in their
mouths, Tong explained. Its recommended
to anesthetize cats and dogs for ultrasonic
dental cleanings. Some pets, especially smaller pets and those on soft food diets may need
ultrasonic cleanings more often.
During a dental cleaning, the patient is
given an injectable anesthetic then intubated
(an endotracheal tube is placed inside the
wind pipe of an anesthetized patient). The
endotracheal tube is then connected to a
breathing circuit used to administer oxygen
and inhalant anesthetics.The patient is monitored for heart rate and oxygen levels in
the blood via equipment and veterinary staff
members throughout the procedure.
Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT)
Angela Unverferth added ultrasonic scaling
uses a rapidly vibrating metal probe and cooling
water mist to remove plaque and tartar on the
surface of the pets teeth and below the gumline.
A routine cleaning takes about 30-45
minutes, Unverferth said. I start with the
backside of the teeth and work forward.
Experts say health care

companies can provide many
entry points into their systems for crooks to steal data.
And once criminals get that
information, they can pull off
far more extensive and lucrative schemes.
If
someone
steals
your credit card and home
address, they might be able
to buy something, but you
can usually get that locked
down quickly, said Tony
Anscombe, a security expert
with the cybersecurity firm
AVG Technologies. With
medical records and a social
security number, its not so
simple.
After the cleaning, the patients teeth are

polished and a dental sealant can be applied to
slow the expected recurrence of plaque.
There are once-weekly dental sealant
(Oravet) applications available for pet owners to
use at home as well, Tong explained. We also
make the best use of time when a pet is under
anesthesia by doing toenail trims, ear cleanings
and anal gland expressions as courtesy services
included with our dental cleanings.
Tong said the patient is slowly awakened
once the last phase of the polishing begins so
as not to keep it under anesthesia any longer
than necessary.
Once the patient is off inhalation anesthetics, they begin breathing room air and must
start swallowing before we extubate (remove)
the endotracheal tube, Tong detailed. The
patient will begin breathing more deeply as
they are becoming more awake.
The patient is then transferred into a recovery
area where he/she is further monitored by staff.
Jones also wants pet owners to be aware of
the dangers of allowing Fido or Fluffy to play
with, gnaw on or ingest certain dangerous
toys or foodstuffs.
Dogs sustain many tooth fractures from
chewing on items sold as toys. Nylon toys,
pigs ears, deer antlers and thick soup or knuckle bones can readily cause damage to pet dental
enamel, even though it is the hardest surface in
the body, Jones explained. Soup bones may
get lodged around a pets lower jaw behind the
fangs. Weve had to saw these bones off from
around the jaw with the pet under anesthesia.
Also, after chewing on and breaking chew
bones, pets can get pieces stuck between their
teeth and/or lodged in the roof of their mouths.
They also have a likelihood of becoming
obstructions in the intestinal tract or causing gastrointestinal inflammation and/or constipation,
Jones said.

word after VanWynsberghe
flubbed the word manicure.
Stemen then spelled rucksack and bambino to be
named winner of the event.
Stemen, who was also a participant in last years county
spelling bee, attributed her success to intense preparation. I
prepared by hours of studying,
she said. I was constantly asking friends to quiz me on words
and I would go online and look
at lists and lists of words.
After Stemen was named
spelling bee champion, a spelloff was held to determine which
of the three competitors eliminated in the fourth round would
be named second runner-up.
Mongold was the only participant to correctly spell her word
in this round and was awarded
third place in the competition.
All competing spellers were
presented with a certificate of participation and the top three spellers
were presented with plaques.
Stemen now advances to
the regional spelling bee, to
be held at the IPFW campus
in Ft. Wayne on March 7. In
the event that Stemen cannot
attend, VanWynsbyrghe has
been named the alternate.
