FALL 2009 SEMESTER HIGHLIGHTS


|BARRETT URBAN EXPERIENCE|

New Barrett students were invited to experience a one-day introduction Phoenix’s urban core.
Students visited the Central Arizona Services Shelter, the Phoenix Urban Research Lab, the City
Manager’s Office, and took a Light Rail tour with Urban Planners. Students learned from city
officials and community leaders about what makes urban environments and Phoenix unique.
|BARRETT TASTE OF COPPER SQUARE|
Students and their families enjoyed free food from various hot spots like Carly’s
Bistro, Conspire, and ZPizza on a shuttle tour of Downtown Phoenix.

|BARRETT NIGHT AT THE BALL GAME|

Just blocks away from the ballpark, Barrett Downtown students spent a
night enjoying America’s favorite pastime—baseball. Students walked
down to Chase Field to watch the Arizona Diamondbacks PLAY BALL!
|BARRETT NIGHT AT THE SYMPHONY|

The Phoenix Symphony put on a fantastic show for our Barrett students, highlighting pieces
from Beethoven’s 9th.
|BARRETT TEAM RACES FOR THE CURE|
Every year, the Susan G. Komen Foundation organizes Race for the Cure in downtown
Phoenix to help raise funds and generate awareness about breast cancer. This year,
Downtown Barrett students & staff teamed up to participate and help support the

Barrett students from the West and Downtown campuses traveled to Tempe via METRO
light rail for dinner, then returned to the Downtown campus to enjoy Sweet Republic ice
cream, break-dance painters, and other fun festivities in Civic Space Park.

|DR. LATTIE COOR TALKS ABOUT THE ARIZONA WE WANT|


Partnering with Valley Leadership, Barrett Downtown welcomed former Arizona State
University president and founder of the Center for the Future of Arizona, Dr. Lattie
Coor as our Fall 2009 guest lecturer. Students came to hear Coor speak about his
most recent research endeavors, which include The Arizona We Want report.

|BARRETT DINNER WITH CENTENNIAL LECTURER JOEL MEYEROWITZ|


An acclaimed photographer and Barrett’s 2009 Centennial Lecturer,
Joel Meyerowitz had a multitude of fascinating stories to share with Barrett stu-
dents during his visit downtown. Among his many accomplishments, Meyerowitz
was the only photographer to gain access to Ground Zero after 9—11.

The Phoenix Art Museum opened its doors to Barrett students this fall, starting with a
private reception, and followed by a tour through the Phoenix Art Museum’s latest exhibits.

|BLAST’D SPONSORS BLACK & WHITE MOCKTAIL MIXER|


In celebration of a successful Fall semester, the Barrett Leadership and Service Team
Downtown organized a Black & White Mocktail Mixer for the Downtown campus. The
event also served as a food drive, requiring a donation of two nonperishable food items
for admission. Dressed in their best black and white attire, students enjoyed mocktails,
food, fun and a little dancing!

ASU Downtown Phoenix Book Club


Created in 2008 by a Barrett Journalism student, this club offers students, faculty and staff the chance to
share their love of reading. Meets the last Monday of every month at 5 p.m. at Fair Trade Café in Civic

BHCANS: Barrett Honors College Association of Nontraditional Students


BHCANS provides a forum for peer advice, support and encouragement, a shared resource base, and an
opportunity for the nontraditional student (ages 25+, or returning after a 2-year gap in enrollment) to de-
velop a vibrant, interconnected community of their peers at Barrett. For more information, contact

Barrett Downtown Dean’s Advisory Council


The Council is a committee of Barrett students who serve as representatives of their peers to offer valuable
feedback about the Barrett Downtown program to Associate Dean of Barrett Downtown, Dr. Laura Peck.

Barrett Downtown Honors Devils


Honors Devils serve as ambassadors of the Barrett Downtown program, assisting with Barrett recruitment
activities on campus. Honors Devils help give presentations and provide tours to prospective students,
meet individually with prospective students for lunch and/or dinner, and assist with preparation of recruit-
