Problem 1:
A switch-mode power supply is to be designed with the following specifications:
Vd = 48 V 10 %
Vo = 5 V (regulated)
fs = 100 kHz
Pload is 15-50 W
A forward converter operating in continuous-conduction mode with demagnetizing winding (N3
= N1) is chosen. Assume all components to be ideal expect for the presence of transformer
magnetization inductance.
a) Calculate N2 / N1 if this turns ratio is desired to be as small as possible.
b) Calculate minimum value of the filter inductance.
c) What is the maximum duty ratio that the converter can operate without saturation?

Problem 2:
In the following switching converter, let switching frequency be 50 kHz, consider all
components to be ideal and assume the following parameters,
Vd = 24 V
N1/ N2 = 3.0
Lm = 500 H
R=5
Vo = 5 V
a. Determine the required duty ratio D.
b. Compute the capacitor value C to ensure peak-peak output voltage ripple to be less than

1% of the output voltage.

c. What is the maximum voltage seen by switch S and diode D?
d. Plot the diode D current waveform. Compute the power loss in the diode. Assume
forward drop for diode to be 1 V for loss calculation.

Problem 3:
The average output voltage of the forward converter is Vo = 24V at a resistive load of R = 5
ohms. The ON stage voltage drop of transistor is 1.2V and diode is 0.7V, the duty ratio is 40%
and the switching frequency is 5 KHz. The DC input voltage is 12 V, the turns ratio of the
transformer is Ns/Np = 1/6. Find
a) The average input current
b) The average peak and RMS current of the transistor
c) Voltage across the transistor
d) The output inductor for maintaining the p-p ripple current is 4% of its average value and

the ripple content in output voltage is 3%.

Neglect the losses in the transformer.

Problem 4:
A flyback converter has the following parameters. Assume that all components are ideal.

Determine
a) the required duty ratio D;
b) the average, maximum, and minimum values for the current in Lm and
c) The output voltage ripple.
Problem 5:
Design a flyback converter to produce an output voltage of 36 V from a 3.3V source. The output
current is 0.1 A. Design for an output ripple voltage of 2 percent. Include ESR when choosing a
capacitor. Assume for this problem that the ESR (rc) is related to the capacitor value by
.

Problem 6:
A forward converter, shown below, has the following parameters:

a) Determine the output voltage, the maximum and minimum currents in L, and the output

voltage ripple.
b) Determine the peak current in the transformer primary winding. Verify that the

magnetizing current is reset to zero during each switching period.

Assume all components are ideal.
Problem 7:
Design a forward converter such that the output is 5 V when the input is 170 V. The output
current is 5A. The output voltage ripple must not exceed 1 percent. Choose the transformer turns
ratio, duty ratio, and switching frequency. Choose output filter inductor Lx such that current in it
is continuous. Include the ESR () when choosing a capacitor; use .
