Study to assess cell-salvage in obstetrics

Recruiting women at emergency caesarean section needed

greater innovation. The community midwives are key in
providing information antenatally. SALVO leaflets were
included in the booking packs. Women at hospital antenatal
clinics were given patient information sheets.

The Salvo Team at Sunderland Royal Hospital

Meet the Sunderland team!

Sunderland have been our highest recruiter since April 2014.
Here they are describing their SALVO experience:
The CHS Research team were very excited about the SALVO
trial as it is expected to answer an important question on
care of women having a caesarean section. Right from the
outset the team recognised the challenges the study could
pose for recruitment. There is a large multidisciplinary team
involved in the care of women in maternity. The training was
cascaded quickly to all staff. The anaesthetists attended the
site initiation visit and were enthusiastically involved. All
the operation department practitioners were encouraged
to train to use the Cell salvage machine. Most caesarean
sections are performed by obstetric junior doctors. Their
training regarding the study was vital.
Initially recruitment was straightforward. A research
midwife would approach women at their pre-assessment
visit for their elective caesarean section and provide them
with information about the study. This gave them ample
opportunity to consider and consent to the study before the
day of the planned operation.

The CHS Research team have encouraged and supported

medical and midwifery colleagues to obtain GCP and study
specific training. The provision of this training has enabled
women to have the opportunity to participate in the study
regardless of the time their baby is born. There is always
someone, night or day, on delivery suite who can randomise
eligible and consenting women. Team work is the secret of
Sunderlands success.

Patient Information Sheets

- For antenatal
information
Weve ordered your next batches
of prints use them freely!
Remember that these can serve
as antenatal information leaflets
as well, so use them where you
would have handed out the patient
pamphlets. Some sites give out as
many as 150 copies a week!

Teleconferences
At our last site teleconference in January, we had a lively
discussion and lots of useful suggestions on improving
recruitment such as demonstrating to your colleagues how
straightforward the randomisation process is, etc. So keep
the dates for our next site teleconferences:

Friday 13th February 10:00 - 11:00

Friday 13th March 10:00 - 11:00

Friday 10th April 10:00 - 11:00

Do dial in - if youve not received the dial-in details, please get
