PROBLEM 01
Consider a company that produces aluminum profiles. The production process has the following sequence:
Extrusion: Aluminum ingots are extruded to produce the required profile. The extrusion is characterized by a
specific consumption of natural gas given by 15 m3natural gas/tonaluminum, and a specific consumption of electricity
given by 20 kWhe/ tonaluminum.
Reheat: After the extrusion process the aluminum profiles suffer a thermal treatment at ~ 180C, with a
specific consumption of 10 m3natural gas/tonaluminum.
Painting: After reheat, the profiles are painted using an equipment that presents a specific consumption of 2
kWhe/ tonaluminum.
Treatment: The profiles that present any inconsistency at the end of the painting process, undergo an
operation of treatment to remove the paint. This operation is characterized by a specific consumption of 6
kWhe/ tonaluminum. After the treatment process these profile is sent to the recycling process.
Recycling: All profiles presenting inconsistencies at the end of extrusion, reheat, or treatment, are sent to the
fusion section, where aluminum ingots are produced and then sent to the extrusion operation. The fusion
operation presents a specific consumption of 14 m3natural gas/tonaluminum.

PROBLEM 01
The inconsistencies at the end of the extrusion, reheat, and painting represent respectively 5%, 2%, and 4% of
the aluminum mass flow entering in the respective operation.
Consider that the specific consumption associated to the process raw material (aluminum ingots) is
approximately twice the specific consumption of the resulting product from the recycling process.
In these conditions, answer to the following questions, making explicit whenever necessary the adopted
simplifications:
a)
b)
Determine the expression to calculate the specific consumption of the painted profile.
c)
Determine the primary energy specific consumption associated to the painted profiles. Assuming that the
annual production is 20.000 ton, indicate justifying if this company follows under the SGCIE. If so,
determine the energy intensity target, according to the SGCIE.

CE9=12.7
CE2= 43.0
CE3=53.0
CE7=1.3
CE4= 55.6 kgep/ton
Anual consumption:
C = 0.0555 toe/ton * 20000 ton/year = 1113 toe/year > 1000 toe/year
According to SGCIE, the target in terms of energy intensity is 6% in 6 years.
CE6years = CE0*0.94 = 55.6*0.94 = 53.42 kgoe/ton.

PROBLEM 02
Consider a company that produces steel bottles to store gasses. Each bottle is made of a cylindrical body and
two half-spheres. The cylindrical element weights as much as the two half-spheres.
The production of the half-spheres starts with the disc cutting operation, followed by the cupping (where the
disc takes the shape of an half sphere). The production of the cylindrical bodies starts also with a cutting
operation, followed by an operation of rolling and longitudinal welding. The 3 pieces are then taken to the
operation of elements welding to produce a bottle. After, the bottle suffers a thermal and surface treatment in
the finalization process. The last operation is the pressure test, where the non conformities are separated from
the final product. The non conformities bottles suffer a treatment operation after the finalization process and
then are reintroduced (recycling) in the elements welding operation.
Consider that the specific consumption of the raw material can be neglected, when compared to the remaining
energy specific consumptions involved in this process. The following values for the main operations are given
bellow:

In these conditions, answer to the following questions, making the adopted simplifications explicit whenever
necessary:
a)
b)
Determine the expression to calculate the specific energy consumption of the bottles.
c)
Determine the primary energy specific consumption associated to the bottles. Indicate if the recycling
operation is reasonable in terms of energy consumption, justify your answer. Determine the limit value for
the specific energy consumption of the recycling operation (the value that rules out the advantage of
recycling in terms of energy consumption).
