LEADER 2009

Revision History Version 2009.0.8 (June 2009)

New Features
Foreign Language Project Templates
Our growing list of companies implementing HazardReview LEADER as their worldwide standard
PHA software solution have requested project templates in multiple languages. Several foreign
language project templates are now provided, including Dutch, French, German, Portuguese, and
Spanish. Look for them in the list of available templates when creating a new project file.
AutoSearch picklists for Causes, Consequences, and Safeguards
LEADER's popular Action Item AutoSearch feature has been extended to the other areas of the
Worksheet. For example, as you type a new Cause, you will see a picklist of the existing Causes in
your current project file, filtered down to those items containing the text you type. Clicking on an item
in the picklist will copy the text of that item into the AddNew row, where you can edit the item further
or add the item as is. This new feature, along with the existing Shorthand, AutoCorrect, and
AutoComplete features, gives LEADER an unmatched set of tools for reducing typing and improving
consistency.
Redo!
Last year, we introduced the Undo feature, allowing you to undo up to ten sets of actions. Now, you
can redo what you have undone, giving you more confidence in using the Undo feature.
Navigator right-click menu
Now you can right-click in the Navigator pane to access several new functions, including the
following:
Refresh the outline. This was previously the only right-click action available.
Expand/collapse the outline. This expands or collapses the entire list of Sections, showing you all
of the Deviations/Topics within each Section.
Edit the selected item within the Navigator. This much-requested feature allows you to quickly
edit the text of a Section name, Deviation/Topic description, or folder (Group) name.
Open the selected item in a new Worksheet window. This is a quick shortcut for the Open
Worksheet command on the Worksheet menu.
Show/hide Group folders. This allows you to choose whether or not to display Sections within
their Group folders.
Navigator follow me. This new option allows you to keep the Navigator synchronized with your
current worksheet location, automatically expanding the current analysis section and highlighting
the current deviation/topic. If you turn off this option, the Navigator behaves as it did in the past.
Send outline to PowerPoint. This requested feature is a shortcut to the popular Present in
PowerPoint - Outline menu item.
Hide the Navigator pane, freeing up more horizontal screen real estate for your Worksheet.
Link to a new deviation/topic
LEADER's exclusive cause-effect linking feature, LEADER Links, has been extended to allow linking
a cause or consequence in the current deviation/topic to a new deviation/topic that does not yet exist.
This new feature is primarily intended to support stream-of-thought what-if questioning where a
hierarchy of interrelated what-if topics is often developed on the fly, such as...
1.1 What if there is a release of hazardous material?
1.2 What if the line leaks?

1.3 What if the flange gasket fails?

1.4 What if the wrong type of gasket is used?
In this example, question 1.1 is the answer to question 1.2, which is the answer to 1.3, which is the
answer to 1.4. The new "Link to new topic" feature in conjunction with the existing "Jump to link"
feature allows you to quickly create this hierarchy of questions. For example, after adding topic 1.1 "What if the line leaks?", you can switch to the Causes grid for topic 1.1, enter the causal question
"What if the flange gasket fails?" and enter "1.n" in the link column to automatically create a new
analysis topic (1.2) for that causal question. Then you can right-click, Jump to 1.2, and repeat this
process for 1.3 and 1.4. This can help structure a what-if analysis as questions arise, minimizing the
need to reorganize/combine questions later and making for a more efficient analysis. This also
facilitates referencing HAZOP deviations that have not been created ahead of time, such as a specific
"Misdirected flow" identified by the team as a cause of the "Loss of containment" deviation.
Select all (Ctrl+A)
A new "Select all" function is now available on the right-click menu in Master Lists and Worksheets.
Or, you can simply type Ctrl+A to select all items in the current view. This is particularly helpful when
copying multiple Causes, Consequences, and/or Safeguards from one worksheet to another.
New advanced report
The Advanced Reports and Actions utility now includes a new risk rankings report based on
unmitigated risk rankings, as requested by users.
Update all Drawing file locations at once
One of the most popular features added last year was the capability to link to external documents
from the Drawings Master List. Linking to, rather than embedding, external documents helps keep
project files to a manageable, portable size. However, when a project file is copied or moved to
another machine, the linked document locations may not be valid on that machine. Now, when you
update one document location in the Drawings Master List, you have the option to update the
locations of all documents that were linked to the same file location on the other machine.

Enhancements
Eliminated requirement to press Enter when adding new items
The requirement to press Enter to add a new Cause, Consequence, etc., has been eliminated. After
inputting an item description in the AddNew row, the item is automatically added when you click
somewhere else or go to another deviation/topic.
Improved Undo feature
The Undo feature has been made faster by (1) moving the functions to a separate background
process, (2) improving the efficiency of reloading items in the Navigator, and (3) storing all Undo data
on the user's local drive regardless of where the project file is located. Also, there is now an option to
disable the Undo feature, which may improve performance in very large files. Finally, all open
windows are now refreshed in their existing location upon Undo/Redo to minimize the screen flicker
associated with reloading and cascading multiple windows.
Advanced sectioning simplified
The complex options for how to handle data imported from the Library have been eliminated, based
on user feedback. Now, duplicate deviations/topics from the selected equipment types are
automatically merged into a single topic. Duplicate causes, consequences, and safeguards within the
merged topics are ignored. For example, an advanced section created with two equipment types,
"Tank/Vessel" and "Line/Pipe," will have only one "Loss of containment" deviation, which will contain
only one "Corrosion/erosion" cause.

Improved Action Items AutoSearch

The AutoSearch picklist in the Action Items grid of the Worksheet now lists all action items of all types
instead of filtering on the currently selected action type. This eliminates confusion as to why some
existing items were not appearing in the picklist.
More user-friendly dialogs for customizing worksheets and master lists
The "Customize Worksheet" and "Customize Master Lists" dialogs now display with the fields of the
active Worksheet grid or active Master List expanded and the others collapsed. This makes it easier
to identify the desired fields to be customized. Also, the interface for changing the fields' column
widths has been simplified with dropdown lists and user-friendly terminology (narrow, medium, wide,
extra-wide).
Improved appearance and functionality of data grids
Worksheets and Master Lists now have more of a flat look consistent with other current software.
We have also tightened up the spacing of items and created more consistent border widths.
Worksheet and Master List grids no longer scroll horizontally with some fields hidden from view.
Now, all grid columns remain in view and are resized proportionally as a window is resized. This
also eliminates horizontal scroll bars, freeing up precious screen real estate in a Worksheet.
The AddNew row in each grid is now a different color than the main grid, making it easier to
distinguish where new items are to be added.
All of the AddNew prompts ("Click here to add a new...") are now visible upon opening a Master
List or Worksheet.
The row selector cells have been widened in several grids, making it easier to click and select
individual grid rows.
AutoLinkText now appears in blue to show that it is special, automatically generated text. If you
choose to customize the text of a linked item instead of using the automatic link text, the text will
return to the color of normal text.
Item numbers are now positioned at the top of each cell (instead of the middle) so that the item
numbers remain in view when the item's text is very long and wraps to numerous lines (e.g., a
lengthy action item)
More user-friendly dialogs for customizing worksheet publish settings
Dialogs for editing section/repeating headers, selecting worksheet columns, and appending extra
fields now are now more descriptive and include both the generic field names and custom field
names, making it much easier to select the desired fields to publish.
Faster publishing of colored risk cells
The speed of publishing worksheets with colored risk cells has been dramatically improved.
Better progress feedback in during publishing
The Publish to Word Wizard now provides more frequent and descriptive progress feedback during
the formatting of worksheets, minimizing doubt about whether the publishing process is still
progressing normally.

Updates

Worksheets now refresh as intended after choosing to hide or show a grid on the Customize
Worksheet dialog.
Addressed the issue where column header descriptions would sometimes disappear in
Worksheet grids.
Pressing Enter in the Deviation text box at top of worksheet no longer creates unwanted hard
returns without the user's knowledge. Inputting a hard return in this box now requires pressing
Ctrl+Enter.

Replaced the icons for Sections and Deviations with more generic icons that can apply to any
industry or application.
Added new icons to the Team & Drawings tab and the Deviations/Topics tab of the Worksheet.
These provide visual cues to help guide the user.
Eliminated several nuisance error messages.
Eliminated issues related to old, missing, or damaged toolbar settings files. If the toolbar settings
file is missing or cannot be read, the file is ignored and default settings are used.
Corrected an issue with the Undo feature where it would sometimes undo two sets of actions,
instead of one as intended.
Project files are now properly upgraded to the current database structure to allow linking to
external documents.
Removed ability to delete both the Name and Description of an existing section in the Sections
Master List, eliminating other related issues.
Removed ability to delete the description of a deviation/topic, eliminating other related issues.
Screen font adjustments now apply to the Navigator pane and Risk Matrix window as well as data
grids.
Navigator pane now includes a "Worksheets" label at the top to clarify the purpose of the top half
of the Navigator pane.
Import Wizard modified for Excel worksheets and Word tables to correct issues related to risk
data and cause-by-cause associations.
Restored ability to not insert a page break between published worksheets.
Display of document numbers and titles is now more consistent and readable on the Associations
tab of the Drawings Master List.
Section number in worksheet's address box now updates appropriately after analysis sections are
reordered/renumbered.
Eliminated error when a worksheet window is stretched across two screens.
Addressed a compatibility issue with Word 2000/XP that caused a nuisance error when formatting
table titles in a Full Report
Action items list now publishes correctly in the case where the first action item type in the list is
not selected for publishing.
Added menu option "show/hide worksheet tabs" to make this feature more accessible.
Custom menu/toolbar settings are now stored under the current user's Application Data directory
to help minimize issues with network security settings and to allow different users to have unique
settings on the same machine.
Each Access utility now links to the project file that is open in the instance of LEADER from which
the utility was launched, regardless of whether another project file was opened more recently in
another instance of LEADER.
