FOREWORD

ThisIndian Standard (SixthRevision) wasadopted bythe Bureau of Indian Standards, afterthedraftfinalized by

the Welding GeneralSectional Committee hadbeenapproved by theMetalluraical Engineering Division Council.
Thisstandard was first published in 1957andsubsequently revised in 1963, 1967, 1970,1974and 1991. While
reviewing the standardin the light of experience gainedduringtheseyears, the Committee decidedto revise it to
bring it in linewith the present practices beingfollowed by the IIldian and overseas industry.

In thisrevision, the following changes havebeenmade:

a) Semibasic type of covering has been included.
b) Cherniealanalysisof basicand semibasic classification hu beenprovided.
c) Percentage elongation for '0' designating digit has beenincluded.
Intheformulation ofthisstandard dueweightage hasbeen givento international co-ordination amongthestandards
prevailing in different countries in addition to relating it tothe practices inthe fieldinthis country. This has been
met by derivina assistance from the following publications:

ANNEX B
(Clause 5.2)
CHARACTERISTICS OF COVERINGANDCOATINGRATIO
B-1 ACID (A)

quantity of combustible organicsubstances, so thatthe

decomposition of the latter in arc produces a
voluminous glS shield. The amountof slag produced
is smalland the slag is cuily detached.

Electrode of acidtype havea medium orthickcovering

andproduce anironoxide,manganese oxide,silica rich
slag(with sometitaniainsomecases), themetallurgical
characteristics of which is acidic. The covering
contains, besides oxides, of iron and/or manganese
(with some titania in some cases), a fairly high
percentage of ferro-manganese and/or other
deoxidisers. The slag generally solidifies in a
characteristic honeycomb structure and is easily
detached.

This type of electrode is characterised by a highly

penetratinl arcandfairlyhigh fusion rate.Spatterlosses
are fairlyhigh and the weld bead is somewhat coarse,
with unevenly spaced ripples. These electrodes are
usually suitable for welding in aU positions. Generally,
this type of electrodes are suitablefor useon d.c. with
positive polarity, but someelectrodes arealsoavailable
whichare suitable for use on LC

This type of electrodeusuallyhas a high fusion rate

maybe usedwith highcurrentintensities. Penetration
can be good, particularly ifthecovering isthick. These
electrodes are mostsuitableforwelding inflatposition
butcan be used in otherpositions andcan be operated
bothon a.c, and d,e.

~RUTILE(R)

These electrodes have a coverinacontainina a larae

quantity of rutileor components derived fromtitanium
oxide. The electrodes have smooth arc characteristics
and normally produce very little spatter and are
comparatively easy to use. This type of electrode can
be generally used inall positions. Theseelectrodes are
used both on a.c. and d.e. The slag detachability is
generally good.

8-2 BASiC (B)

Electrodes of basic type usually have a covering

containing appreciable quantities of calcium or other
basiccarbonates and fluorspar so that metallurgically
theyarebasicincharacter. Thereis a medium quantity
of denseslag,whichoftenhas a brownto dark-brown
colourand a glossyappeannce. It is easilydetached,
andas it risesto the surfaceof the weldveryquickly,
slag inclusions are not likely to occur. This type of
electrode gives an arc of averagepenetration, and is
suitable for welding in all positions. Theseelectrodes
areused bothona.c.andd.c.where d.c.positive polarity
is generally preferred for critical applications.

11-5 RUTILE.REAVYCOATED (RR)

These electrodes are acuerally similarincharacteristics
to rotile type but bavinga hiper coatinl ratio (over
1.5). Applicationwise; it is usually preferred for flat
and horizontal vertical position thoup weldinl in
otherpositions can alsobe possible.
B-6 SEMIBASIC (S8)

Theelectrodes otsemibasictype shallbe a combination

of rotileand basiccovering.

As the weld metal is highlyresistant to hot and cold

cracking, theseelectrodes are particularly suitable Cor
welding heavy sections and very rigid mild steel
structures. Theyarealsorecommended forwelding low
alloy steels and steels of which carbon and sulphur
contentare higher than those of mild steel of good
weldable quality.

B-7 COATING RATIO

The coating ratio of an electrode is the ratio of the

standard outer diameter of the coverina and the
nominal diameter of the core wire both expressed in
millimeten.

Theseelectrodes must be stored in a reasonably dry

placeandshouldbedried beforeuse,according to the
recommendations ofthemanufacturer. Thisensures that
the weldmetalwill have a low hydrogen contentand
thereisa lessriskor underbeadcracking whenwelded
steelis likelyto showa markedhardening in the heat
affected zone.
