Answer the following questions:
1. What is Internet?
The Internet is from two words- Inter, and
net. It means that the internet is a network
of many computers around the world. Many
small networks have joined together to form
a worldwide network. That is why it is also
called Network of Networks.
2. What is ISP?
An ISP is an internet service provider. They
provide internet access to customers. They
are connected to the Internets backbone
with a fibre optic cable, a copper wire, or
satellite connections.
3. What is Newsgroups?
A Newsgroup is a structured place where
people can ask questions and get answers or
post their view on a particular topic. It is
commonly called a forum. To read a
newsgroup article, you need a newsreader,
which is usually inbuilt in main browsers.
When you post to a newsgroup, anyone on
the internet can read and respond to your
messages.

4. What is Web server?


A web server refers to the mainframe
computer that stores webpages. When it
receives a request for a webpage from a
client, it sends that webpage through the
network to the client, governed by TCP/IP
protocol.
Common web servers: Apache, IIS (Internet
Information server, Microsoft), Fast Track
(Netscape), Intra Netware (Novell)
5. What is Usenet?
Usenet, or the Users network, is a collection
of user-submitted notes or messages on
various subjects that are posted to the
servers on a worldwide network. It is also
referred to as the newsgroups.
6. What is FTP?
FTP, or the File Transfer Protocol, governs the
transfer of files from one computer to
another.

7. What is Internet Explorer?


Microsoft Internet Explorer is a very popular
web browser.

Options > General Tab > History option.
Generally, MSIE stores history of websites for
20 days.

1. Website & Webpage
A webpage is one page which you can see in your monitor at once, while a website is
composed of a number of web pages linked together. Thus, a website could refer to the
entire capabilities of the site, while a web page could be referring to a single unit of one
subject on the site.

Downloading Transfer of information/data from the server to a client computer or smaller
unit

3. Web Browser & Web Server
A web browser is a client-software that acts as an interface between the user and the

A web server is where web pages reside. Browsers access web servers to get pages to
display for the user.

A field is a column that contains categories of information, like name, phone no, serial no.
A record is a row in the table that contains information like name, address, phone no, etc.
