NON-VERBAL COMMUNICTION

1. What is communication?
The word communication is derived from Latin words, communicare or communico
which means to share. Communication is the method by which people share their
ideas, information, opinions and feelings with other people.

According to Newman and summercommunication is an exchange of facts, ideas,
opinions or emotions by two or more persons
According to Hugenbergcommunication is the use of verbal and non-verbal
communication between people trying to create shared meaning.
3. What is Non-Verbal communication?
Non-verbal communication is the process of communication without words. It is the
process of communication through sending and receiving wordless messages through the
medium of facial expressions, eye contact, body posture, movements, gestures, etc.
According to psychological research, only 7% of message is communicated through
words, while the remaining 93% is communicated nonverbally. Nonverbal messages
carry more than 13% of the weight of verbal messages.
4. Define Non-Verbal communication?

The exchange of messages primarily through non-linguistic means, including: kinesics
(body language), facial expressions and eye contact, tactile communication, space and
territory, environment, paralanguage (vocal but non-linguistic cues), and the use of
silence and time.

6. What is kinesics?
Kinesics (body language) deals with physical movement. It includes facial expressions,
eye contact, postures, gestures etc. It is the interpretation of body language which is
formally a non-verbal behavior related to movement, either of any part of the body or the
body as a whole.
7. What is Personal appearance?
Personal appearance is a significant non-verbal clue to your personality. It is
concerned with how one look in terms of stature, clothing, accessories, grooming and
style in the eyes of others.
8. What is Facial expression?
Facial expression is a primary source expressing non-verbal messages particularly for
expressing your emotions which reveals the type and intensity of your feelings through
your face. The eyes are particularly used to indicate attention and interest, influencing
others, regulating interaction and establishing dominance while communicating with
others.

Posture is the way you conduct yourself when you face an audience. It refers to the
carriage, state, and attitude of body or mind. It is a more or less stable state and thus not
to be confused with body gestures which are movements.
10. What is a gesture?
A gesture is an expression of ay part of your body, for example, your head, hands, face,
shoulders, which illustrates or reinforces your idea while you speak. It is a form of nonverbal communication made with a part of the body, used instead of or in combination
with verbal communication.
11. What is eye contact?
Eye contact is an event in which two people look at each others eyes at the same
time.Eye contact is the simple non-verbal communicative device and it is a most effective
device for securing the attention of your audience and for communicating the message
effectively. It is an important non-verbal communicative technique and the quickest way
to establish a communicative bond with your listeners.
12. Functions of non-verbal communication?
There are five primaryfunctions of nonverbal bodily behavior in human
communication:

13. What are the limitations of non-verbal communication?

Is imprecise

Cant explain complex ideas

Hard to convey two things at once

Cant convey sarcasm (contradiction between vocal tone and verbal words)

Only communicates for limited distances, and only in the present moment

Doesnt come across phone lines or in written text

Often cannot transmit factual information

Is open to multiple interpretations-easy to misread

14 . What is Meta Communication?


It is an implied meaning conveyed by the choice of words , tone of Voice , fumbling
silence or omission.
15. What is Occulesics?
It deals with eye behaviour as an element of communication. Some aspects of occulesics
deal with a static Gaze or fixed gaze versus dynamic eye movement.
16. What is Proxemics?
It involves the social use of space in a Communication situation.one aspect of this is the
closeness between and among people when they speak and the significant role culture
plays in this.
17. What is Haptics ?

It focuses on touching as an element of communication indicating both the type of touch


as well as its frequency and Intensity.

18. What is Vocalics?


It is also called as Para language.It deals with the Vocal cues , more accurately refered to
us the Non Phonemic qualities of Language.
19. What is Chronemics ?
It deals with the use of Time as as Element of Communication.
20. What is Olfactics?
It is an aspect of nonverbal communication. Dealing with smells. Though not widely
studied from a communication perspective, olfactics might include the use of perfumes
and Spices.It is associated with proxemics that, the closer people are in communication,
the more likely the smell will be relevant.

Paralanguage (Sometime called as Vocalics) is the study of non verbal Cues of the voice
of the speaker the how of it those hints and signals in the way words are delivered.
