An introduction to
Maintenance Engineering and Asset Management
Background to the course
Maintenance Engineering and Asset Management is a critical field of managerial and technical importance to UK and international industry. It is estimated that 10% of typical plant cost is spent
every year maintaining that plant. Maintenance can make the difference in competitiveness on a
global scale. Maintenance managers can make major impacts on their companies bottom line, and
often report at board level.
This course will cover a basic introduction to Maintenance and Asset Management organised by
the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering at The University of Manchester

Who is the course for?

The course content is generic in nature and so is applicable to all kind of Industries, e.g., Oil and
Gas, Nuclear, Railways, Chemical, Food processing, Energy and Power generation and manufacturing industries. This course will appeal to practising engineers, new graduate engineers and experienced managers, who are responsible for the maintenance of plant and equipment in their
organisation and need updating in the latest developments in this area.

The Course
The School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering based in the University of Manchester
is one of the UKs leading institutions in the engineering field. The School has extensive teaching
and research facilities and contracts with major industries operating throughout the world. The
School is establishing a reputation as a provider of short updating courses for engineers that will
support staff through their working lives with the latest research and business practice. All the
speakers are consultants and managers from major UK organizations and leaders in their field.

The Venue
The course takes place in Central Manchester and delegates will be based on-campus for the
three days in the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering on our Sackville Street
campus.

Course Presenters

Tom Lenahan (TLL Limited)

Since 1996 Tom Lenahan has worked as an independent consultant assisting clients achieve cost effective
solutions to difficult issues in maintenance strategy in general and turnaround management in particular.
Tom has been involved in all aspects of maintenance and built up extensive experience working for companies in the UK, USA, India, Malaysia, Russia, South Africa and the Middle East. He has been trained in advanced communication skills and has extensive experience in dealing with 'soft' people issues that are as
vital to the success of maintenance strategies as the more traditional technical issues. This has made him
expert in the role of facilitation. Tom's first book on turnaround management was published in August 1999
and he is at present engaged on developing a 'stripped down' turnaround methodology for companies with
limited resources.

John Harris (Visiting Lecturer, The University of Manchester)

Following experience in research engineering in the early UK nuclear power programme, lectured in the
School of Engineering at Manchester University where, after work in nuclear reactor physics and heat transfer he developed research interests in safety and reliability engineering and in maintenance. He co-authored,
with Tony Kelly, the pioneering textbook Management of Industrial Maintenance, and edits the journal
Maintenance & Asset Management. His research publications have dealt with topics as diverse as reactor
neutronics and heat transfer, nuclear plant containment, the maintenance of hazardous plant and the monitoring of reliability. A founder member and sometime Chairman of the erstwhile Reliability Committee of
the UK Institution of Mechanical Engineers, he contributed substantially to its handbook (published in the
Institution's Series of Guides for the Process Industries).

Paul Wheelhouse (Red Wheel Solutions Ltd)

Paul Wheelhouse is a chartered electrical engineer a member of the Institution of Engineering Technology
and a former council member of the Institute of Asset Management. After studying pure and applied physics
at The University of Manchester he worked in the speciality chemicals business for 20 years in a variety of
engineering, production and distribution roles at several locations in Europe. A large part of his time was
devoted to improving the performance of plant, work processes and the functioning of groups. For the past
fifteen years Paul has been engaged in asset management consulting. This has involved helping clients to
enhance the return on assets by improved equipment reliability, reduced working capital and the more
effective use of labour. His recent assignments have crossed a wide range of industries in Europe, Middle
East, North America and the Far East. Paul is currently a Director with Red Wheel Solutions Ltd. which
specialises in all aspects of maintenance consultancy, training and performance improvement. He divides his
time between business development, teaching and consulting.
