MISSIONARY MOTIVATION MINISTRY

lolterniaooinial
May 1987
Dear Friends in Christ:

I started this letter In Hong Kong and then got my visa

to South Africa, so this Is the news up to date:
The weeks that the Lord allowed me to spend in Hong Kong

and China have been great,

I went to China 5 times and took Bibles each

time. I spent one week in Beijing, also went with Wing Wong, who is a Chinese
missionary here in Hong Kong and has a Christian Radio Station that beams in
to China,
We visited a church house in Canton and were able.to give tl^
some Bibles, We have one Chinese man that wants to start a church there. An
other time we went into China by Ferry, about a 3 hour ride, to a house and

preached

to the villagers and baptised one young lady into Christ. She had

been listening to the broadcasts .of the Christian Radio Program of Wing Wongs.
I also enjoyed the opportunity of preaching at Ken Smyth's church. Ken is the
president of the Chinese Christian Seminary, The fellowship with him has been
very encouraging, Jo Small has been able to leave her teaching job at the
Christian Seminary in Hong Kong to teach English at a highschool in Canton,She
plans to go up the 10th and start. This leaves a great open door for her to be
able to follow up on our contacts there,
A Christian man and friends in Canton kept feeding us every

thing from fried rice and noodles to chicken feet and fish heads, 0 course I
enjoyed eating. We came back by taxi to the border of Lo Wu, Xt took 3 hours
and was a very cheap but long ride, roads were pretty good but 2 lane and traf
fic all over the place. I really love China, There are people everywhere, most
of them don't believe in anything. The Lord's Word really needs to be carried
there as doors are opening up after so long a time.
I arrived; in Johannesburg, as that is where the plane is rout"

ed to from the States, then took a nice 15 hour bus trip to Cape Town, Xt was
a double-decker and the top had seats where I sat with 5 other passagners; The
bottom level had a bar and tables. We had 2. stewardesses who served us two

meals. We left about 6:pm and arrived in Cape Town about 9 or so the next morn

ing. The trip was about like being on a plane as they had everything including
a TV and 2 movies.

You will hear from me next from Kimberley, Xxjrd willing.

Thank you for your faithful prayers and support. X also pray
for you as Ephasians, 3:14-19 says. I pray the Lord will bless you as you con
tinue to be a part of the ministry the Lord has allowed me to be involved in.
Yours in Christ,
/Jonathan Hamilton

^en we write something about mission work, that is, preaching the

Gospel of Christ somewhere other than our homeland, it concerns all those
who are in Christ. This article concerns all believers since we are re-

sponsible for preaching Christ to all those in the world who have never heard
or had a knowledgeable opportunity to accept Jesus as their Lord and Saviour.
I feel very comfortable asking for help from the churches in America

to preach the Gospel of Christ here in South Africa. It saddens me very much
to hear about the low percentage of Bible College graduates that go some place
outside the country of the U.S.A. to preach the Word. A friend of mine said
that it was less than 10 percent of the graduates at one of our larger Bible
Colleges that majored in Missions. That was a couple of years ago. Of course we
ail know t^t God wants an equal opportunity for all men" EVERYWHERE to hear the
spel of Jesus as 2nd Cor. 8, tells us. That is why Xpray that Bible Colleges
point.of sending 50 percent of their graduates overseas and the

other 50 percent preach the Word in the States. This is where it should start and
tnen send more from there on.

I just really grieve when I think of one-half the world population not
opportunity to accept Jesus as their Lord. I pray every day that we will

allow HIM to use us in a-great way. This is why I want to ask for help in preach
ing Jesus here in Kimberley, South Africa. We have several small congregations in
the area of Kimberley that desperately need help. There is so much work and so few

We don t know how much time the Lord will give us to reach the lost so we
reach the lost in the world. My oldest sister
and Husband are in Cape Town, South Africa
and are carrying a large burden, but
love It. Another sister is in Beijing, China and the other in Hong Kong working with
ing Wong, a missionary there. Kimberley is a modern town with all kinds of people
without Christ, some have never heard the Word.

June 6e July
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

I know you hear a lot about the trouble here in South Africa

back in the States, although we don't hear anything that goes,on. As far as we '
know there is no trouble. The Lord has kept us safe and well. It is good to be
in the African service again. Jon Muchan is going to be with me all of June

and July.

He is an intern from the States. Please pray"'that he will get excit

ed about mission work and that the Lord will use us both-for HIS Glory as we
visit

the churches.

I spent 2 days with Roland Joseph, the minister to the color

ed people here in Kimberely in some home Bible studies.. About 50 people met in .
one SEoall room the second nightr. They were wonderful. There seems to be a lot of
work here in Kimberely, just among the colored people. The young are excited
about getting some teaching and Evangelistic programs started, I could not stay

.at-. Roland's house because of the political situation, Roland being colored, so
I stayed in a hotel. The second day however, we found a bachelor appartment torent. It is furnished, has a bed, a big wardrobe, a small stove and a very good
refrigerator. It is simple but just what I need. It was 180 Rand a month. Jon
and I also went with Steve Zimmerman, a missionary here, to two different African

Townships to preach the last couple of weeks. We also had 4 Bible Studies during
the week.

I love ..you all and thank the Lord daily for you and your help in
the work here in South Africa, May God bless you and keep you safe.
HIS service.

NOTICE:

As of Jan. 1988 the directors of Outreach International Missi-pn.i

have advised all the Missionaries overseas to begin using their sponsor churches
as the sending body.
. ^
"
This means, that Jonathan will receive his checks 'made out to

"Marceline Church of Christ,Mission for Jonathan Hamilton. This is to eliminate

the use of Outreach International Missions name as the receiving organization
of Jonathan's funds and will keep Outreach Int'l. from having to receive funds
through their own books, in behalf of all the missionaries who now work with

Outreach Int'l. full time. This will be put into effect at the^ 1988 calendar year,
but you as a doner to the mission work of Jonathan can now begin using the Church
of Christ in Marceline as the party your check is to be made out to, with a note

that it is for Jonathan Hamilton, Missions, We believe that this is the best way
for Church sent Missionaries to remain Independent of mission organization finan
cial connections and have a single sponsoring church as the recipitant of all
funds for that missionary. The Church in Marceline is small in number and cannot
carry much financial support, but it is willing and pleased to serve as the For

warding church for the funds to be banked and sent to Jonathan. If made out to the
name of the Church of Christ, it will be deductable, but if it is made out to an

individual, such as Jonathan Hamilton, it is NOT deductable. If you have any quest
ions write or call us regarding this decision

Dear Friends in Christ:

,
The Lord has blessed us here in Klmberley, as I pray he has-you.
t s really great to be a child of God, Jon Muchan, the summer intern, left last

week to finish his schooling in the States. We really enjoyed his being here for
the two .months and the people got to know and love him. I pray it was as good an
experience for him as it was for us. Roland and I took him to the Airport in Jo'burg,
and Roland preached an ordination service at El Dorado Park. Brother Michaels was orbrought to the Lord by Roland when he first started the church about

10 years ago. A missionary. Bill Weber is helping with the church there now.

We had a good meeting in Campbell the 10th of July. Campbell is about

60 miles from Kimberley and we had about 20 people from the church here. There were

320 .people that attended the services, praise the Lord. We had a great fellowship and
a Bar-B-Que after the services. It was great to see the eagerness of the people to
hear the word of God. Also had a big service at a small town called Vaal Gamagara,
the 26th. It is about 30 miles from Kimberley and about 130 attended, one lady accep
ted Christ. We praise the Lord for the opportunity to reach these people in the outof-way places, however I do need transportation badly for such as this and ^ praying
for that.,.,The daily Bible classes in Kimberley are going well, the youth seem to be

enjoying the meetings and are growing spiritually. I have been using my flannelgraph
that I brought with me and they seem to enjoy that as some of them are illiterate so

it helps them a lot.

still cold in the evenings arid we have to dress warm. So.Africa

is having their winter. An Indian man gave me an electric tea kettle which is real

nice and boils water in less than 3 minutes which is much faster than my hot plate,
which takes about half an hour. When it gets warmer we intend going to near by towns
to evangelize. The conference this year will be held at Graaff Reinet on the last

week of September and first week of October. Pete will be preaching, Fran teaching,
and they have me down to head up a program for the youth this year. We are hoping, if
it is God s will, that my dad, A1 Hamilton will be here as the main speaker. Wish you
could be here also.

Please continue to pray for my transportation situation and most of

all that the word of God will be preached and that God will use us for His Glory and
purpose. Thank you for your prayers and support. You are in my prayers and I love
you and thank the Lord for your lives and what you mean to the work here in So.Africa.
