Google took us by surprise and introduced Android L at their

annual I/O conference back in June. Android L is the biggest
update made to Googles mobile operating system since its debut
back in 2008, both in terms of design and functionality.
Besides drastically improving the interface with the help of
Material Design, besides making notifications more accessible,
and besides introducing ART runtime, the new Android L update
also aims to address one of the biggest issues of modern
smartphones: battery life. The autonomy improvements are
centered around Project Volta, Googles attempt to bring better
battery life to Android-powered smartphones and tablets.
How big the battery life improvements will be? For example, a
Nexus 5 running Android L Developer Preview can get 30 40%
more battery life which is an insanely huge improvement. How is
this even possible? Well the new job scheduler API is one of the
factors. It instructs apps to do more of their unimportant tasks
while your phone is charging instead of while running on battery.
Another change brought by Android L is the introduction of Power
Saver mode into stock Android. You can have battery saver
always on, or you can instruct your device to turn on battery saver
as soon as your battery drops to a certain level.
The Battery screen in Settings has also been improved. It now
brings a better insight on how your battery has been used, is
capable of showing how much time you have left until your phone
dies, or how much it will take to fully charge your battery.
We are glad to see that Google is making efforts to improve the
battery life of the devices running on their mobile operating
system. Will the battery improvements be just as drastic in

Android L final as in Developer Preview? Well have to wait and

see.

Android Lollipop

battery

Battery life is a really big deal. Recent surveys

from IDCand The Guardian suggest that it's the number one
concern among smartphone buyers. We all hate it when our
phone doesn't make it through the day, but our buying
habits show we're not willing to lug around thick, heavy,

costly phones with bigger batteries. We've provided tips on

how to boost your phone's battery life, but to make a
serious difference, we need deep-down changes to the
Android operating system. Android L aims to give us that
big battery life boost through a series of enhancements
Google calls "Project Volta."
Similar to Project Butter (Android 4.1's improvements to get
everything running at 60 frames per second) and Project
Svelte (Android 4.4's push to make Android run well on
devices with only 512KB of RAM), Project Volta is not just a
singular change. It's a blanket term for a suite of
enhancements that aim to significantly boost your
smartphone's battery life.

Battery Historian

Battery Historian is a tool to track and visualize battery use.

As part of building Android L, Google created a tool

called Battery Historian that allows developers to visualize
exactly what's using your phone's battery, to what extent,
and at what time. This helped the company make a bunch
of under-the-hood changes to Android that lowers its overall
battery consumption, and it will help developers profile the
energy use of their apps.

The ART runtime

The ART runtime is faster and more efficient, and efficiency usually translates to more
battery life.
Android L brings with it the new ART runtime environment.
While it's currently available to test in Android 4.4, the
version in Android L is more advanced. Google's promising
a big performance boost to apps in addition to lots of new
features like support for 64-bit processors and apps, but
there's an impact on battery life, too.

The current runtime environment, called Dalvik, compiles

code every time an app is run (this is called "just-in-time"
compiling). ART compiles and optimizes the app's code
once "ahead-of-time", meaning less processor time spent
compiling and thus less power use. There's a lot of
technical stuff in ART (like vastly improved garbage
collection) that makes it faster and more efficient than
Dalvik, all of which translates into better battery life.

Battery Saver mode

No matter how long your battery lasts, there will be those
moments when it gets dangerously low, and stuck away
from a plug. Phone manufacturers like Samsung and HTC
have addressed this with special low-power battery saver
modes to their phones, and now, Google is building it into
Android itself.

You can adjust when Battery Saver kicks in.

When your battery drops beneath a certain threshold (the
default is 15%, but you can adjust it in 5% increments),
Battery Saver will lower the processor's speed, reduce
animations, dim the screen, and reduce radio usage. The
idea is to get power down low enough to get you to the next

charge without making your phone useless. In the Android L

developer preview, the feature really makes everything feel
like molasses, but it's better than running out of juice.

JobScheduler API
Google's upcoming Android OS adds a new feature for
developers called the JobScheduler API. It lets developers
define specific background tasks that should happen when
certain conditions are met. For example, an app could say
"wait to sync until the phone is plugged in" or "grab this data
every hour when connected to Wi-Fi." Developers have
been able to do this kind of stuff themselves, but they have
to essentially wake up the device to determine its state.

Android L adds more detailed battery stats and a prediction of how long your charge will
last.
With the JobScheduler API, developers can define the
conditions for their apps to do something in the background,

and the Android system will determine when the conditions

are met, batch together all the necessary tasks, and
perform them at once.

Does Project Volta work?

Recently, Ars Technica performed its standard battery tests
on a Nexus 5 running both Android 4.4 and the developer
preview of Android L, and the results were impressive. The
test involves taking a fully charged phone (with Battery
Saver disabled), setting the brightness to 200 nits, and
making it run a script to refresh the same set of web pages
over Wi-Fi, every 15 seconds, until the battery runs out.

Ars Technica

Ars Technica got 36 percent longer battery life with Android L. Impressive!
The developer preview of Android L lasted a whopping 36
percent longer than Android 4.4. That's another two ours of
screen-on browsing time! It's hard to say exactly how this
will translate to your own phone, loaded with a variety of
different apps running the final version of Android L, but
these early results are incredibly encouraging.

The future is mobile, the future is Android:

Google's Schmidt
Press Trust of India, March 21, 2013

Mobile is the next big thing and no company can ignore

smartphones and technologies that drive mobile applications,
Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt said Wednesday.
"In the near term, the next big thing is mobile. As it was last year
and the year before that," Schmidt said New Delhi at a Nasscom
event on the launch of an initiative on catalysing start-ups in India.
Emphasising on the growth in smartphone usage and mobile
computing, he said businesses should have their best developers
working on their mobile applications.
"As smartphones are growing, mobile apps are also going to be a
big thing and no company can ignore that," he said.

Schmidt, who has previously worked with Novell and Sun

Microsystems, said that Android will be a major player in the mobile
phone market.
"Android is going to be the majority player in the market. It supports
a lot of devices and is a great platform," he added.
Another thing which the Princeton University electrical engineering
graduate feels is important for innovation is artificial intelligence. "I
would want my computer to tell me what I have to do, who I have to
meet, what I said and what wrong did I say. More artificial
intelligence is going to drive innovation."
For a mobile app to become successful, he said that a better way is
to develop a platform which other people can use to innovate.
"Another most important thing, which a start-up needs to know is
DNROOC -- Do Not Run Out Of Cash," he advised.
On the most successful CEOs, Schmidt said that Apple founder
Steve Jobs is the most impressive person.
"Steve is the most impressive CEO. He was a complicated person
but he had a vision to change the world," he added.
For a successful business leader, he said one needs to see the
future before anyone else does it.
"Entrepreneurs are born, they cannot be created. You cannot be
trained, it has to come from within," Schmidt said.
On Google's success, he said, "We focus on hiring the smartest
people and I would advise you to look for the smartest people
around and convince them to join your company."

Android with lots of expectations.Android is an linux based
operating system which is owned by Android.Inc.Later it was
owned by Google. You dont have to be an Expert or Scientist
to give a review about this android but Anyone can who own
a Android Device.I own a Android device so i thought to have
this post.

You might have seen the word Rooting an Android on the

internet but you are not aware of what rooting is and how it works? In
this post I have shared What is rooting?, Advantages and
disadvantages of rooting an android device. This post is not
intended to teach you how you can root your android devices, Ill just
share the concept of rooting and its advantages/disadvantages.

What is Rooting (Android Operating

System)?

Rooting an android device means to get root access on your android

device. Android operating system is based on Linux and on every linux
there is a user with root access (with all privileges). Root user on linux
have rights to all files and programs, he can do anything. Similarly you
can also get root access on your android device. If you have an android
device and you think that you can do everything on it, then youre
wrong! Youre just a guest user on your device. Ill give you a simple
example so it will make sure that you are just a guest user. You can
install and uninstall applications on your android device but you cant
uninstall a default application. Default applications include Web
browser, Calendar, Clock etc. There are many more default apps
available on your device. When youll go to Settings>Apps> and
open any default applications settings, youll see Disable button
instead of Uninstall. In case of any game or application that you have
installed from Google Play, youll see a Uninstall button to remove that
application from your device.

Many people says that rooting is a good option and it allows them to
own their devices fully but many says that it is not a good option
because it can be harmful. Take a look on some common advantages
and disadvantages:

Advantages:

Running special applications If you have a

rooted android device then you can install special
applications on it. Special applications means the
applications which requires root access. You can
search on Google about which apps to download on
rooted device.
Using custom ROMs This is one of the most
powerful feature in rooted android device. There are
many ROMs available, we can use them on our
android device for variety of tasks from speeding up
to changing the entire look of the device. The below
advantages can be merged into this advantage but
Ive separated all the points so that you will
understand it better.
Uninstalling default applications You cant
remove default applications like Browser, calendar etc
on your android device. When youll go to the apps
settings you will see a Disable button instead of
Uninstall. Rooting gives you the power to uninstall any
application you like including the default ones.
Installing Linux distros You can install different
types of Linux Distros like Ubuntu, BackTrack etc, on
your rooted android device.
Boosting battery life A rooted android device
allows you to stop applications which you dont need.
You can stop them so theyll not run on background
and consume your devices battery.
Freeing phone storage Another advantage of a
rooted android device is that you can transfer

applications from your phones internal storage to SD

card. When you download and install an application
from Google play, It is installed on your phones
memory. Moving these applications into SD card will
help freeing space for new applications on phone
memory.

Disadvantages:

Risks of bricking While trying to root your

android device, you can put yourself in problem and
come up with a bricked phone. Bricked phone is just
like carrying a brick in your pocket. It can happen if
you missed out any step of the rooting tutorial which
you are followig or you flashed a corrupt zip file.
Voiding devices warranty Once your device is
rooted then it only belongs to you. If you have many
months of warranty available, then rooting your
device will help you end your warranty. If you had
done anything wrong and you wanted to get it fixed
by the company then the company will charge you
more for fixing it. There is an option to un-root in
some devices, but in most of the devices there is no
way to go back.
Viruses It is not a very big disadvantage but still It
has some potential. When you install custom ROMs,
youre not aware that what it contain. A bad ROM
developer can put malicious files in it which can harm
your device.
Battery issues You can stop default applications
to save battery life, It was an advantage but there is
also a disadvantage, which is some ROMs consume
more battery than usual. So It can cause issues
related to battery.
