PGPSE – Post Graduate Programme in Social Entrepreneurship – free for all, open for all for social transformation
In the years to come, we are going to face some critical challenges, some of the challenges that we
are going to face are :
drinking water shortage
shortage of fossil fuel based energy resources
decreasing integrity and moral values and increasing dishonesty and crime
Have you every though how you will drive your car in 2050? Have you every thought about the
possible enegy options in the next 20 years? The crisis is sure to come – but are we prepared to face
it ? Fossil fuel based energy resources (like Petrol, Diesel etc.) are limited and if we continue to
exploit them, we will find that one day we dont have any. Consumption of these energy resources is
increasing rapidly. New companies are coming up with latest technology to exploit these resources.
Shortage of these resources will lead to servere crisis.
Possible solutions :
Fossil fuel based resources are limited and therefore we have to find alternate resources for energy.
Our energy requirements are increasing rapidly and with that we shall need newer resources of
energy. What are the energy resources? Nuclear – it is not very safe and has many side effects,
Wind : it is very costly and requires huge capital investments and cannot give massive energy as per
our requirements, Tidel energy : it is available only in a few areas, biogas : it has not yet been fully
utilised – but it cannot meet all our requirements
The question is what should be alternative resources of energy. We have to find, invent, and explore
alternative resources. Many of the alternative resoruces are rejected today because of very high
operational costs and capital requirements. However, when we shall produce these at massive level,
the cost per unit will come down. Sooner or later, we have to develop alternative resources of
energy.
Breakdown of Traditional systems and values : Our traditional values encouraged us to conserve
energy and use it sparingly. However, recently, people have started over exploiting energy resources.
They are constantly over exploiting energy. We are becoming a consumer society. We consume and
consume and encourage everyone to consume a lot. We respect those who consume more and
promote those who promote consumption. Traditional values are breaking down. If you had visited
Rajasthan 50 years back, you would have found people leading a very simple life in which simplicity
was considered to be a virtue. Leaders like Gandhiji promoted the concept of simple living and high
thinking. Look at India of today. Today's leaders, cinema stars, sports stars, and all the icons of
society promote consumption. They display consumerism and promote the values of increasing
consumption. This has resulted in a society where there is no room for conservatism and frugality.
Thus we are witnessing a society which is devoid of values for economy, frugality and conservism.
Today's teenagers go to their schools on Bikes / cars. I remember, when I was a student, I could not
even think about buying a bike / automobile. At that time, students were supposed to use bicycles.
Even the director of my institute (where I was a student) used to walk down to the institute – rather
than using any automobile. Today it is a different situation. Advertisements and new social values
mock at those kids who dont use automobiles.
Let us change the world : we have to again promote values of simplicity, frugality, economy and
conservatism. We have to again promote age old values of SIMPLE LIVING – HIGH THINKING.
Let us discard all those stars, who are just advertising products just for the sake of those products
and who encourge us all to lead a life of constant consumer. Let us change our educational system,
our social system and our cultural values and understanings.
Innovations are possible : there are many institutions and organisations which are trying to innovate
to enable us to survive and grow. Look at IIM Ahmedabad for example. This institution has
extensively used Solar energy and in the night the institute is lit by solar energy only. Thus these
initiatives will help us in taking right step forward. One NGO in Bikaner has started telling
everyone in the society not to have more than 21 food items in any function in any case and not to
waste food items in any case really a good initiative – otherwise, the functions of today are simply
wastages of our scarce resources.
It is all a question of culture and our priorities. We must agin reexamine our priorities and give
importance to frugality, simplicity and conservatism. It is a difficult task, but we have to try for this.
Every second youth in India is doing MBA. Unfortunately, in the name of marketing these students
learn to promtoe consumption only. The modern curriculum of MBA programme simply promote
the values of exploitation, consumption and pomp and show. Let us again give your new generation
the values that they need.
We all can change the world – so let us come and get unitied – let us change the world. We need
entrepreneurs and social entrepreneurs in this field to use these initiatives for social transformations.
We at AFTERSCHOOOL wish that more and more youngsters should come forward and take
initiatives to become an entrepreneur / social entrepreneur – rather than just following the mob and
doing an MBA and joining some or other companies and work there as a sphisticated clerk.
Let us join together, we can certainly change the world.
