By MIKE MONOSTRA

Tabernacle residents may see a

dip in their electricity bill if the
township opts to enroll in the
Burlington County Energy Aggregation Program.
At last weeks meeting, Tabernacle Township Committee talked
about potentially joining the countys program in the near future.
We are not currently a member,
township
administrator
Doug
Cramer said. We are considering
joining.
The Burlington County Energy
Aggregation Program was announced last May. It is a cooperative
between the county and local electricity providers where the county

Kids to learn how to deal with police

New proposal would make it a requirement in school, and its a good idea

108 Kings Highway East

heres a new law being proposed in the Assembly that

would require New Jersey
schools to teach students how they
should interact with police officers.
The bill is being touted as a way to protect both kids and cops, in the wake of
highly-publicized police shootings
such as Michael Brown in Missouri.
Assemblyman Ralph Caputo, one of
the bills sponsors, had some poignant
words about why he thought the bill is
needed:
Kids have to learn how to behave
when theyre being investigated or
talked to, because they could put themselves in jeopardy. Its also a good effort
to protect the police. Kids have to recognize their authority when theyre
being questioned and how to conduct
themselves.

Your thoughts
What do you think of the proposed law
that would require schools to teach students how they should interact with police
officers? Share your thoughts on this and
other topics through a letter to the editor.

Caputos words might seem like he is

putting the blame on the deceased kids
in cases such as Browns. However, he
says hes not placing blame on anyone,
rather just seeking to educate kids on
situations they may come across that
no one speaks of: When a kid jumps
out of a car, he may appear to be
threatening but hes not he just may
not understand what those protocols
are.
Its a shame that there have been
tragic situations such as those in Mis-

souri that have forced us to propose

laws such as this to protect kids and
cops from dangerous situations. But
thats the world we live in.
Ultimately, though, we support any
program that educates our students
about life. School isnt just about math,
science, English and other traditional subjects. Its also about preparing
kids for the real world, and dealing
with police, and protection, is real
world stuff.
Education programs with police officers in schools is nothing new
D.A.R.E has been around for awhile.
This proposed law, which we support,
is just another step in the right direction to teach students how they can be
better citizens, and how they can better interact with the men and women
who are tasked with their protection.

Seneca Student Council Charity Dinner nets $1,500

Seneca Student Council sponsored its
seventh annual New Jersey Association of
Student Council Charity Dinner on Jan. 30.
This years charity was Christines
Hope for Kids. The goal was to spread
awareness of the work of this charity
while enjoying a delicious dinner prepared
by the Community Service Club.
Jean Gianacaci, founder of the charity,
gave a heartfelt and powerful presentation
of its mission. Christines Hope for Kids
was founded in order to continue Christine Gianacacis work with disadvantaged
children. Christine traveled to Haiti for a
mission of hope but lost her life in the
earthquake. Her parents founded this
charity to continue helping children.
Through the generous donations of
those in attendance, Seneca Student Council raised $1,500 for the Christines Hope
for Children.

Township moves forward with pumper truck purchase

TOWNSHIP
Continued from page 1

will negotiate a bulk purchase

of energy supply at a lower price
than residents currently pay.
County freeholders have partnered with the Burlington County Bridge Commission as part of
this program.
This (plan) will make electricity less expensive for each individual and business in Burlington County, Freeholder Bruce
Garganio said during the plans
rollout last year.
Cramer said participation in
the program means residents
would purchase their electricity
from a cooperative rather than
from the utility company itself.
Tabernacles electricity provider
is Atlantic City Electric.
Youd be buying your energy
as a cooperative of a larger

group, Cramer said.

Burlington County municipalities can choose whether to join
the program.
If Tabernacle does enroll, the
county estimates its residents
would see a 5 percent decrease in
electricity rates, Cramer said.
The township has been discussing the pros and cons of joining the program since last year.
Cramer said township officials
have talked about a couple of issues the program could bring.
One of the negatives that has
been brought up in previous discussions is, as a residential customer, you have to opt out not to
be included, Cramer said.
Once an aggregate rate is received, residents would be enrolled with Atlantic City Electric
unless they choose to opt out. Residents who opt out can then
choose to receive Atlantic City
Electrics standard rate or go with
a third-party provider. Cramer
said this would only affect a small

group of residents who are enrolled with a third-party company.

The township committee did
not make a final decision on
whether to join the program and
will continue to have discussions
in the future.

Township purchases
pumper truck
Township committee is moving
forward with the purchase of a
pumper truck that residents
voted in favor of more than a year
ago.
Township committee adopted a
bond ordinance for the new truck
during the action portion of last
weeks meeting.
Voters in Tabernacle had voted
in favor of purchasing the vehicle
in October 2013, but the vehicle
was never purchased due to the
fluid situation of the former Tabernacle Fire District No. 1. The
district was officially dissolved

last fall, with the township taking

over fire services.
The committee had made a
commitment to purchase (the
truck), Cramer said.
The total cost of the truck is
$700,000. The township will make
a down payment of $108,000, with
the remaining $592,000 to be paid
through the issuance of bonds.
The committee also passed a
resolution for Tabernacle Fire
Company No. 1 to participate in
the states Firefighter Certification Program.

Baseball provides an annual
$1,000 college scholarship award

Always respectful of his teammates, coaches and opponents,

days shy of his 15th birthday,
Sean was tragically struck and

All six donor recipients received successful organ transplants, including a young woman
