Abstract:
With the hike in oil prices and pollution in the environment due to exhaust from vehicles, this
proposed design can be a better alternative for an IC engine. And also due to the over usage of
the gasoline and other non-renewable fuels it is not sustainable for the next 50 years. The
Consumers can have a positive impact on the environment .In our study, we present working
of an engine which works by means of Electromagnetic force where two soft Iron
electromagnets are used one placed on the piston and other below the cylinder head. The
Electromagnetic force is created by means of Cam and Follower mechanism. Here, the
magnetic force is mainly used in driving the Engine. It can be used for further research and
development.

INTRODUCTION:
The aim of this project was to create
an electromagnetic force powered
engine, the main criteria being
environmental friendliness in terms of
both emissions and materials.

This report presents the design of such an

engine, which includes the following
components: engine, soft iron (which works
as electromagnets), battery and a switch.
This Engine reduces the cost of the fuel and
producing same power as that of a petrol or
diesel engine.

of this magnetic force driven engine are

NOVEL DESIGN:
Our novel idea is about the use of magnetic
power to run a reciprocating drive. The
setup consists of two similar sized soft iron
pieces, a cam and follower arrangement, a
battery, a piston and cylinder arrangement,
flywheel, an electric motor. The soft iron
pieces are wound by a wire around each of
them. The soft iron material is chosen
because:
1) The losses while using them are very low,
when compared with other materials.

2) They have the capability to allow the

change in their polarity in a short span.
3) They have long life.

WORKING:

The two soft iron pieces that are used, of

which one is fixed to the bottom of cylinder
head and other to the top of the piston as
shown in the fig.1. Two separate windings
are given to the Electromagnets and both of
them are connected to the same switch
which sends current to the two windings
simultaneously. The cam and follower are
designed in such a way that it closes the
circuit (turn on the switch) only when the
two electromagnets come nearer to each
other at TDC, thus instantaneously like
poles are created on the adjacent surfaces of
the electromagnets and producing a high
magnetic flux and thus high magnetic force.
This force imparts on the piston and the
piston moves towards BDC. As we dont use
any fuel, initially we run the engine with the

help of motor. After attainment of sufficient

speed the motor gets disengaged. The energy
is stored by the flywheel during the force
created by the electromagnets this energy by
flywheel (by Moment of Inertia principle) is
helpful in moving the piston to the TDC and
again the repulsion force is created and the
motion continues. For the acceleration
purpose we place a Rheostat (varying
resistance) so that whenever the acceleration
pedal is pressed the resistance decreases and
more current flows to the Electromagnets
and hence producing high repulsion force
and thus high speed to the Engine.
If the energy stored in the flywheel is not
sufficient to move the piston from bottom to
top end to top end, an additional cam and
follower arrangement can be provided in
order to create unlike poles to provide
attraction between the two electromagnets to
pull the piston from bottom to the top end
position and when the piston reaches top the
first cam and follower (cam 1) operates the
switch and produces repulsion force and
likewise the motion continues.

4)

Long life of the drive and

electromagnets.
5) Being run by electric and magnetic
combination, it can produce torque at
lower speeds; whereas an ` engine
requires an increased speed before it
can produce maximum power and
torque.
Calculations:
For an IC engine,
Let
F= force acting on piston.
p=pressure acting on the piston.

We know that pressure acting on piston is
3.5 N/mm2 i.e.
p=3.5N/mm2 = 3.5*10^6 N/m2
Diameter of the piston =5.5cm=0.055m

Advantages of magnetic reciprocating

drive:
1) There is no need of using gasoline.
2) Absence of IC engine as drive
results in no pollution exhausts.
3) Less transformation losses.

Conclusion:
This proposed paper, which is aimed to
make use of electromagnetic force bringing
advancement in technology for reducing
pollution from Automotives. The
components that were proposed in this paper
are reliable and cost effective. This model
doesnt require parts like carburetor,
governor and fuel tank and thus reducing the
cost of the vehicle.
