INTRODUCTIONAsian Paints Limited was established way back on February 1,1942 and today stands as Indias
largest and Asias third largest paint company. Asian Paints operates in 17 countries and has 25 paint
manufacturing facilities in the world servicing consumers in over 65 countries.
The company manufactures paints in the category of Decorative, Automotive and Industrial segment.
Apart from these the company also manufactures various accessories like, Wall Primer, Wood Primer,
Putty and Strainers etc. driven by its strong consumerfocus and innovative spirit, the company has
been the market leader in paints since 1967.
Besides Asian Paints, the group operates around the world through its subsidiaries Berger
International, Apco Coatings, SCIB Paints and Taubmans, Berger International, SCIB PaintsEgypt,
Asian Paints, Apco Coatings and Taubmans. Asian Paints operates in 5 regions across the world viz.
South Asia, South East Asia, South Pacific, Middle East and Caribbean region through the five
corporate brands viz. Asian Paints, Berger International, SCIB Paints, Apco Coatings and Taubmans. In
10 markets, it operates through its subsidiary, Berger International Limited; in Egypt through SCIB
Paints; in 5 markets in the South Pacific it operates through Apco Coatings and in Fiji and Samoa it
also operates through Taubmans.
The company is having its strategically located Indian plants at Bhandup (Maharashtra), Kasna
(Uttar Pradesh) and Sriperumbudur (Tamil Nadu), Ankleshwar (Gujarat), Patancheru (Andhra
Pradesh) and the newly built plant at Rohtak (Haryana). Asian Paints operates in 17 countries and
has 25 paint manufacturing facilities in the world servicing consumers in over 65 countries. The
company is having stateoftheart supply chain system using cutting edge technology to integrate all
its plants, regional distribution centres, outside processing centres and branches in India. All the
companys paints plants in India, two chemical plants, 18 processing centres, 350 raw material and
intermediate goods suppliers, 140 packing material vendors, 6 regional distribution centres, 72 depots
are integrated.
The company is having a big and experienced R&D team which has successfully managed to develop
Highend exterior finished and wood finishes inhouse, which was earlier imported into the country.
These products are currently marketed under Asian Paints Elastomeric HiStretch Exterior paint and
Asian Paints PU wood finish respectively.
The company is having three subsidiaries viz, Apco Coatings it is a subsidiary of Asian Paints in the
South Pacific islands. The company operates in Australia, Fiji, Tonga, Solomon Islands and
Vanuatu under the brand name of Apco Coatings.
The other subsidiary of the company is Asian Paints Industrial Coatings Limited which has been set up
to cater to the powder coatings market which is one of the fastest growing segments in the industrial
coatings market.
Berger International Limited in November 2002, became a part of the Asian Paints Group. Today, the
name of Berger is synonymous with quality and innovation. BIL has presence across three regions viz.

Middle East, Caribbean and South East Asia.Asian Paints participates in the Industrial Coatings
segment directly, through a 50:50 JV with PPG Inc. of US as well as through a 100% subsidiary
On the recommendations of Booz, Allen and Hamilton, Asian Paints restructured itself into Growth,
Decorative and International business units and has adopted SCM and ERP technology. Asian Paints
aims to become the 5th largest decorative paint company in the world

In Decorative paints, Asian Paints is present in all the four segments v.i.z Interior Wall Finishes,
Exterior Wall Finishes, Enamels and Wood Finishes. It also introduced many innovative concepts in
the Indian paint industry like Colour Worlds (Dealer Tinting Systems), Home Solutions (painting
solutions Service), Kids World (painting solutions for kids room), Colour Next (Prediction of Colour
Trends through indepth research) and Royale Play Special Effect Paints etc.

History 2014
Asian Paints (International) Ltd (APIL), a whollyowned subsidiary of Indias largest paints company
Asian Paints Ltd, hiked its stake in Berger International Ltd (BIL), to around 96.7 per cent. later BIL
was delisted from the Singapore Exchange (SGX).
2011
Asian Paints' informs that two plants of the company's subsidiary, SCIB Chemicals SAE, Egypt which
were shut due to prolonged curfew have restarted the operations partially with effect from February 06,
2011.
2010
Asian Paints announced the commencement of commercial production at its new paint manufacturing
facility in Rohtak, Haryana.
2008
The company performs Bhoomi Pooja at its proposed paint plant site at Rohtak in Haryana.
2007
Asian Paints enter into a share purchase agreement for the sale of its stake in Asian Paints Queensland.

Asian Paints is the only Paint Company in the World to be awarded the Forbes Best under a Billion
companies in the world.
2003
Asian Paints (India) awarded the 9.2% stake after emerging the highest bidder at a bid price of Rs 205
per share for a total value of Rs 77.09 crore.

Berger International (BIL) the Singapore based subsidiary of Asian Paints, Asia s fourth largest paint
company, has entered into a technical consultancy and advice arrangement with Berger Paints Pakistan
Limited, the second largest paint company in Pakistan.

company Balmer Lawrie rejects the products of a giant British paint company in favour of Asian
Paints. Asian Paints embarks on an ambitious grassroots marketing campaign, partnering with
thousands of dealers in small towns all over India.

1945
Asian Paints touches a turnover of Rs. 3,50,000, with an innovative marketing strategy 'to reach
consumers in the remotest corners of the country with small packs.' 1954 Asian Paints mascot, Gattu,
the mischievous kid, is born.
1st February, 1942
Armed with little knowledge and great determination, Champaklal H. Choksey, Chimanlal N. Choksi,
Suryakant C. Dani and Arvind R. Vakil get together to manufacture paint in a garage on Foras Road,
Bombay. They name their company 'The Asian Oil & Paint Company', a name that they picked
randomly from a telephone directory.

and 2013.
2. Asian Paints was ranked 13th amongst the top paint companies in the world by Coatings World

Logo change
The brand also went in a brand overhaul. The logo was changed to a contemporary upmarket, the
logo/design was to convey self-expression, sophistication and Technology. Thus came the birth of a
wonderful positioning strategy created by O&M. The insight was that the brand is about people and
homes and homes reflect the people living in it. Hence " Har Ghar Kuch Kehta Hai" translated to "
Every Home has a story to tell".
This campaign is a perfect example of a brand laddering up and connecting to a higher level in the
mind of the customer. The campaigns reinforced the brand as a premium emotional brand. Along with
the campaign Asian Paints also ran parallel ads for its sub brands. Saif Ali Khan endorsed the premium
brand Royale. For Apex Ultima, the campaign was highly localized and was different in different
market.

KANSAI NEROLAC
IntroductionKansai Nerolac Paints was incorporated in 1920 as Gahagan Paints and Varnish Company. Later in
1930, three British companies were merged and Lead Industries Group was established. Today Kansai
Nerolac Paints is amongst the leading paint companies in India headquartered in Mumbai, companys
manufacturing facilities are located at Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Haryana.
In India the company has presence in Assam, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya
Pradesh, Orissa, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Punjab, Uttaranchal, Bihar, New Delhi, Tamil
Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and many more.

Lead Industries Group was established by merger of three British companies.
1933
Lead Industries Group acquired 100% stake of Gahagan Paints and the company was renamed as
Goodlass Wall (India)
1946
Goodlass Wall was converted in private limited company.
1957
Goodlass Wall was renamed as Goodlass Nerolac Paints and went public in the same year.
1976
After acquisition Goodlass Nerolac Paints became part of Tata Forbes Group
1983
Goodlass Nerolac Paints entered into technical collaboration with Kansai Paint Co. and Nihon Tokushu
Toryo Co. of Japan.
1986
Goodlass Nerolac Paints Ltd. turned into a joint venture of the Tata Forbes and the Kansai Paint Co.,
with the latter acquiring 36% stake in the company.
1999
Kansai Paint Company, Japan acquired the entire stake of Tata Forbes group and thus Goodlass Nerolac
Paints became a wholly owned subsidiary of Kansai Paint Company.
2006
Goodlass Nerolac Paints was rechristened to Kansai Nerolac Paints.
In 2012 Kansai Nerolac decided to enter JV with Nepal Shalimar, to acquire 68% stake in Nepalese
paint major.

SHALIMAR PAINTS
Introduction Shalimar Paints is an Indian paints manufacturing company. The company is engaged in
manufacturing and marketing of decorative paints and industrial coatings. Some of
Indias iconic buildings and structures such as the Howrah Bridge, Rashtrapati Bhawan,
Salt Lake Stadium, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, and many others, continue to
be painted with Shalimar Paints.
It can be said that the history of Shalimar Paints is the history of the paints industry in
India and also in South East Asia. Shalimar Paints was founded in 1902 by two British
entrepreneurs AN Turner and AC Wright as Shalimar Paints Colour & Varnish Ltd. In
the same year, the company set up a large scale manufacturing plant in Howrah, West
Bengal, the first such plant in entire South East Asia. In 1928, Pinchin Johnson &
Associates of UK bought control from the British entrepreneurs AN Turner and AC
Wright. In 1963, the company's name was changed to Shalimar Paints Ltd. after Turner
Morisson & Co stepped in as new management.
With access to high-end technology, the company introduced many firsts in the
industrial coatings segment such as high build zinc coatings, radiation resistant coatings
for nuclear power plants, polyurethane paint for fighter aircraft and railway coaches,
among others. Shalimar was the first company to paint a fighter aircraft for the Indian
Army.
History In 1972 Shalimar went public and in 1989, the company was acquired by the O.P. Jindal
Group and the Hong-Kong based S.S. Jhunjhnuwala Group. In April 2013, Mr. Sameer
Nagpal was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of the company and in August
2013, Mr. Nagpal was elected as Managing Director and CEO of Shalimar Paints by the
Board of Directors, effective May 2013.

In 2013, Shalimar Paints started a journey of strategic transformation to become one of


the top players in the decorative paints segment. As part of the strategy, the company is
transitioning to become a more consumer-centric company by growing its decorative
business. In 2014, this century-old paint brand rejuvenated its logo and refreshed its
positioning to connect with today's consumers.
Recognizing the brand's transformation, Shalimar Paints was awarded the Brand
Excellence Award for Brand Revitalization by Ananda Bazar Patrika (ABP) Group in
association with World Marketing Congress. Apart from rejuvenating its brand, the
company is improving its product mix, launching new products, strengthening
relationship with dealer partners, improving distribution and augmenting manufacturing
capacity.
Shalimar Paints is present in over 1000 cities and towns of India through a network of
more than 8000 dealers. The company currently has three manufacturing units in
Howrah, West Bengal; Nashik, Maharashtra; Sikandrabad, Uttar Pradesh and a new
plant is coming up in Goomidipoondi, near Chennai. It has two Research &
Development centers in Howrah, West Bengal and Nashik, Maharashtra, focusing on
technology, product and process innovations.

coatings. Shalimar's decorative business covers both interior and exterior paints where it
