I. INTRODUCTION
All of us are personality experts. Ever since childhood, weve been
paying attention to peoples distinctive ways of being in hopes of figuring out
what to expect from them. We depend on this information to get along. The
innate ability to size people up is an amazing gift that we take for
granted. With it, we form an instantaneous impression of the personality of
everyone we meet. This rapid intuitive process works so well that we learn
to rely on it. Most of our assessments of people are formed in this automatic
and unconscious way.
But there are times when we want to consciously evaluate someones
personality. Some peoples personality intimidate us and some impress you.
There are also times that we envy others for being pleasing and poise in
front of many people.
The way people act and behave depends on their personality. People
exhibits different personality traits. Personality traits are defined as the
relatively enduring patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that
distinguish individuals from one another. It is the reason why we act
indifferently from one another.
Peoples personalities continue to develop throughout lifetime. Specific
traits change at different rates and to different degrees. Some personality
traits seem to remain constant at a persons life, while others undergo
dramatic changes. Every individual has a distinct persona that can be
developed, polished and refined, that is why personality development was
establish. Personality development means enhancing ones inner and outer
self to bring a positive change in ones life.
Personality development is more obvious during childhood days, it is
the time when one experiences rapid physical, emotional and intellectual
growth. During adulthood, personality changes at slower rate.
Our personality reflects the way we think and adopts to everything that
is happening around us. It also determines the way we belong ourselves to
the people surrounds us. That is why a good personality will lead to a
successful career path.
One undergoes Personality Development to have a pleasing personality
that will attract people. When interacting with different people with different
personality it is important that you deal with them without pissing off
anyone. It is also important that you cope up with the different personality of
people you deal with everyday.
II.
BIOLOGICAL FAMILIAL
People born with different qualities and characteristics based on the
genetic make-up of our body which we cannot change. Biological facets of
personality are very important for the formation of human personality.
Children are born in a family; inherit many traits and features from their
parents. Children get physical and psychological characteristics from their
parents which become part of their personality.
The working of the nervous system, glands and blood chemistry
determines our characteristics and habitual modes of behavior.
ENVIRONMENT
Sociologists emphasizes that the personality of individual develops in
a social environment. It is in the social environment, that he starts to have
moral ideas, social attitudes and interests, this enables him to develop a
social-self, which is another term for personality.
Physical Environment
Physical environment also determines personality of an individual.
Environmental factors include land, river, mountains, hills, forests, plain
area, atmosphere and other things which influence the climatic
conditions of particular area on man and his living, affects the personality
to be good or bad, healthy or weak. All the feelings, emotion, ideas,
attitudes, habits or behavior as well as body structure is the result of
physical environment of to which an individual belongs. For example,
body structure, physique, color and health of the rural people are
different from urban people. These people develops personality at
different environments due to which they develop variety of
personalities. The people living in cities have facilities and modern ways
of life which caters to develop delicate bodies and minds compare to the
people in rural areas who are sometimes deprived of those facilities.
Family Environment
Family is the foundation of all social virtues of one person. The first
environment the child experience is in home. Here, the child comes
contact with his parents and other family members, his like, dislikes,
stereotypes about people, expectancies of security and emotional
responses are all shaped in early childhood.
The type of training and early childhood experiences received from
the family plays an important role in development of personality.
Cultural Environment
An individual living in his culture adopts the traits consciously or
unconsciously and acts accordingly. Culture of any society determines the
behaviors and personality of an individual and expect to act according to
the culture. A person follows social norms of a culture which results in the
formation of good personality while nonconformity to the cultural rules
develops abnormal or bad personality. So, the culture in which an
individual seeks satisfaction adjusts themselves to the development of
their own personality.
EXTRAVERSION
Extraversion is the tendency to actively reach out to others. People
high in Extraversion are stimulated by the social world, like to be the center
of attention, and often take charge. They also like excitement and are
inclined to be upbeat, fun loving, full of energy, and to experience
positive emotions. People low in Extra-version are less interested in
interpersonal interactions and tend to be reserved and quiet. But their
relative lack of interest in being with people need not indicate that they dont
like them, or that they are socially anxious or depressed; they may just
prefer to be alone.
AGREEABLENESS
Agreeableness is the tendency to be altruistic, cooperative, and goodnatured. People high in Agreeableness are considerate, compassionate,
helpful, and willing to compromise. They truly like people and assume that
everyone is decent and trustworthy. People low on Agreeableness are more
self-interested than altruistic, more competitive than cooperative, and
likely to be skeptical of others intentions. They also tend to be cold,
antagonistic, and disrespectful of the rights of others.
CONSCIENTIOUSNESS
Conscientiousness is the tendency to control impulses and to
tenaciously pursue goals. People high in Conscientiousness are orderly,
reliable, hardworking, neat, and punctual. They tend to plan ahead and think
things through. They are more interested in long-term than short-term goals.
People low in Conscientiousness are more spontaneous, less constrained,
less dutiful, and less achievement-oriented. Although Conscientiousness
shows up prominently in the performance of tasks, it also influences
interpersonal relationships.
NEUROTICISM
Neuroticism is the tendency to have negative feelings, particularly in
reaction to perceived social threats. People high in Neuroticism are
emotionally unstable, tend to be upset by minor threats or frustrations,
and are often in a bad mood. They are prone to anxiety, depression,
embarrassment, self-doubt, self-conscious-ness, anger, and guilt. People
low on Neuroticism are emotionally stable, calm, composed, and unflappable.
But their freedom from negative feelings does not imply that they are
particularly inclined to have positive feelings.
OPENNESS
Openness is the tendency to be imaginative and to enjoy
novelty and variety. People who are high in Openness tend to be
artistic, nonconforming, intellectual, aware of their feelings, and
comfortable with new ideas. People low in Openness prefer the simple,
straightforward, familiar, and obvious to the complex, ambiguous, novel, and
subtle. They tend to be conventional, conservative, and resistant to change.
Although people who are high on Openness enjoy the life of the mind,
Openness is not identical with intelligence. Highly intelligent people can be
high or low on O.
POSITIVE ATTITUDE
An individual with a negative mind finds a problem in every
situation. Rather than cribbing and criticizing people around, analyze the
whole situation and try to find out an appropriate solution. Personality
development plays an important role in developing not only your outer or
inner self but also your outlook in life. It helps you gain recognition and
acceptance from the society as well as the people around you.
ENHANCE SELF-CONFIDENCE
Individuals need to have a style of their own for others to follow
them. Do not blindly copy others. You need to set an example for people
around. Personality development not only makes you look good but also help
you to face the world with a smile and confidence in you.
CONTRIBUTE TO SUCCESS
As you might be well aware of, emotional intelligence and
personality go hand and hand. This is why personality development holds a
vital role in a persons ability to succeed in every career he chooses to take.
If you are easily frustrated, without the capability to handle stress brought
about by work-related events, then it will be easy for you to give up during
difficult times.
RUDENESS
Rudeness is often a sign of weak character. Rude people have not
yet realized, or simply do not care, that impoliteness, discourtesy and even
offensiveness are low on most people's lists of preferred character traits.
DISHONESTY
This is the trait that most people abhor. Everybody lies whether it is
a white lies or a big. However, when someone lies constantly, it is very
irritating and annoying especially pointing out that they have been lying and
they continue with it.
PESSIMISM
Person who has this type of personality emphasizes only bad or
undesirable outcomes. They always moans about their job, their house, their
life, children, family, etc. being with this type of people can be very draining
and sap
Others energy.
TEMPARAMENTAL
Person having this type of personality tends to change their mood
very suddenly. They are not trustworthy nor can give full concentration on
any particular work.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Acquisition of communication skills that is having command over
the language and an ability to articulate is an important factor in personality
development. Speak in a clear tone and in a forceful manner. One must be
cautious over the command of his/her language taking care of the grammar,
pronunciation, stress, intonation and voice modulation.
SELF-DISCIPLINED
Self-discipline person are those are those who are self-governed
and self-responsible. They do not need others directions. They themselves
set worthy goals and pursue them earnestly.
BE A GOOD LISTENER
A good listener is often appreciated for his compassion and
consideration towards others, which once again is a sign of a
positive personality. A person must cultivate the skill of listening;
Suspending ones own agenda and deliberately and
empathically allow others to be heard. While listening look a person in the
eyes, hang on their every word, and make them feel important.
POSITIVE OUTLOOK
Thoughts are the real foundations of ones personality. Keep the
thoughts positive and nature cordial. Healthy mentality and positive thoughts
make your personality successful. Compare oneself with others is a way
of insulting self.
CONFIDENCE
A look of confidence on the face impresses everybody. If you
walk with a feeling of failure and frustration on your face people will shun
away from you. When facing difficulties and worries in life one must
maintain think and look positive. Speak less and with conviction. Such simple
actions will maintain confidence. Self Confidence cannot only conquer the
mountains of difficulties but also the win others heart.

DEVELOP COURAGE
Courage is one of the most important ingredients of a strong
personality. Courage is a persons backbone. A courage person states what
he wants to do and goes ahead and does it. A strong desire force is a
wonderful power it will help a person to accomplish his/ her goals.
A person with courage has persistence and does not give up
until his/ her desire have manifested.
VII. CONCLUSION
Personality is what makes a person a unique person, and it is
recognizable soon after birth. It is the characteristics and appearance of a
person - pattern of thought, feeling, behavior, communication ability and
physical features .Personality is defined as the combination of characteristics
or qualities to form an individuals distinctive character making someone
interesting or popular in the society. Psychologically speaking personality is
all that a person is. It is the totality of ones own behavior towards oneself
and others as well. It includes everything about the person, his physical,
emotional, social, mental and spiritual make up.
Personality development is the development of the organized
pattern
of behaviors and attitudes that makes a person distinctive. Personality devel
opment occurs by the ongoing interaction of temperament, character, and
environment.
It is also be stated as progressive organization of the
psychological traits unique to an individual, occurring as the result of
maturation and learning from birth through adulthood. It is does to avoid
personality disorders and helps you to be successful in life. One of the key to
success is to have a good personality that stands out from others.
Personality development plays an essential role not only in an
individuals professional but also personal lives. It makes an individual
disciplined, punctual and an asset for his/her organization. An undisciplined
individual finds it difficult to survive in the long run. Personality development
teaches you to respect not only your Boss and fellow workers but also family
members, friends, neighbors, relatives and so on. Never make fun of anyone
at the workplace. Avoid criticizing and making fun of your fellow workers.
