Pathways Kids Midweek Small Groups

This Weeks Scope

Bible Story: Dont You Forget About Me (the least of these) Matthew 25:35-40
Bottom Line: Be kind to people who are overlooked.
Monthly Memory Verse: Do to others as you want them to do to you. Luke 6:31, NIrV
Virtue: Kindnessshowing others they are valuable by how you treat them.
Basic Truth: I should treat others the way I want to be treated.

This week, were discovering:

Matthew 25:35-40, where well revisit one of Jesus teachings on kindness. For one reason or another,
people are overlooked every dayno one even notices them, much less shows kindness to them. But
Jesus says that when we show kindness to one of the least of these, its as if were showing kindness
to Him. We hope kids discover how they can show kindness to people who are overlooked in their
world.
Bottom Line: Be kind to people who are overlooked. Some people are easier to show kindness to
than others, but everyone deserves to be treated like theyre valuable, no matter who they are.
Our memory verse is Luke 6:31, Do to others as you want them to do to you. (NIrV) This simple
verse is a great reminder of what Jesus said about kindness. We would want others to show kindness
towards us, so its important that we turn around and show kindness to them as well.

their points.
Convo starters: Have you ever had to look for something that was lost? What was it? How long did
you look for it? Did anyone help you look? Did you find what you were missing?

Large Group Game (PK Konnect)

This week we will be working on a small missions project. Ryan or Jenny will lead the group in this
activity.

Small Group Activity (PK Konnect)

Kindness Turnover (application activity / great for active learners)
What You Need: Chairs or placeholders
What You Do:
Make a circle with one less seat than the number of kids in the group. Pick one person to stand in the
middle and tell everyone else to choose a seat. The person in the middle will say something kind that
theyve done for someone else. If anyone else in the group has done it, they have to stand up and
change seats, but they cant sit in the seat directly beside them. The person in the middle also finds an
empty seat. The person left without a seat goes to the middle, and they say something kind they have
done. Keep repeating until everyone has been caught in the middle (or until the game has gone on for
a reasonable amount of time).
What You Say:
Those were lots of kind examples. I really love your hearts, especially after hearing how important it is
to God that were kind. I really love how Jesus is kind to everyone. He doesnt overlook anyone. He has
enough kindness for everyone. [Apply] How can that be true of you, too? Can you think of a way
to show kindness to someone who is often overlooked? Tell me when you plan to do this. (Let a
few kids answer.) Great stuff! So this week we have a new challenge: not just to be kind, but also to
[Impress] be kind to people who are overlooked. Lets do it!

Spaces (application activity / review the Bible story)

What You Need: Paper, colored pencils, Bibles
What You Do:
Open the Bible to Matthew 25:35-40 and read the verses from the Bible story out loud.
Hand out paper, and guide kids to divide them into four spaces by folding the paper in half two times,
making four equal parts. Instruct kids to label them: 1) hungry, 2) thirsty, 3) cold, and 4) lonely.
Then ask: How would you want to be treated if you were hungry? thirsty? cold? lonely? Ask the kids to
draw a cartoon to illustrate their answer in each space.
After they complete their cartoons, point out that the Memory Verse says to treat others how we want to
be treated. Sometimes that means that when we see people who are hungry, thirsty, cold, or lonely, we
should respond like in the cartoons. Then remind kids what Jesus saidthat when they do these
things, they do it for Him! Finally, reread the Bible story one more time.
What You Say:
[Apply] What would it look like for you to really put those cartoon squares into action? (Pause
for some responses.) How could you do it in your neighborhood or at your school? (Pause for
some responses.) Whats holding you back? (Pause for some responses.) Remind yourself that
Jesus said that when you are kind to people who are overlooked, you are being kind to Him. Sign me
up for that! So lets find ways to [Impress] be kind to people who are overlooked.

Small Group Activity / Discussion (All Stars)

Cheat Sheets (application activity)
What You Need: Note cards, pencils
What You Do:
Hand out the note cards and pencils so every student has one of each. Spend a few moments
brainstorming together the different categories in their life, such as: home, friends, school,
neighborhood, world, extracurricular activities, and more. (Note: If someone mentions church, you can
use this to affirm that church activities are be a part of our lives, but as Christians, how we respond to
following and believing in Jesus should show up in all those other categories as well. Our faith is not
just something that shows up when were at church but something that should impact every area of our
lives.)
Next, have them prepare to write down the top six areas that they feel take up most time in their lives.
Theyll write three on one side of the card and three on the other side of the card, leaving a blank space
under each category to write something else down.
Finally, brainstorm some of the different ways that each of these areas can use some added kindness
to not overlook the needs of the people kids interact with in those areas. For example:

Home: Call your grandparents on a weekly basis to tell them you love them.
Neighborhood: Take care of a busy neighbors yard or garbage.
School: Make a thank you card for staff members, from teachers to administration to
administrative assistants to the custodial team.

Once the kids have completed their cards, give them the opportunity to share one idea with the group.
Challenge them to carry this note card around with them all week long wherever they go as a minicheat sheet to prompt them to take action.
[Make It Personal] (Share about a time when you did something out of the ordinary for an
overlooked person and you felt like it made that persons day.)
What You Say:
What if acts of kindness like this are how we can join Jesus in changing the world? [Apply] We would
have to be as intentional about making sure it came across as more than good deeds, perhaps
by telling people that you hope your actions remind them that God loves them. Show others they
are valuable by how you treat them, especially making sure to [Impress] be kind to people who are
overlooked.
Possible discussion questions
What do you think the phrase us versus them means or implies? Are these words that bring
people together or separate them? Why do you think this?
Do you think its possible to try and be so considerate of another persons feelings that it
changes who you are in a bad way? Explain.
When have you felt someones attention to you was just what you needed in that moment? Why
did it make such a difference to you?
What is something you think someone around you would like to tell you or talk more about if
youd give them the time for it?
In what area of your life do you sometimes feel overlooked? What is one kind of kindness youre
hoping someone might show you? Describe how that would make you feel.
Possible Prayer Time
What You Need: No supplies needed
What You Do:
Instruct kids to spend some time silently praying for the person they made their cards for. (If you did not
do cheat sheets above, ask kids to silently pray for someone they think might be overlooked.) As they
pray, silently pray for each of them.
What You Say:
It was really neat watching you all pray. While you were praying, I prayed for you. [Apply] Now lets
keep praying for these people all week, and I want you to make time to give them their cards and
let them know that youve been praying for them. I think it will really mean a lot. [Make It
Personal] (Tell your group about someone you plan to pray for this week and how youre going
to tell them youve been praying for them.) I know sometimes it feels awkward to give someone a
card or tell them youre praying for them, so Im going to pray that you all have the courage to show
kindness in this way. [Impress] Be kind to people who are overlooked.
