PROBLEM SET 1 - Part 2 of 2
2nd Semester AY 2014-2015

11 February 2015

WARNING: Each item is ALL or NOTHING. You know what I mean. See Part 1 for the instruction.
I. Given the functions f (x) = x/(x 1) and g(x) = 1/(x + 2), find (a, 2 pts) (f g)(x), (b, 2 pts)
(g f )(x) and (c, 2 pts) the domain and range of (f g)(x) and (g f )(x).
II. (a, 3 pts) Sketch by hand the graph of the function and (b, 2 pts) determine its domain and range.
For 1 and 2, simplify first the function by defining it piecewise.
1. f (x) = |x||x 3|
2. f (x) = x2 [|x|]

VII. To study the rate at which animals learn, a psychology student performed an experiment in which
a rat was sent repeatedly through a laboratory maze. Suppose that the time required for the rat to
traverse the maze on the nth trial was approximately T (n) = 3 + 12/n minutes.
1. (1 pt) For what values of n does T(n) have meaning in the context of the psychology experiment?
2. (2 pts) How long did it take the rat to traverse the maze on the 3rd trial?
3. (2 pts) On which trial did the rat traverse the maze in 4 minutes or less?
4. (2 pts) In the long run, how fast will the rat be able to complete the maze?
VIII. If a pond can support up to 10,000 fish, the rate of growth of the fish population is jointly proportional
to the number of fish present and the difference between 10,000 and the number present. The rate
of growth is 90 per fish when 100 fish are present.
1. (4 pts) Find a mathematical model expressing the rate of population growth as a function of the
number present.
2. (1 pt) What is the domain of your function in part (1)?
3. (3 pts) Show that the function is continuous on its domain.
IX. (10 pts) Based on the figure below, what is (a) lim f (x) ; (b) lim f (x); (c) lim f (x); (d) lim f (x);
