Tutorial #2: Installing Oracle XE 11G for Windows 7 64 bits.

I'm back with my second tutorial (after years since last time I wrote one xD )!
This is one of my Enterprise System assignment and it takes me days to install this
program and Compiere 3.3 (will be posted soon later); siao a! because I am too
dumb to ask friends about it and try to solve this by myself.
I am composing this tutorial to install Oracle XE because I have gone so much
trouble in installing this software, and I succeeded so I hope this will help you
during installation (^^*)
I assume you are stumbling upon this page because of these reasons:

You googled about some error keywords about Oracle XE 11G installation.

You try to find "how to install Oracle XE 11G for Windows 7 64 bits".

You come here from your blogger dashboard feeds.

You are my regular reader--and here's a chu for you *

Don't worry, I've composed step-by-step below so you can take a look and install
your Oracle XE 11G well.

IT Noobs--in action!
So I share this tutorial for you who have difficulties in installing Oracle XE 11G for
Windows 7 64 bits, since the installer itself is set for Windows 7 32 bit.
There might be some glitches during installation (because the Software is designed
for Windows 7 32 bits, while you're using Windows 64 bits--otherwise you won't be
meeting the same problems that will be stated below) and I'll show you how I went

through those problems until it is installed successfully in my laptop.

The reason I am writing this is because I've been googling for days to install this
program and it took me tutorial pages (more than 10 links of websites and blogs I
opened) to install this holy program.
I hope by writing down all glitches for installing Oracle XE 11G it will save you a lot
of time for reading this one page here rather than googling until page 8++.

Before reading further, you must make sure that:

Your OS is Windows 7 64 bits (you don't say); to confirm this please see the
properties of "My Computer".

You're going to stay in front of your laptop for quite a while (because
installing takes a lot of time)~~~~(- -*)

You got to get some snacks and drinks ready.

Please be mentally and physically ready--I was stressed a bit while installing
this and failed through the way--haha!

Ready~~~~let's go!
First step is, you have to successfully download the Oracle XE11G file from the
website: here.
You may need to register yourself to Oracle website before downloading anything.

Extract the zipped folder you've downloaded, and run the "setup.exe" file from
OracleXE112_Win32\DISK1\setup.exe.
Note: please run the installer as Administrator.

Installation happens like usual. You just have to wait for it installing for a while
(*-)

After this, the first problem will occur (commonly for Windows 7 64 bits), you'll find
this dialogue:

The installer is unable to instantiate the file C:\Users\ \KEY_XE.reg. This

file does not appear to exist.

Don't worry ladies and gentlemen! Don't panic! (Although I was panicking at that
time bcs I met this problem for a few times). (>.<)

You don't need to close this dialogue and restart all things at once--no no.
I have the solution for you:

You gotta type the address indicated on the dialogue box (the random
numbers after \Temp\ may vary in any of you), so for my address indicated is this:

C:\Users\Miaojuan\AppData\Local\Temp\{8D6436F9-C040-4885-9DCD32A8781DC437}\

no need to write the KEY_XE.reg. (*^O^*)/

Then, you let the dialogue box open, and you go to your taskbar, click "Start", and
on the search box, type in : regedit.

Open the regedit program, and you'll see this window.

Note: please open the regedit as Administrator.

You need to locate this folder : HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT Installer Products

266B7A503.... SourceList Media and you'll see the folder opened below.

Under the name field, you'll find a file named 1--on the same row under the data
field you'll see "DISK1;1".
You right-click on it and click "Modify".

Fill in the Value data with the address you've taken note before:
C:\Users\Miaojuan\AppData\Local\Temp\{8D6436F9-C040-4885-9DCD32A8781DC437}\ .

If you're finished, click OK and close the regedit window.

Return to Oracle installer, and click OK on the error dialogue box.

You'll have to wait for a while until the installation continues and it will succeed.

Click on Finish when it's done **

Now, test the application!

We're hoping that the installation has gone well and nothing is wrong--not anymore.

But to make sure, let's test the database application. So, please head to Start and
locate the Oracle XE folder.

Try to click on the "Get Started" file and cross your finger so it will work!
*cross finger* *mumble*

After a while, "praise th---"

Windows cannot find 'http://127.0.0.1:%HTTPPORT%/apex/f?p=4950'. Make

sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.

Pause : (Up to this step, if you're succeeded opening the browser and the Oracle
page without error dialogue above popping out, then you're succeeded. You may
skip the tutorial and scroll down :D ).

If you meet this dialogue box, don't panic!

Seems like the browser doesn't support the local IP address ( http://127.0.0.1/ ) and
this is why the "Get Started" can't work.

Again, please head to Start, locate the Oracle XE folder and "Get Started" file.

Right click on the "Get Started" and click Properties.

Click on Open File Location and Windows Explorer will open.

Find the "Get Started" file, right-click it and click on Properties.

Make sure that the URL entered on the field is :

http://127.0.0.1:8080/apex/f?p=4950

On the URL field, try to copy the whole address there (

http://127.0.0.1:8080/apex/f?p=4950 ) and paste it on your browser.

See if that address will direct you to the page like above or not.
If it's the same, then the "Get Started" file should be working by now.

No need to change anything on the URL field. Just close the properties window and
try to execute the "Get Started" again.

Note: if the address is still not working on your browser (or you're not directed to
anywhere), on the URL field replace the 127.0.0.1 with localhost.

So it will be :
http://localhost:8080/apex/f?p=4950

Anddddd it should be working now! Yay (**)

You can start deploying your database for your assignment, for anything.

Additional information from one of my reader TMZ83:

Hi.
we have had problem installing xe, even with this tutorial.
pratically oracle wasn't working.
the oradata folder was empty.
The problem was that the machine did cannot resolve the hostname, so we add the
properly string to the hosts file (tipically c:/windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts )
Re-do the setup, and everything works well :)
I'll write another tutorial (the continuation of this tutorial) where we can install
Compiere 3.3 Open Source ERP soon after this tutorial, so stay tuned!
