DescriptionofProgramme
TheProgrammecatersforthoseinterestedintourismfromasustainabilityperspective
andprovidesknowledgeandskillsrequiredforparticipationinresearchandqualified
developmentworkwithinthisarea.Basedonatourismstudiessubjectfoundation,the
Programmeprovidesacomprehensivespecialisationinsocial,cultural,financialand
environmentalaspectsoftourismfromasustainabilityperspective,includingsustainable
development.Thereisaclearfocusonprovisionofskillsforanalysing,planningand
evaluatingtourismandtourismrelatedoperationsbasedondifferentsustainability
aspects.TheProgrammecontainsindividualoptionsandspecialisms,andtheopportunity
toconductprojectsandthesesrelatedtotheoperations.TheProgrammeprovidesskills
forworkingwithplanningandevaluationoftourismandtourismrelatedoperations
withinprivateandpublicoperations.

ThefirstyearoftheProgrammeisstudiedtogetherwiththoseattendingtheMaster's
programmeintourismstudiesspecialisinginsustainability.Thefirsttermisstructuredto
gatherstudentswithdifferenteducationalbackgroundsandisthereforeinitiatedwith

tourismstudieswhicharelinkedtocurrentsubjecttheoryandresearch.Thereafterthe

ThefirstyearoftheProgrammeisstudiedtogetherwiththoseattendingtheMaster's
programmeintourismstudiesspecialisinginsustainability.Thefirsttermisstructuredto
gatherstudentswithdifferenteducationalbackgroundsandisthereforeinitiatedwith

tourismstudieswhicharelinkedtocurrentsubjecttheoryandresearch.Thereafterthe
Programmemovesontoaddressingtourismfromsocial,cultural,political,environmental,
economicandotheraspectsofsustainability.Thetermendswithanindividual
specialismwhichisadaptedbasedonindividualconditionsandneeds.Thesecondterm
developsskillsandapproacheswithinanalysis,planningandevaluationoftourismfroma
sustainabilityperspectiveandendswithoptionalcoursesof15credits,alternativelya
thesisonyourchosenspecializationwithintheareaofsustainabilityforthosewhoprefer
towritetwosmalltheses(15credits+15credits).Thethirdtermcomprisesoptional
coursesof30creditsandtherebypermitsanentiretermofstudiesabroad.

TheProgrammeisrelatedtooperationsandoffersstudentstheopportunitiesfor
qualifiedinvestigationtasksandinvestigationassignmentswhichareconductedinthe
formofprojectsandtheses.Collaborationwiththesurroundingcommunityis
institutionalisedbystakeholdersandpriviesbeingconnectedtotheProgramme.This
ensuresaninfluxofproposalsandprojectsrelatedtotheoperationsforinvestigations
andprojectswhichentailanalysing,planningandevaluatingtourismfromasustainability
perspective.

Studiesabroad
TheProgrammepermitsstudiesabroadonyourownforanentiresemester(term3).
Thesecanbeconductedwithintheframeworkoftheoverallrangeofagreementswith
foreignuniversitieswithinLinnaeusUniversityorbystudentsorganisingtheirstudiesat
aforeigninstituteofhighereducationinanothermanner.Theforeignstudiesare
plannedinconsultationbetweenstudentsandprogrammecoordinators.

Scopeoftheprogramme
TheProgramme'ssustainabilityspecialismalsocomprisesthebasisforworkwiththe
followingperspectivesintheProgramme.

foreignuniversitieswithinLinnaeusUniversityorbystudentsorganisingtheirstudiesat
aforeigninstituteofhighereducationinanothermanner.Theforeignstudiesare
plannedinconsultationbetweenstudentsandprogrammecoordinators.

Scopeoftheprogramme
TheProgramme'ssustainabilityspecialismalsocomprisesthebasisforworkwiththe
followingperspectivesintheProgramme.
Sustainabledevelopmentisconstantlyhighlightedintheanalysisandplanningof
sustainability.Moreover,politicalandscientificaspectsofsustainabledevelopmentinall
coursesareproblematized.
Genderisusedasafundamentalcategoryinthestudyoftourismsubjecttheoryand
gendertheoryisaddressedinrelationtotheoryofscienceandresearchmethodology.
Genderaspectsofsocial,economicandenvironmentalsustainabilityareincludedasan
integratedpartinallworkwhichinvolvesanalysingorplanningfortourism.
Diversityishighlightedthroughclassicsocialscienceconceptssuchasethnicity,gender,
class,culture,powerrelationsetc.andasapartoffundamentaltourismandtourist
theory.DuringtheProgrammestudentswillencounterarangeofdifferentperceptions
andtheoriesonbothscienceandsustainability,includingsustainabledevelopment.
InternationalisationisgivenapracticalbasisastheProgramme'slanguageof
instructionisEnglishandthroughadeliberateefforttorecruitinternationalstudentswith
degreesfromforeigninstitutesofhighereducation.Intermsoftheinternational
perspectiveoftheProgramme,itisdifficulttoavoidanAngloSaxontouchofthe
tourismstudies'literatureandresearch.Deliberateeffortswillbemadewithinthe
coursestobalanceEurocentric,westernandcolonialperspectives,somethingwhichalso
applieswhensustainabilityandsustainabledevelopmentareaddressed.

QualityDevelopment
Continuousevaluationandimprovementoftheprogrammetakesplace,e.g.,through
courseevaluationswhicharecompiledintowrittenreportsandreportedbacktothe
students.Studentsactivelyparticipateinthefollowupanddevelopmentofthe
programmethroughtheprogrammecouncil.Inadditiontocourseevaluations,thereisa
programmeevaluationattheendoftheprogramme,whichisalsoreportedbacktothe
students.Evaluationresultsareusedintheprogrammesqualitydevelopmentwork.
Programmecoordinatorsareresponsibleforevaluatingtherelevanceoftheprogramme
inconsultationwiththeindustryandsocietyatlarge.

DegreeCertificate
Aftercompletingprogrammestudies,correspondingtotherequirementsexpressedin
theHigherEducationOrdinancedegreeorderaswellasLinnaeusUniversitydegree
order,thestudentmayapplyforadegree.ThosewhohavecompletedTourismstudies
specializationinsustainability,MasterProgramme120credits,mayobtainthefollowing
degree:
