Esta pesquisa faz uma reflexão sobre o design vernacular na cultura urbana amazônica, especificamente em Belém do Pará. O foco da investigação partiu da seguinte questão-problema: como o design vernacular, na tradição popular tipográfica, persiste na cultura urbana belenense? O objeto de pesquisa é o lettering popular, com foco nos desenhos de letras pintados manualmente nas fachadas de pequenos comércios espalhados pela cidade de Belém, por se tratar de uma prática cultural e comunicativa fundamentada na tradição popular vernacular. Nesse sentido, a hipótese defendida neste TCC é a de que o design vernacular, a partir do trabalho dos letristas populares, está ativo nas periferias de Belém do Pará, sendo um elemento estratégico na comunicação e na cultura urbana local. A base teórica centrou-se no campo do design por meio dos autores Rafael Cardoso (2008), Fátima Finizola (2010) e Vera Lúcia Dones (2005); e no campo da cultura, identidade, cidadania e consumo Néstor García-Canclini (2008), Clifford Geertz (2008), Stuart Hall (2006), Gordon Mathews (2002), dentre outros. A metodologia teve como foco a análise qualitativo-descritiva. Para tanto foi realizada coleta de material que ocorreu durante dois meses – de setembro a novembro de 2014 – e envolveu o registro fotográfico das letras com conteúdos vernaculares, três entrevistas com os pintores de letras (Art Walter, Hélio Pintor e Siqueira), além de mais quatro entrevistas com consumidores deste tipo de design. Este estudo é importante por investigar o design vernacular enquanto parte da cultura e da identidade amazônica, resgatando os seus traços distintivos e a maneira como essa forma de comunicação popular ocorre na região Amazônica.
This research makes an observation about the vernacular design in the urban culture of the Brazilian Amazon region, specifically in Belém of Pará. The main focus of the investigation came from the following question: how does the vernacular design, at the typographic popular tradition, keeps occurring in Belém? The analyzed object in this research is the folk lettering, with emphasis on the hand drawing letters painted on the facade of small companies and walls widespread across the city, which is a cultural and communicational behavior based on the vernacular popular tradition. Accordingly, the hypothesis presented here pointed that the vernacular design, starting with the work of the letter painters, is active in the suburb of Belém and consists in a strategic element of the local communication and urban culture. The authors, whose studies were used for the theoretical basis of the design field, were Rafael Cardoso (2008), Fátima Finizola (2010) and Vera Lúcia Dones (2005); about the culture, identity, citizenship and consumption fields, this research used the concepts of Néstor García-Canclini (2008), Clifford Geertz (2008), Stuart Hall (2006) and Gordon Mathews (2002). The methodology was based on the qualitative descriptive analysis. The collection of the material for the analysis took place during two months – from September to November of 2014 – and involved the photographic log of the vernacular letters, three interviews with the letter painters (Art Walter, Hélio Pintor e Siqueira), besides four more interviews with the consumers of the popular design. This is an important study because investigates the vernacular design as part of the culture and identity of the Amazon, by rescuing its distinctive features and the way that this popular communication happens in the region.
