BEFORE PRACTICUM STATEMENT

INTRODUCTION
During the period from 1st February 2015 until 30th April 2015, I will be facing
the third and the last phase of practicum at Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Perdana, Alor
Setar, Kedah. During this period, I aim to take the opportunity to apply and practice
the methods, approaches and techniques that Ive learned to enhance my capability
in applying and using those things in order to produce the best teaching and learning
session for the pupils.
The main plan is to apply the methods, theories and techniques learned to
prepare the pupils with useful knowledge and techniques in learning and acquiring
the language. Suitable methods, approaches or techniques used in conducting the
lesson will enable the pupils to learn and acquire the language better during the
lesson thus enhancing their language skills.
Besides that, we are also required to do an action research regarding the
problems that we faced during teaching an ESL classroom. The action research will
help trainees who have difficulties in teaching methodology by developing a new
method to teach English in a fun and meaningful way.
Besides that, I will try to identify my own strengths and weaknesses in
managing and controlling the class in order to improve my teaching skills. This
process is important to ensure that my teaching is improved from time to time thus
acting as the platform for me to be prepared as a good and competent teacher in the
future.
Other than that, I expect myself to be able to adapt to the schools
environment. I would also like to establish solid and professional relationships with
the teachers and the schools staffs. I am also hoping to understand and get to know
about the culture and atmosphere of students and teachers in primary schools as an
early exposure for the upcoming future.
My hope is that I'll be able to gain some new and meaningful experience as
well as knowledge as much as possible to be applied in teaching for the future.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES


During the 2nd Practicum Phase, I am planning to produce teaching and learning
sessions which relates with the methods, theories and techniques learned to provide
the pupils with knowledge to improve their language proficiency level in all the basic
skills, which are listening and speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary and grammar.
Thus by the end of the second practicum phase, my objectives are to:

1. Guide pupils to listen and speak in correct form and manner of the language
in formal and informal situation.
2. Teach pupils how to read with correct pronunciation and understand the
meaning of simple text by being able to answer WH questions based on the
text.
3. Guide pupils to write simple, compound and complex sentences to enable
them to write short text or paragraph to convey information.
4. Increase the amount of vocabulary among the pupils to help them in
improving their language proficiency level.
5. Help pupils to enjoy and understand children literature to make them
appreciate the targeted language more.

STRATEGIES

In order to achieve the aims listed, several plans and implementation on activities will
be carried out by:

1. Using English Language as main communication language in managing the


classroom discipline and basic classroom management. Besides, using
English itself in delivering the teaching and learning content, to provide them
with structures and vocabulary to enable them to use it for listening and
speaking skills.
2. Selecting, adapting and preparing texts or materials which are contextualized
to the pupils and meet their proficiency levels in matter of structures,
vocabulary and font to make them easy to illustrate the meaning of the texts.
3. Establishing daily vocabulary made up of 1 or 2 words a day chosen from the
text to be used together with their meaning in their mother tongue which is
Malay Language.

WHILE PRACTICUM STATEMENT

After a few weeks I carried out my practicum at Sekolah Kebangsaan Paya, I


have learnt a few things about the environment of the school, the pupils, the culture,
and all other sorts of things. Every single day Im adapting with the school culture
and gained some useful knowledge on how to establish professional relationships
with the teachers and the schools staffs. I also have known about the culture and
atmosphere of the school and how it differs from my previous school.

While planning the lesson for the pupils, I need to consider their level of
language proficiency which is average but the pupils are mixed ability in that
particular class. Suitable methods, approaches or techniques need to be used in
developing the lesson to ensure the pupils learn and acquire the language according
to their level. Besides that, I also need to expand their vocabulary and basically
improve their grammar knowledge. Furthermore, I have also realized that if we plan
and organize early we could have some extra time to adjust or review the lesson and
predict the problems which might arise in carrying out the activity. Therefore, it is
very crucial to know how to manage and spend time wisely.
Besides finding my own signature in teaching style that is appropriate with the
pupils level of language proficiency, there are also several problems that arise and I
had to overcome during the practicum period. Other than having some problem in
developing a fun and meaningful learning environment and gaining attention from the
pupils, I often have to deal with misbehavior in the classroom, which makes me feels
somehow demotivated with my pupils behavior in the classroom. The problem is
bothering with my level of confidence in teaching but I have to take that as a
challenge. In addition, it also affects how I treated them a little bit while the teaching
and learning process but then again I have tried my best in providing them with equal
treatment.
My hope for the next few weeks before I end my practicum session in this
school is that I'll be able to improve myself and gain some useful experience as well
as knowledge as much as possible to be applied in teaching for the future.

POST PRACTICUM STATEMENT

During the period from 14 th July 2014 until 12 th September 2014, I have
completed the second phase of practicum at Sekolah Kebangsaan Paya, Beseri,
Perlis. During that period, I have learned various new knowledge and experiences to
be used as reference in the future. I also had the chance to apply few methods,
theories and techniques learned to prepare the pupils with useful knowledge in

learning and acquiring the language. Besides that, it is also to improve their English
Language proficiency level in using the basic skills in the target language.

Some of the objectives that I would say I achieved during this phase would be
in teaching pupils how to read with correct pronunciation and understand the
meaning of simple text by being able to answer WH questions based on the text. By
using simple questions, teachers would be able to know whether their pupils
understand the lesson or not. Besides that, there is also some increase in the
amount of vocabulary among the pupils. I was really happy when they could tell me
the meaning of words that they dont know before which I had taught them during the
class. By using songs and videos also helped me to let the pupils enjoy and
understand children literature better, thus making them appreciate the targeted
language more.

Other than that, I had identified some of my own strengths and weaknesses in
managing and controlling the class in order to improve my teaching skills. The
reflection process really helped me to ensure that my teaching is improved from time
to time and to be able to be prepared for the next lesson. Besides, I think I have also
improved in giving instructions compared to the previous practicum. Now, I know
how to communicate with students better and delivering the lesson in a proper way.

As for now, I have gained some confidence to be a good teacher but still there
are lots of room for improvement. I still have other weaknesses that sometimes I
myself could not even see. Therefore, I am looking forward for the next practicum
phase to mend myself to become a good teacher in the future, InsyaaAllah.
