Adidassantiunionanimusseemstohavenolimit.InJuly2012,over1,300workerswerefiredfromthePTPanarubDwi
Karya(PDK)facility,asubcontractedfactoryproducingforAdidasinJakarta,Indonesia.Similarfiringshavebeendocumented
atseveralfactories,includingPinehurstManufacturinginHonduras,TroonManufacturingandFlyingNeedleinNicaragua,
TextilesOpicoinElSalvador,andJoeAnneDominicanaintheDominicanRepublic,allofwhichproducedforthesports
apparelgiant.
Adidasblatantworkerrightsviolationshaveearnedthemareputationasoneofthethemostcallousbrandsintheworld.
ThisOctobertheInternationalUnionLeagueforBrandResponsibility,withalegionofworkersfromover10countries,helda
MonthofActionaspartoftheglobalmovementtoreshapethebusinesspracticesofcorporationssuchasAdidas.
Duringthismonthofaction,onOctober7,workersprotestedthefiringofthestrikingunionmembersatPTPanarubDwikarya
inJakarta,Indonesia.OvertheweekendonOctober19,workersatAdidascontractfactoriesinElSalvadorstagedaprotestat
thatcountrysonlyauthorizedAdidasdistributortopressurethebrandoverlaborviolationsworldwide.Additionally,inunion
leadersinBuenosAirescampaignedtoattainbetterconditionsforleatherworkersinAdidassuppliersinArgentina.Workers
andactivistsinIndia,Nicaragua,HongKongandtheUnitedKingdomareamongthosejoininginwiththeirownprotest
activitieslastmonth.
StudentsbecameawareoftheirinfluenceinthisissueafterhearingfromleadersoftheSitraprimunionaboutthegross
abusesatCentroTextil,aNicaraguanfactorywhichproducescollegelicensedapparelforAdidas.OnMay2and6ofthisyear,
15ofthe21foundingmembersoftheSitraprimunionintheCentroTextilfactoryinNicaraguawereunfairlyfiredin
retaliationforexercisingtheirlegalrighttoformaunion.TheunionhadjustassembledinfullforthefirsttimeonMay1,and
theirpromptfiringleavesnodoubtthattheywerethevictimsofAdidasviciousantiuniontactics.
ComingoffasuccessfultwoyearcampaigncampaigntogetBadidastopay$1.8millioninlegallymandatedseverancepay
inworkersatthePTKizonefactoryinIndonesia,studentswerereadytoconfrontBadidasonceagain.Insolidaritywiththe
League,studentsatuniversitiesthroughouttheU.S.,includingCornell,UWMadison,andNYU,joinedtheInternational
MonthofActionanddemandedtheiruniversitiespressureAdidastorehirethewrongfullyfiredworkers.OnOctober21st,
studentsandworkerssawatremendousvictorywhenAdidaswasforcedtorehire14ofthewrongfullyfiredworkers.

AccordonFireandBuildingSafetyinBangladesh.AdidassmoveoccurredhalfwaythroughanInternationalWeekofActionto
EndDeathtraps,duringwhichstudentsatover30universitiesacrossthecountryheldcampusactionsonthe6month
anniversaryoftheRanaPlazabuildingcollapsetodemandcollegelogobrandssigntheAccord.
Adidassannouncementalsocomesjustsixmonthsafterthecompanyagreedtopay$1.8millioninseverancepaytogarment

workersatthePTKizonefactoryinIndonesia,followingthelargestcollegiateboycottofatopthreesportswearbrandin
history,with17collegesanduniversitiesendingtheirAdidascontractsduringtheBadidascampaign.
NowthatAdidashassignedtheAccord,alleyesareonVFCorporation,Nike,TopoftheWorldandotherplayersinthe
collegiateapparelindustrywhohaveshirkedresponsibility.Withover100brandsandretailerssignedontotheAccord,these
brandsarerunningoutofexcuses.
Ouruniversitiesarelikewiserunningoutofexcusesforwhytheyhaventrequiredbrandstodotherightthing.Justlastweek,
theWorkerRightsConsortiumformallyrecommendedthatuniversitiesrequirebrandsproducingcollegiateapparelin
BangladeshtosigntheAccord.
Campaignsoncampusareheatingup.Forexample,hereatPennState,USASLocal123hasbuiltacoalitionof20student
groupsincludingprogressive,faith,Greek,andculturalorganizationswhowantPennStatetouseitspowerintheapparel
industrytoenddeathtrapfactories.Earlierthisweek,weheldavigilcallingonPennStateadministrationtoact.
AsUSATODAYreported,theEndDeathtrapscampaignisjustbeginning,andwontstopuntilouruniversitiesdotheright

Inhardfoughtvictory,studentsandworkershaveforcedGermansportsweargiantAdidastocompensate2,700former
IndonesiangarmentworkerswhoproducedcollegiateapparelatPTKizone,anAdidassupplierfactorythatcloseddownover
twoyearsago.Whilethecontentsoftheagreementremainconfidential,thePTKizoneworkerspressreleasestatedthat
theformerworkerswillreceiveasubstantialsumfromAdidasandthesettlementwillresolveapowerfulinternational
campaignoverAdidasspriorrefusaltopay$1.8millioninunpaidseverancepayfollowingtheclosureofPTKizone.
ThisagreementbuildsonthehistoricprecedentthatUSASactivistssetwithNikein2010whenthebrandwasforcedtopay
twomilliondollarsinlegallyowedseverancepayto1,800formerHondurangarmentworkers.
Foryears,workersintheglobalapparelindustryhaveroutinelybeenrobbedoftheirlegallymandatedseverancepaywhen
factoriesclose.Withtodaysannouncement,studentsandworkershaveestablishedanewnormintheglobalgarment
industry;thetwolargestsportswearbrandsintheworldhavebothacknowledgedthattheycannolongerwalkawaywhen

theircontractorsdepriveworkersofmoneytheyhavelegallyearned,saidLingranKong,astudentattheUniversityof
WisconsinMadison.
AdidassdecisiontocompensateitssubcontractedworkersforthefirsttimeinhistoryisavictoryoftheBadidascampaign
ledbyUnitedStudentsAgainstSweatshops.Aftertwocoasttocoastworkertoursandescalatingoncampusactionsacross
thecountry,thecampaignprovokedthelargestcollegiateboycottofatopthreesportswearcompanyinhistory,with17total
universitiesandcollegesendingtheircontractswithAdidas.
TheseschoolsincludeCornellUniversity,OberlinCollege,theUniversityofWashington,BrownUniversity,RutgersUniversity,
GeorgetownUniversity,theCollegeofWilliam&Mary,SantaClaraUniversity,PennStateUniversity,NortheasternUniversity,
theUniversityofMontana,theUniversityofMinnesotaTwinCities,Crookston,andMorris,OregonStateUniversity,Temple
University,andWashingtonStateUniversity.AlliesinEurope,includingPeople&Planet,CleanClothesCampaign,andWarOn
Wantalsolaunchedcampaigns,bringingincredibleinternationalpressuretobearonthecompany.
WhilethereiscertainlymoretobedonetocleanupviolationsofworkersrightsinAdidasssupplychain,USASisverypleased
thattheDPCunionandthePTKizoneworkerscoordinatingcommitteehavereachedanagreementwithAdidasthatwill
achievelongawaitedjusticeforthe2,700formerPTKizoneworkersandtheirfamilies.

Justice,weretakingtheBadidasCampaigndirectlytothesource,goingfacetofacewiththecorporationthatrobbedusof
$1.8millionwearerightfullyowed.
OurnamesareYudoSasmitoandAsmiatiWandoyo,andweusedtoworkatthePTKizonefactoryinIndonesia.Wearrivedin
theUSjustlastweek,andweretouringthecountrytoexpandthecollegiateboycottofAdidas.Butfirst,wewantedtostop

byheadquartersandgiveAdidasawarning:wewontstopuntilwewin.

petitionsignedbyhundredsofourcoworkersdemandingwhatwearerightfullyowed,butincredibly,Adidashaslocked
downtheirentireheadquarters,fencingoffthepropertyandpostingsecurityguards.Injustafewminutes,wellgoseeif
anyonewilltalktous.Letshopetheydoafterall,wecameallthewayfromIndonesiaforthis!

For11months,theBrownUniversityStudentLaborAlliancehascalledonouradministratorstorespecttherightsofthe
workerswhomakeouruniversityapparelbycuttingBrownscontractwithAdidasinresponsetoegregiousviolationsatthe
PTKizonefactoryinIndonesia.Adidashasrefusedtopayworkers$1.8millioninearnedandlegallyowedseverancepay,
whichisabouthalfayearssalaryfortheaverageworker.Thisisanunacceptableviolationofourcontract,andashameful
abuseoftherightsofworkersinourglobalcommunity.

California.Tomorrow,animportantUniversityofCaliforniacommitteeispoisedtovoteonthefateofAdidasintheUC
System,andPresidentMarkYudofneedstohearfromyou.
Overayearago,thePTKizonefactoryinIndonesia,anAdidassupplier,shutdownwithoutpayinglegallymandated
severancetoits2,800workers,leavingthemunemployedandunabletosupporttheirfamilies.Workersarestillowed$1.8
million,butAdidasrefusestopayasinglepenny.
ThisisnotthefirsttimeAdidashasrefusedtotakeresponsibilityforitsworkers.AnAdidasfacilityinElSalvadorclosedin
2005,leavingemployeeswithout$825,000legallyowedthem.InatleastfourmoreAdidassupplierfactoriessincethen,tens
ofthousandsofworkershavehadmillionsofdollarsinseverancestolenfromthem.
UCadministratorsaremeetingtomorrowtodecidewhetherornottocutAdidasscontract,includingamultimilliondollar
dealwithUCLA.Adidassbehaviorclearlyviolatestheethicalandlegalstandardswestandfor,andwewillnotsitidlybywhile

Today,welaunchthenextstageinthecampaigntocompelAdidastotakedirectresponsibilityforitssprawlingglobal
workforce.
Today,werefusetoacceptAdidasstwistedprotestationsthatitbearsnorealresponsibilityforitsfactories,evenasworkers
continuetoburnaliveinsimilarsubcontractedgarmentfactorydeathtrapsacrossBangladesh.
TodayinsolidaritywithAdidasworkersacrosstheglobeweannouncethelaunchoftheBadidasCampaignand
WorkerTour,andournewwebsite,Badidas.com.
Itsbeen22monthssincePTKizone,anAdidassubcontractorinIndonesia,shutdownwithoutpayinglegallymandated
severancetoits2,800workers.22monthsthatthose2,800workershavestruggledtomakeendsmeet,pullingtheirchildren
outofschoolandbeingpushedoutoftheirhomesasmorethantwothirdsofthemremainoutofwork.22monthsthat
Adidashasstubbornlyrefusedtopayasinglecentinseverance.
Nextweek,thousandsoffashionindustryglitteratiwilldescendonNewYorkCityforFashionWeekandAdidaswillbe

Aftermonthsoflegalwrangling,theDaneCountyCircuitCourtinWisconsinhasruledthattheunionrepresentingformer
AdidasgarmentworkershastherighttointerveneasathirdpartyintheongoinglawsuitbetweentheUniversityofWisconsin
andAdidas.TheUWfiledsuitagainstAdidaslastsummeroverthecompanysrefusaltopay$1.8millioninlegallyowed
severancepayto2,800formerworkersatPTKizone,ashutteredAdidassupplierfactoryinIndonesia.
AftertheworkersfiledtointerveneinSeptember,Adidasmaneuveredtotrytoblocktheeffort,butthejudgeruledagainst
thecompany,recognizingthatthePTKizoneworkersunionhastherighttointervenebecauseithasdifferinginterests,goals,
andstrategiesthantheuniversity.ThisdecisionwillallowtheworkerstopresenttheircasealongsidetheWisconsinAttorney
General,whorepresentstheUW.
UWMadisonhasan$11millionsponsorshipagreementthatgrantsexclusiverightstoAdidastooutfitUWathletes.Students,
alongwithcommunityalliesliketheSouthCentralFederationofLaborandtheInterfaithCoalitionforWorkerJusticehave
calledonUWMadisontoterminatethecontract.InNovemberof2011,UWMadisonsLaborLicensingPolicyCommittee
recommendedthatChancellorWardcuttieswithAdidas,andtheDaneCountyBoardofSupervisorspassedaresolutionthis
summersupportingtheeffort.
Sincethelawsuitwasfiled,CornellUniversity,OberlinCollege,theUniversityofWashington,RutgersUniversity,Georgetown
University,andtheCollegeofWilliam&MaryhaveallendedorpledgedtoendtheircontractswithAdidasoverthePTKizone
violations.ThedecisionbythecourttoallowtheworkersuniontojointhesuitbringsUWMadisononestepclosertojoining
thesesixuniversitiesintakingastandtodemandaccountabilityandfairlaborpracticesfromcompaniesproducingcollegiate
apparel.

BeginninginMarch2012,membersofUniversityofWashingtonUSASstartedacampaignagainstAdidasoverthebrands
refusaltopayIndonesiangarmentworkersatthePTKizonefactory$1.8millioninlegallyowedseverance.Ourdemandwas
thattheUWsevertieswiththebrandunlesstheyagreedtoremediatetheirlaborviolations.
WestartedourcampaignbyeducatingthecampusaboutAdidasthroughholdingateachin,followedupbythedeliveryofa
giantchecktothePresidentoftheUniversity.Thecheckwasfor$1.8milliondollarsandmadeouttoAdidas.Wedelivered
thischecktoPresidentMichaelYoungwiththehopethathewouldtakeactiontoensureAdidaspaidthismoneyowedto
theirworkers.
AfterwecontinuedtoholdsimilaractionsoncampustoputpressureonPresidentYoungtocutourcontractwithAdidas,
membersofUWUSASputGreggNebel,AdidasDirectorofSocialandEnvironmentalAffairs,inthehotseat,demandingthat
heleavealicensingcommitteemeetingabitearlierthanheintended.
AfterhearingstraightfromthebrandthattheyhadnointentiontopayseverancetothePTKizoneworkers,UWstudents
continuedcampaigningfullforce,urgingPresidentYoungtocutthecontract.Aftermoreactionstookplace,includingones
wherewedresseduplikezombiesandthrewonourPJsinthemiddleoftheafternoon,wehadanotherchancetospeakto
Mr.NebelattheannualmeetingoftheFairLaborAssociation(FLA),whichtookplaceonourcampus.Again,infrontofhis
fellowboardmembers,studentsconfrontedNebeldirectlyaboutAdidasrefusaltotakeanyresponsibilityforpayingthe
workersatPTKizone.
Lastweek,wereceivedwordfromPresidentYoungthathewouldbeendingourbusinessrelationshipwithAdidas,effective
immediately.WhatisespeciallysignificantaboutthisactionisthatPresidentYoungdidnotincludearemediationperiodthat
iscustomaryofcontractcuts.BecauseofourstrongcampaignandAdidasblatantrefusaltobeheldaccountable,President
YoungdecidedtotakeaharderstanceandsevertiesimmediatelywithAdidasmidwaythroughthecontract.
ThisvictoryalsocoincidedwithanothervictoryforAdidasworkersthisweek.InMay2012,workersatFlyingNeedle,aAdidas
supplierfactoryinNicaragua,formedauniontoexercisetheirlegalrighttobargainforanendtosweatshopconditionsin
theirfactory.Aftertheformationoftheunion,FlyingNeedlemanagementinitiatedanaggressiveantiunioncampaign,which
includedtheillegalfiringof17unionleaders.
Aftermanagementsinitialwaveof12antiuniondismissalsinMayandearlyJune,theunionfiledacomplaintwiththe
NicaraguanMinistryofLabor.Afterconductinganinvestigation,theMinistryofLabordeclaredthesefiringsillegalunder
NicaraguanlawonJune8th,statingthattheworkersmustbereinstated.
Inresponsetomilitantworkeractionandpressurefromstudents,thisweekFlyingNeedleagreedtoreinstatealltheelected
unionleaderswithfullbackpay!ThevictoryattheUW,aswellasotherUSAScampaignsacrossthecountry,offeredthe
supportthesebraveworkersneededinordertofightandwinagainstthisAdidassupplier.
Still,theeventsatFlyingNeedleillustratefundamentalflawsinAdidastreatmentofworkersinitssupplychain.Adidasclaims
toconsistentlymonitoritsfactoriestoensurecompliancewithlocallaborlaw,FlyingNeedledemonstratesthattheopposite
istrue.Forfivemonths,Adidasdidnothingtosecurethereinstatementoftheunjustlyfiredworkers,evenaftertheMinistry
ofLaborhaddirectedlocalmanagementtodoso.Itwasonlywhenworkersreachedoutdirectlytointernationallaborrights
organizationsandbuyersthatAdidasactedtoencouragetheirsuppliertoremediatetheviolations.
Moreover,FlyingNeedleisfarfromanisolatedcaseforAdidas.Unionleaderswerealsoillegallyfiredwhentheyformed
unionsatAdidassuppliersAugustaManufacturing(Nicaragua)inMarch2012andPinehurstManufacturing(Honduras)in
August2010.Adidashasfailedtoimplementanycomprehensivesolutionstostemthispatternofantiunionbehavior.
Nevertheless,thevictoriesatFlyingNeedleandtheUniversityofWashingtonareatruetestamenttothepowerofstudent
workersolidarity.FromeveryoneinUWUSAS,welookforwardtostandinginsolidaritywithothercampusestakingaction
