Summary Comments: (Please include comments on performance in relation to assessment criteria)

NFE 2156 Professional Development: Assignment 1b, 2014-2015

1.

Introduction
This assignment is intended to develop your report writing skills by writing a formal report
based on your laboratory Log Book record for a Protel Circuit Design and Simulation and
a practical laboratory exercise.
The report should be word processed and should also make use of tables in Word and
graphs to display results as appropriate.

2.

Assignment
Write a Formal Report that conforms to the standards described in the lectures 5 and 6
of this course.
The subject of the Formal Report is laboratory work on series and parallel
combinations of RLC circuits: RC, RL, series RLC and parallel RLC circuits.

In the Introduction section, the importance of studying these circuits should be

explained together with a specific set of objectives for the report.
The Theory section should outline the essential theory (not a detailed copy of
derivations from a text book) with reference made to the source text (eg textbook)
using the correct style.
In the Procedure section the method of
1. Protel RLC circuits design, and transient and frequency responses simulation.
2. Building the RLC circuits, and measuring the voltages in the circuits by means of
an oscilloscope. The procedures should be explained with the aid of suitable
diagrams.
The Results section should be based on graphs obtained in Protel simulation and
laboratory measurements. Tables should be used to summarise, say, a comparison
of theoretical, simulated and observed values. The theoretical results may be
obtained from calculations.
The Discussion section should appraise the accuracy of the results, and the
methods used to obtain them.
References should be used correctly throughout and the References section should
be organised as per the guidelines. Care must be taken to distinguish between a
reference list and a bibliography.
The report for NFE2156 will be marked as a communication exercise.
3.

Material to be submitted

4.

Allocation of marks
