THE ANNUNCIATION
The Feast of the Annunciation is a Feast of our Lord Jesus Christ, and of His All Pure
Ever Virgin Mother - the Mother of God (the Ever Blessed Theotokos) that
Commemorates the day when Christ became Incarnate in Her Womb.
It is a Feast of our Lady Theotokos because it refers to the person who aided in the
Conception and Incarnation of the Word and Son of God i.e. the All Holy
Virgin Mary.
St Mary (Theotokos) has great value and an important position in the Church,
precisely because She was the person whom all generations awaited, and She
gave human nature to the Word of God. Thus the person of the Theotokos is
associated closely with the Person of Christ.
Furthermore, the value of the All Pure Virgin Mary is not only due to Her Virtues,
but also due to the Fruit of Her Womb. For this reason, Theotokology is very
closely associated with Christology for when we speak of Christ we cannot
ignore Her who gave Him flesh, and when we speak of our Lady Theotokos,
we simultaneously refer to Christ, because from Him She draws Grace and
value.
This is clearly shown in the Holy Service of the Salutations, in which the Ever
Blessed Theotokos is hymned in combination with the fact that She is the
Mother of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ the All Pure and Most Holy
Mother of the Incarnated, Eternal Son of God: "Rejoice, for Thou art the
Throne of the King! Rejoice, for Thou bore Him Who bears all things!"
This connection of Christology and Theotokology is demonstrated in the Lives of
the Saints as well. A characteristic mark of Saints - who are the real members
of the Body of Christ the Church Triumphant - is that they Love the Holy
Virgin Mary. It is impossible for any Saint not to Love her.
The Annunciation of the Theotokos is the beginning of all the Great Feasts of our
Lord Jesus Christ.
In the Apolytikion (Dismissal Hymn) of the Feast we chant: "Today is the beginning
of our Salvation and the Revelation of the Mystery from the ages..."
The content of the Feast refers to the Archangel Gabriels visit to the Virgin Mary to
joyfully announce to Her that the time of the Incarnation of the Word of God
had come, and that She would be His Mother. (LUKE 1:26-56).

THE ANNUNCIA
TION
25 MARC
Consequently, the Theosis that is offered through the Incarnate Christ is not a
birth, but a Revelation of the Enhypostatic Illumination to those who are
worthy of this Divine Revelation.
The Good Announcement, the Holy Gospel, the Annunciation, is a correction of the
Events that occurred at the beginning of mankinds Creation - in the sensorial
Paradise of Eden where due to the first created woman, Eve, the Fall due to
Disobedience to God and its fatal consequences began.
Today, due to another Woman - the All Pure and Most Holy Virgin, our Lady
Theotokos, the Second Eve - all Good Things began.
Before, there was the sensorial Paradise, while now and forever is the Holy Church
of Christ. Before, there was Adam, now there is Christ the New Adam and
before, there was Eve, but now there is the Ever Blessed Virgin Mary Theotokos
the New Eve.
Before there was the wicked whispering of the evil one who tempted Eve into
Disobedience and Spiritual Death - but today we celebrate the Joyous
Greeting of the Holy Archangel of God to our Lady Theotokos, which leads all
mankind in humble Obedience to Eternal Salvation and the Blissful Blessing
of the Heavenly Kingdom and Eternal Life.
Our Loving and Benevolent God has provided everything necessary for us to
correct our Fall from Divine Grace. We can no longer blame our habitual and
wilful sins on the human condition, for God Himself has taught us His Divine
Truth and shown us the Path to His Eternal Kingdom of Love. We are infinitely
Blessed to have every opportunity throughout our lifespan to correct ourselves
through ceaseless Spiritual Struggles and Repentance-Confession, in order to
finally complete our Spiritual Journey and hopefully enjoy all the Divine
Goodness of Eternal Life.
The Archangel Gabriel addressed the Ever Blessed Virgin Mary as being "Full of
Grace:" "Rejoice, O Thou who art Full of Grace. The Lord is with Thee. Blessed
art Thou among women..." (LUKE 1:28-29).
Our Lady Theotokos is indeed "Full of Grace" and Ever Blessed" since God is
always with Her - not only due to Her Most Pure Motherhood but especially, as
Christ commented, due to always being so humbly Obedient to God.
The Ever Blessed Virgin Mary had already been filled with Divine Grace, and not
just on the day of the Annunciation. Having remained in the Holy of Holies of
the Temple, She reached the Holy of Holies of Spiritual Life, Theosis.
The courtyard of the reconstructed Temple in Jerusalem was destined for the
proselytes and the main Temple for the Priests, but the Holy of Holies was
destined for the High Priest, once a year yet as a three year old child the
Virgin Mary entered the Holy of Holies - a Sign that she had reached Theosis
even then and She continued to be the shining example of Spiritual
Perfection to other children and adults who had also been dedicated to Holy
Service at the Temple until they reached puberty.
Thus, the Virgin Mary had reached Theosis even before She received the Visitation
of the Holy Archangel.
While growing up in the Temple, She had used a special method of knowing God
and communing with God utter Stillness Hesychasm for She had
realised that no one can reach God with reasoning, with the senses, with
imagination or human glory, but rather only through the intellect the nous
or rather, only through Noetic Prayer.
Thus She deadened all the powers of the soul that came from the senses, and
through Noetic Prayer she activated the intellect. In this manner she reached
Illumination and Theosis. And for this reason she was granted the greatest
honour of all time - to become the Mother of our Lord and Saviour - to give her
flesh to Christ. She possessed the Virtues and the God-making Grace of God.
The Virgin Mary had the Fullness of Divine Grace, in comparison to others.

3.
Of course, Christ, as the Word of God, has the whole Fullness of Grace, but the
Virgin Mary received the Fullness of Grace from the Fullness of Grace of her
Son. For this reason, in relation to Christ she is lower, since - Christ had Divine
Grace by Nature, whereas the Virgin Mary received it through participation.
In relation to mankind, however, She is higher than us.
The Virgin Mary had the Fullness of Grace, from the Fullness of Grace of her Son,
prior to the Conception, during the Conception and after the Conception.
Prior to the Conception the Fullness of Grace was Perfect, during the
Conception it was more Perfect, and after the Conception it was very Perfect.
In this manner the Virgin Mary was a Virgin in body and a Virgin in soul. And this
physical Virginity of Hers is higher and more Perfect than the Virginity of the
souls of the Saints, which is achieved through the Energy of the All-holy Spirit.
No human is born without Ancestral Sin. The Fall of Adam and of Eve and the
consequences were inherited by the whole human race: "...all have sinned
and are deprived of the Glory of God." (ROMANS 3:23).
Sin is a deprivation of the Glory of God, and no one is delivered from it. So,
naturally, the Virgin Mary was also born with Ancestral sin but at the moment
when, through the Power of the Holy Spirit, the Divine Nature was united with
human nature in the Womb of the Virgin Mary, She first tasted Her complete
freedom from Ancestral Sin and its consequences.
At the Annunciation our Lady Theotokos reached a greater state than that in
which Adam and Eve were prior to the Fall -She was granted a foretaste of
the final destination of Creation and so, for Her, Pentecost did not have to
occur neither was it necessary for Her to be Baptised because that which the
Apostles experienced on the Day of Pentecost, when they became Members of
Christ's Body through the Holy Spirit, and that which happened to all of us
during the Holy Mystery of Baptism, occurred for the Ever Blessed Theotokos
on the day of Annunciation, when She was Delivered from Ancestral Sin - not in
the sense that She was delivered from guilt, but that She obtained Theosis
Spiritual Perfection - in Her soul and body, due to Her Union with Christ.
St John of Damascus believed that the Virgin Mary received from the Holy Spirit a
Cleansing Grace, as well as Divine Grace to receive and give Birth to the
Word of God as Man.
Her response to the Annunciation clearly showed Her profound Humility and
Obedience even when confronted by such a unique and extraordinary
occurrence that was beyond any human logic. She never hesitated, not even
for a moment, to fulfil the Divine Will of God because She had True Freedom
of her own will to accept His Will without question.
Having achieved Spiritual Perfection, our Lady Theotokos was compelled by Her
profound Love of God to obey His Will in all things and certainly all matters
concerning Christ.
The Ever Blessed Virgin Mary gave Birth to Christ as a human Being, but the Divine
Conception was of the Holy Spirit, which is confirmed by the words of
Archangel Gabriel to St Joseph the Betrothed the Righteous Guardian of the
Virgin and Christ: "Do not fear to take Mariam as your wife. For That which is
born in Her is of the Holy Spirit." (MATTHEW 1:20).
The Conception of Christ in the Womb of the Theotokos occurred in silence and
secrecy and not with noise or disturbance. No one - neither of the Angelic Hosts
nor of mankind - was able to understand these Great Things, which were
performed at that moment.
St David the Holy Psalmist and King prophesied: "May He be like rain that falls on
a fleece, like raindrops falling on the earth!" (PSALM 71:6).
The Divine Annunciation and Conception occurred as quietly and unobtrusively
as raindrops that fall softly without causing any noise or corruption.
Consequently, our Lady Theotokos remained Virgin before, during and after

the Birth of Christ, which is depicted on Her Holy Icon by three asterisks or stars
on Her shoulders and forehead.
The Union of the Divine with the human nature in the Hypostasis of the Word, in the
Womb of the Theotokos, comprises the direct Theosis of the human nature from the first instant when the Divine United with the human nature there is the
Theosis of the human nature.
Due to the Incarnation of Christ, the Virgin Mary is addressed as Theotokos,
since She truly bore God Incarnate - having Conceived Him by God the Holy
Spirit Who enables all things that are impossible for us to achieve in our own
weak, human state.
Christ is God-Man - perfect God and perfect Man - for His Divine and human
Natures acted "with the other in Communion" in the Hypostasis of the Word.
Human nature was immediately Deified and exalted by its Union with the
Divine Nature in the Hypostasis of the Word, in the Womb of the Theotokos.
However, the direct Theosis of human nature by the Divine Nature of the Word
does not mean that the qualities of human nature are abolished. This shows
that the Conception, the Gestation, and the Birth of Christ occurred both
naturally and Supernaturally - Supernaturally, because it occurred creatively
by the Life-Giving All Holy Spirit and not by seed - and naturally because the
Gestation of Christ occurred in the natural manner whereby an infant is
carried to term in the mothers womb.
The Annunciation of the Theotokos is the Divine Annunciation of our Eternal
Salvation, which began at the Conception or Incarnation of the Eternal Son
and Word of God.
Today, with deep, heartfelt Joy we celebrate the prelude of our Eternal
Salvation - the greatest Divine Announcement of our life!

WEAKER, DESTRUCTIVE, SELF-INDULGENT TEMPTATIONS THAT LEAD US TO SPIRITUAL DEATH AND EVENTUALLY, ETERNAL
