RING TOPOLOGY
A ring network is a network topology in which
each node connects to exactly two other nodes,
forming a single continuous pathway for signals
through each node - a ring.
Data travel from node to node, with each node
along the way handling every packet.

Alternatively referred to as a ring

Network, ring topology is a computer network
configuration where the devices are connected
to each other in a circular shape. Each packet is
sent around the ring until it reaches its final
destination. Today, the ring topology is seldom
used. Below is a visual example of a simple
computer setup on a network using a ring
topology.

PROCESS

Ring network topology is in a circular

pattern so that all the terminals receive data.
All the terminals have a data receiver to
get all the signals from the predecessor
computer and a data transmitter that ejects
all the signals out to the next neighboring
computer
The flow of the data depends on the
speed of the transmission.
Every node has a critical ring and every
node has a signal repeater so that the data
transmission remains strong.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

A ring can operate as a communication
network if it perform the following three
functions.
1. data insertion
2. data reception
3. data removal
1. These functions are mainly provided by
the repeaters.
2. each repeater also act as the device
attachment point. Hence the function of data
insertion is accomplished by the repeaters.
3. data is transmitted in the form of packets.
4. each packets consists of a destination
address field

Advantages of Ring Topology

1) This type of network topology is very
organized. Each node gets to send the data when
it receives an empty token. This helps to
reduces chances of collision. Also in ring
topology all the traffic flows in only one
direction at very high speed.
2) Even when the load on the network
increases, its performance is better than that
of Bus topology.
3) There is no need for network server to
control the connectivity between workstations.
4) Additional components do not affect the
performance of network.
5) Each computer has equal access to
resources.

Disadvantages of Ring Topology

1) Each packet of data must pass through
all the computers between source and
destination. This makes it slower than Star
topology.
2) If one workstation or port goes down,
the entire network gets affected.
3) Network is highly dependent on the wire
which connects different components.
4) MAUs and network cards are expensive
as compared to Ethernet cards and hubs.

CONCLUSION
Ring In a ring topology all of the nodes or
devices are connected to one another in a
circle. The data passes from one device to
the next one and all the way around the ring
layout until it reaches the destination node.
A major disadvantage is that if a single
device is switched off, the network does not
work.
