GENERAL INFORMATION

1.4 TOOL DESCRIPTION

1.4.1 Delta-T Logging
Historically, sonic logging has been only concerned with the compressional portion of the acoustic
wavetrain. Sonic logging tools were used primarily to determine a value for the formation
compressional velocity (Vp) and its inverse (1/Vp). This value is referred to as slowness. Another
term for slowness is delta-t (tp), which is call the interval transit time or simply transit time.
Slowness tp is a function of formation porosity, pore fluid slowness, and formation matrix
slowness.
Note
The subscript p denotes the primary (compressional) wave, and
the subscript s denotes the secondary (shear) wave.
To show how slowness is computed from a sonic tool that is centralized in the wellbore, refer to
Figure 1-1 and the following computations.

Figure 1-1: Example of How Slowness is Computed

Page 4

WIRELINE FOM
REV. DATE 10/03/96

SECTION 1
BCDT/M305-B
GENERAL INFORMATION

In the slowness computations, an in-gauge borehole (i.e., no washouts) is assumed. Locations A,

B, C, D, and E (in Figure 1-1) are the travel times (in microseconds). These locations are the
different times it takes the signal to cross the respective paths. The acoustic signal from the
transmitter (T) to receiver R1 has the total travel time of A, B, and C, while the acoustic signal from
T to receiver R2 has the total time of A, B, D, and E. The difference in two travel paths is computed
as follows:
(1-1)

t1 = T R1 = A + B + C

(1-2)

t2 = T R2 = A + B + D + E

(1-3)

t2 - t1 = (A + B + D + E) - (A + B + C)

Here t1 and t2 are the total travel times required for the signal leaving the transmitter (T) to reach the
the receiver R1 and R2, respectively. Since the hole is uniform, A, C, and E are equal. Thus, the
calculations can be made by
(1-4)

t2 - t1 = A + B + D + E - A - B - E

(1-5)

t2 - t1 = D

Dividing this travel time by the constant spacing between the pair of receivers gives the interval
transit time (slowness). To be consistent with most sources, the t for slowness is represented as
follows:
(1-6)

t =

t2 - t1
D
=
.
spacing spacing

Here, the subscript p is dropped with the understanding that t refers only to the compressional
slowness. The computation of t involves measuring the travel times t1 and t2. Figure 1-2 shows
how this is accomplished using a zero crossing threshold technique.1 From Figure 1-2, a
threshold (based on the noise observed prior to the signal arrival) and the first crossing after this
point is used for the measured travel time.
The t computed from Equation 1-6 is called the uncompensated t and corrections are made only
when E and C are equal. These conditions are true except in conditions where the tool tilts in the
borehole or where the well is experiencing a cave effect (or washout). Figure 1-3 shows an
illustration of the tool in both conditions.

This is the method used by the Full Wave Sonic Tool (FWST).

SECTION 1
BCDT/M305-B
GENERAL INFORMATION

Borehole compensation is accomplished in different ways. For the Short-Spaced Sonic Tool (i.e.,
with transmitter-to-first receiver distance less than 8 feet), borehole compensation can be
accomplished for both tool-tilt and cave-effect conditions by employing two transmitters, one
above and one below a receiver array. For the Long-Spaced Sonic Tool (i.e., sonic tool with the
transmitter-to-first receiver distance 8 feet or greater), a depth-delayed process can be used.
However, this depth-delayed process can only be used to compensate for a cave effect;
compensation for tool tilt cannot be provided. For the Borehole Compensated Sonic Tool (BCDT),
a three-foot offset (i.e., the spacing between the transmitter and the first receiver) employs two
transmitters and two receivers that can be used to compensate for tool tilt and cave effects. Figure
1-4 shows the arrangement and the spacing of the transmitters and the receivers. Figures 1-5 and 16 further illustrate how the BCDT transmitters/receivers arrangements compensate for the tool tilt
and cave effect, respectively. The derivations of the compensated results in terms of travel times
are shown to the left of the figures (Figures 1-5 and 1-6). Notice that in each case, the end result is
a formation t computed for the distance between the pair of receivers.
For the BCDT, t is actually computed from the measured travel time t1, t2, t3, and t4. In Figures 1-5
and 1-6, the compensated results in terms of these measured travel times are as follows:
tc = 2 [(A+B+D+E) - (A+B+C)] UPPER + [(A'+B'+D'+E') - (A'+B'+C')] LOWER
2

but
t3 = A+B+D+E, t1 = A+B+C, t4 = A'+B'+D'+E', t2 = A'+B'+C'
tC = { [(t3 - t1)] + [(t4 - t2)]}/2
tc = {[t3 + t4) - (t1 + t2)]/2}

The Long-Spaced Sonic Tools (FWST) must rely on a depth-delayed process to achieve real-time
compensation.

SECTION 1
BCDT/M305-B
GENERAL INFORMATION

1.5 FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

The BCDT consists of two major sections: the M305-B Instrument Section and the BCDT sonde.
Additionally, the tool must run with a DITS-telemetry sub (either the DSTU or the D2TS) and is
installed as the top sub in the toolstring.

1.5.1 Telemetry Sub

There are two types of telemetry subs that can be used with the BCDT. For details on the
telemetry subs, refer to publications 770.00727 and 770.00259, DITS 2 Telemetry Sub (D2TS)
Service Manual and DSTU/RTU Service Manual, respectively.

1.5.2 M305-B Instrument Section

The M305-B Instrument Section (3.76001) consists of three main subassemblies: the Electronic
Assembly (3.76002), the Power Supply Assembly (3.30051), and the Transmitter Assembly
(3.29968). Although the Transmitter Assembly is an integral part of the M305-B Instrument
Section, it is non-functional when operating in the BCDT tool configuration. Instead, the
transmitters in the BCDT sonde are used. Thus, the M305-B Transmitter Assembly is electrically
bypassed and the connection from the Electronic Assembly to the BCDT sonde is made via the
bottom of the Transmitter Assembly through a 37-pin DITS connection.
The basic function of the M305-B Instrument Section is to digitize the data received from the
BCDT sondes receivers and transmit the data uphole. The M305-B controls the acquisition cycle,
configures the tool for the different operating modes, and provides Auto Gain Control (AGC) and
signal filtering. For an in-depth discussion on the M305-B Instrument Section, refer to Section 2,
Theory of Operation, in the Full Wave Sonic Tool (FWST-B) Service Manual (770.00716).

1.5.3 BCDT Sonde

The BCDT sonde houses the transmitter and receiver transducers, the firing circuits for the
transmitters, some transducer control circuitry, and the preamplifier circuitry for the receivers. The
BCDT sonde section consists of three subsections: the Upper Electronic Section, the Isolator
Section, and the Lower Electronic Section. The BCDT Sonde was not designed to be disassembled
in sections for routine transport and should only be disassembled in the shop for maintenance and
repair.
Caution
Connecting the BCDT sonde section to any instrument other
then the M305-B Instrument Section, and applying power, will
damage the circuitry in the BCDT Upper Electronics Section.

Page 10

SECTION 1
BCDT/M305-B
GENERAL INFORMATION

1.5.3.1 Upper Electronics Section

As the name implies, the Upper Electronics section is located at the upper end of the BCDT sonde.
This section contains a 37-socket DITS connector at the top which is used to mate with the 37-pin
DITS connector at the bottom of the M305-B Instrument Section. The Upper Electronics section
contains the Transmitter/Receiver (T/R) Select board (which activates the correct transducer pair at
the right time), the Amplifier Board (which provides the logarithmic preamplification of the
received signals), and the circuitry used to fire the Upper Transmitter. Refer to Figure 1-7 for a
block diagram of the Upper Electronic section.

Transmitter/Receiver (T/R) Select Board

The T/R Select board (3.57008) replaces the Sonic Logic board (the IA2 in the BHC tool). The
T/R Select board has two functions (refer to the block diagram in Figure 1-7): it selects the
transducer pairs which must be active during each of the four firings of an acquisition cycle, and it
generates 5 volts for its circuitry and the Amplifier board. Refer to heading 2.3 in the BCDT
Service Manual (770.00453) for more details.

Figure 1-7: Upper Electronics Block Diagram

Page 11

SECTION 1
BCDT/M305-B
GENERAL INFORMATION

Amplifier Board
Refer to Figure 1-7 for the block diagram of the Amplifier board. The Amplifier board has one
channel and switches between the two receivers to provide linear and logarithmic amplification of
the signal. The logarithmic output is connected to channel 1 (R0) on the Input board in the M305
Instrument Section. The linear output is connected to channel 2 (R1) and is used to run the Cement
Bond Log (CBL) services. Refer to schematic drawing 707.00308 and board assembly drawing
707.00296 for a detailed circuit description of the Amplifier board.
The Amplifier board requires four supply voltages: 5 Vdc and 15 Vdc. The 15-volt supplies
are furnished by the M305-B Instrument and power all the op-amps on the board. The 5-volt
supplies are generated on the T/R Select Board and are used by the receiver switch.

Upper Transmitter Firing Circuit

The Upper (and the Lower) Firing circuits consist of chassis-mounted components that tie to the
+100-volt supply line and to the control signals from the T/R Select board. For details on the
transmitter firing circuits (including the schematic diagram), refer to heading 6.2.6 and Figure
6.9 in the G-Series BCDT Manual (770.00547).

1.5.3.2 Isolator Section

The Isolator section provides acoustic isolation between the transmitters and receivers by the
slotted housing, the rubber sleeves, and the cable suspension system for mounting the receivers.
When used, the Isolator prevents acoustic energy (energy emitted by the transmitter) from traveling
through the tool body and reaching the receivers before the formation arrivals.
The upper end of the Isolator section features a DB-25 connector and banana plugs for electrical
connection to the Upper Electronics section. The lower end of the Isolator section has a DB-15
connector and banana plugs for electrical connection to the Lower Electronics section. The Isolator
section consists of three subassemblies, the Upper and Lower Transmitter Sub Assemblies and the
Isolator (Receiver) Subassembly. Refer to Figure 1-8 for the Isolator section block diagram.
The Transmitter and Isolator subassemblies are all oil-filled. The oil pressure compensates the
interior of the tool against the hydrostatic pressure of the borehole fluid to prevent implosion. The
oil also serves to acoustically couple the transmitters and receivers to the borehole fluid. Any air in
the system will result in attenuation of the acoustic energy, causing poor signal transmission and
reception.

Page 12

SECTION 1
BCDT/M305-B
GENERAL INFORMATION

Figure 1-8: Isolator Block Diagram

The transmitters primary function is to convert electrical signals into acoustic energy. Each
Transmitter assembly (both the upper and lower) contains two cylindrical-shaped pieces of
magnetostrictive material with wire coiled axially around each one and connected in parallel.
When current passes through the wire, the magnetic field in the core of the cylinder is altered,
which in turn causes the cylinder to change size. When a current pulse is applied, the size change
of the transmitter sets up a compressional wave that radiates out through the oil surrounding the
transmitter, through the borehole fluid, and into the formation.
The receivers in the BCDT are also magnetostrictive devices. The function of these devices is to
receive acoustic-wave energy and convert it into an electrical signal, which operates just the
opposite of the magnetostrictive transmitters. The incoming acoustic (compression) wave acts on
the magnetostrictive core of the receiver by minutely changing the physical size of the core. These
small size changes in the core alter the magnetic field in the core, causing an electric current to be
induced in the coil of wire wrapped around the core. This current-induced signal represents the
acoustic signal in electrical form. The signal is then preamplified in the Upper Electronic section
and sent to the M305-B Instrument Section where the signal is further amplified, filtered, and
digitized before its transmission to the surface.

1.5.3.3 Lower Electronic Section

The Lower Electronic section is connected to the bottom of the sonde section and provides a 19-pin
DITS connector at its lower joint, for combinability with other DITS tools. The firing circuit for
the lower transmitter is identical to the upper transmitter firing circuit and is the only active circuit
in the Lower Electronic. The Lower Power Supply board is no longer used and is disconnected
when making the BCDT conversion. Further, the Sonic Filter board serves only as a terminal
board. In the BCDT conversion, the Sonic Filter board is rewired and all of its components are
removed.

2.1.1 Preparation
2.1.1.1 Preparing the Tool for Logging
1. Visually inspect the BCDT as follows:
A. Ensure all connectors are clean and dry. Also, check the connectors for bent pins and
cracked insulators.
B. Inspect all O-rings for cracks or nicks and ensure the O-rings are properly installed.
C. If the BCDT will be used as the bottom tool in the toolstring, make certain that the 19-pin
DITS Bull Plug is available and the Bull Plug is equipped with a 118-ohm termination
resistor. This bull plug will be installed at the bottom of the BCDT sonde. Do not use the
thread protector as a bull plug.
D. If another tool is to be run below the BCDT sonde, ensure that the bus-termination resistor
is 118 ohms. Refer OEB-94/009 for details.
2. Perform the PM-1 checks on each tool section that will be used in the BCDT toolstring.
Refer to Section 3, Maintenance, in this manual.
3. Assemble the toolstring. Refer to the BCDT tool specification diagram in Section 1 of this
manual, under heading 1.1.

Page 15

SECTION 2
BCDT/M305-B
OPERATIONS

4. Ensure the toolstring is centralized properly. Proper centralization is critical in recording

quality log data.
Note
The BCDT-A should be centralized in holes with diameters less than
12 inches, unless otherwise specified. In holes with diameters
larger than 12 inches, the tool should be decentralized and
standoffs should be used. When decentralizing the toolstring, use
1.5-inch to 2-inch standoffs.

2.1.1.2 Configuring the Logging System

1. Check the logging cable for leakage and continuity.
2. Ensure the logging system is set up as follows:
A. DIOC (Digital Input/ Output Chassis)
Panel switch is ON.
Real Time Clock Card is in slot 1.

7. Power up the toolstring by adjusting the W5 power (60 Hz) at the TPS so that 120Vac is
provided to the D2TS and M305-B Instrument Section. The TPS instrument null meter will
null when power to the toolstring is set properly. Additionally, the D2MP modem should
indicate that it is receiving uplink data.
Once power is set to the toolstring, press the <Esc> key or click on the green title bar with the
mouse to exit the Service Selection screen. Respond to the Save Service, Relay Chassis
On, and Tool String Powered Up questions.
8. Verify that the tool is operating properly and it is receiving data. When the service downloads,
the TDU will display (the display defaults to Ramps). Change the TDU from Ramp to Telem
(telemetry) so that the TIU displays the D2TS. The D2TS third word should display a 600 if
the toolstring is communicating without errors. Change the Tool from D2TS (the default) to
M305. The M305 RTU address should display 2100 if the M305 is operating properly.
Select the Acoustic option to leave the Telem TIU display and view Acoustic Waveforms.
9. After establishing communication with the tool, perform the M305BC quick command. This
command displays the M305B Command Status Display Table (Figure 2-1). The M305B
Command Status Display Table shows all the M305B configurable settings at one time. Notice
that the HEX values display the actual tool status and are decoded based on the logging service.
If ******* is displayed as the decoded value, this indicates that the received command status
was not understood. It further indicates that there is a communication problem between the
M305B Instrument and the CLASS software.
10. Perform the M305BT quick command. This command displays the M305B Tool Status
Status Display Table (Figure 2-2). The M305B Command Status Display provides additional
information on the firmware version, tool temperature (internal temperature), tip select, and
record length. This information is useful to ensure that the tool recognizes the receiver select
lines as the appropriate receiver in use (in this case, the BCS).

11. Verify that both transmitters are firing alternately by listening to the BCDT sonde with the tool
powered up.
12. Switch the tool to the Oscillator ON position, and display the four receivers on the TDU. The
oscillator signal is injected into the circuit after the differential preamp. If all circuits after the
preamp are operating properly, then the oscillator test signal will be displayed by all four
receivers.
13. Verify that the transmitters and the receiver circuits are operating properly. Place the BCDT
sonde in a metal semi-circular trough. Use the rubber hose segments to seal between the tool
housing and the trough, and fill the trough with water. All four receivers should display a good
signal on the TDU.

2.1.2 Shop Calibration

There is no shop calibration required for the BCDT.

2.1.3 Field Verifications

Verify that casing reads 57 sec/ft in free pipe, and that the tool switches the gain settings and the
oscillator properly.

2.2 TRANSPORTATION, HANDLING AND STORAGE

There are no special procedures for transporting the BCDT. However, general safety precautions
should be used when operating and handling the BCDTs.

2.2.1 Personal Safety

Avoid electrical shock hazards. Disconnect power from the equipment before performing
maintenance or making repairs.

Support the tool on dollies, sawhorses, work benches, or other suitable tool supports when
servicing. Ensure the tool is secured to the work surface to prevent it from rolling.

Use the proper lifting technique when handling the BCDTs.

2.2.2 Equipment Safety

Use extreme caution when lifting tools that contain the Isolator; otherwise, damage to the
BCDT Isolator may occur. The BCDT sonde should be lifted and lowered into the well
separately from all other tool sections to prevent damage to the Isolator.

Ensure that the tools in the toolstring that contain pressure-balance systems are properly
filled with oil and the oil is contaminant-free after every logging job. Both contaminated oil
and low oil levels can cause severe damage to the tool. Contaminated oil and low oil levels
significantly reduce the operating temperature and pressure limits of the tool.

Do not exceed the tools pressure, temperature, or electrical limits during operation.

2.3 WELLSITE OPERATIONS

2.3.1 Wellsite Preparation

Ensure that the tool power is off before assembling the toolstring. This will prevent electrical
shock and tool damage.

Use extreme care when lifting the tool. Always support BCDT sonde while lifting.
Furthermore, the BCDT sonde should be lifted separately from all other tool sections to prevent
damage to the slotted isolator.

Always set the tool within its specified operating power. When powering up the BCDT,
monitor the Instrument Null Meter on the TPS until the meter nulls. This ensures that the
toolstring is receiving the proper power (120 Vac, 60 Hz).

2.3.2 Logging
1. With the toolstring hanging vertically in the derrick, perform the following:
A. Ensure the logging system is configured properly. Refer to heading 2.1.1.2, Configuring
the Logging System.
B. Download the logging program into the logging system (refer to heading 2.1.1.3, Setting Up
the Logging Service). Select the BCS logging service at the Service Selection Table.
C. Power up the toolstring. Adjust the 60-Hz instrument power and monitor the null meter on
the TPS panel until the meter reads null. This ensures that power to the DSTU (or D2TS) is
set properly.
Select the Acoustic option to leave the Telem TIU display and view Acoustic Waveforms
3. Initiate the DO command for M305BC and M305BT to confirm that the tool is operating
properly. Refer to Subsection 2.1.1.3 and Figures 2-1 and 2-2 for a description of the M305BC
and M305BT tables.

4. Enter the BCS Tool Command Table. This table enables the operator to switch the internal test
oscillator on or off and allows the operator to select gain, filter, and time-interval settings. Use
the information below to help set up the commands in the BCDT Tool Command Table.

Operating parametersParameters for the BCS service are fixed for the sample interval
(at 4 sec) and for the filtering (at 7 kHz). Operating parameters that are selectable are the
gain control (Auto PS or Fixed gain), the fixed gain values (low, medium, or high) and the
test oscillator (on or off). These selectable parameters are chosen in the Tool Control
Menu.

Gain SelectionThere are two gain-selection modes: an auto-gain mode and a manualgain mode. The auto-gain mode is recommended for most applications. This mode seeks
the largest signal in the first 616 sec of the waveform (the near receiver window is
between 120 and 616 sec, and the far receiver window is between 200 and 948 sec),
and then it applies gain to the entire waveform accordingly. Gain can be added to the
signal using the Telemetry Display Unit (TDU) gain. Make sure that E1 is at or near
saturation to provide optimum results.
If the tool is centralized in a very large hole, E1 may occur after the 616-sec window. This
prevents the auto-gain circuit from properly applying gain to the signal; thus, a manual gain
mode may be required to achieve the proper gain setting. The BCDT short spacing (3 feet/5
feet) requires that the tool be decentralized in holes where the diameter is larger than 12-
inches so that borehole effects are minimized.

5. Set the polarity so that the first noticeable break in the waveform is in the negative direction,
and the first appreciable arrival (E1) is positive. Refer to the illustration in Figure 2-3 which
shows an example of the waveform polarity on the TDU. Add surface gain until E1 is at or
near saturation, then set the polarity so that E1 is positive. Changing the polarity while logging
should be avoided. It is best to select the polarity while going into the hole. If the polarity must
be changed, it can be done while relogging the data.
If the delay on the TDU is increased along the time scale, it must be monitored carefully to
prevent the pick from jumping back to noise. If a smaller diameter portion of the hole, or a
formation with a faster T is encountered while logging, E1 will arrive much earlier on the
time scale. All arrivals are ignored during the delay period, which means that an early E1
would also be ignored. Similarly, if a manual threshold level is selected in the parameter
table, the signal must be closely monitored to prevent loss of data. If the incoming signal
amplitude is below the threshold level, the pick will not occur on E1.
Several parameters, such as gain, delay, threshold, and polarity, can be accessed through the
TDU or the Flash Table. This capability is provided for relogging data. The TDU or the
Flash Table should be used while logging, and it is recommended not to use both
simultaneously. This may cause confusion, and it also may prevent the parameters from
updating properly when switching between the two.

6. Log an interval of casing to verify the tool is responding properly. Then stop the tool in casing
or record a strip in casing to verify that the tool reads 57 1 sec/ft in free pipe.
The maximum logging speed, when the BCDT is logged in combination with the gamma-ray
tool, is 34 ft/min. Keeping the logging speed within its maximum speed ensures that vertical
resolution is maintained with the firing rate of the tool. Consequently, exceeding this limitation
reduces the vertical resolution of the tool to a value of less than four samples per foot.
Caution
Reduce the logging speed before entering casing.
7. Monitor repeat section as per Log Quality Control (LQC) standards.

2.3.4 Operational Hints

Ensure that the tool is configured for the expected hole size. The tool should be centralized
in holes with diameters smaller than 12 inches and decentralized (using standoffs) in holes
with diameters larger than 12 inches.

The first break on the TDU waveform (E0), often referred to as forerunner, should be in the
negative direction. This yields a positive first appreciable arrival (E1). Refer to Figure 2-3.

The auto-gain mode should provide the best results in most logging environments. However,
it may be necessary to use the manual-gain mode when the tool is centralized in large
boreholes or where washouts occur.

Surface gain should be added with the TDU to provide adequate signal levels. E1 should be
at or near saturation to provide the best results. Noise levels up to the span of the acoustic
signal (20 to 25 counts) are acceptable. However, increasing the gain after E1 is saturated
will only increase noise level without enhancing the ability to obtain a T.

When using the manual-gain mode, it is best to prevent E1 from clipping or saturating
downhole. Surface gain can be used to increase E1 without changing the signal-to-noise
ratio. The signal must be monitored closely while logging. If excessive gain is used, the
noise level will approach the threshold when logging into an interval where E1 loses
amplitude.

If changes have been made to the delay or threshold, monitor the waveform carefully. If the
delay has been moved close to E1 to prevent the pick from jumping back to noise, the first
arrival will be excluded if an interval is encountered where E1 arrives earlier. This can occur
if a smaller diameter interval or if a formation with faster transit time is encountered.

If a manual-threshold level is selected and E1 amplitude falls below the threshold level, the
pick will not occur at E1, resulting in an inaccurate T. Low amplitudes can be expected in
unconsolidated formations or in washouts.

It is recommended that the Flash Table settings not be used to change TDU Parameters while
logging. The TDU should be used to implement changes in the acoustic settings. Using both
the Flash Table and the TDU can cause confusion about which parameters are currently being
processed.

2.3.5 Post Job

Rig down the toolstring the same way it was rigged up, being sure to lay the BCDT sonde and
instrument down in separate pieces.

When the tool is removed from the well, be sure to wash the transmitter and its pressure
balance bellows thoroughly. Also, wash the BCDT sonde. The rigid isolator sonde should
be flushed after every job to prevent borehole fluids from drying up and blocking passages.
