Happiness in Bibile:

1 Timothy 6:3-5
3If anyone teaches otherwise and does not agree to the sound instruction of our
Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, 4they are conceited and understand
nothing. They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words
that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions 5and constant friction
between people of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think
that godliness is a means to financial gain.
So what it says about the source of unhappiness here?
Conceited (Proud/Egoistic) people who do not have God's truth.

1 Timothy 6:6-10
6But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7For we brought nothing into the
world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8But if we have food and clothing, we will
be content with that. 9Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and
into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.
10For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money,
have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
How to avoid grief?
Godliness with contentment. It also says that a desire for money is a dangerous path
that can easily plunge us into ruin and destruction.

Psalms 133:1
A song of ascents. Of David.
1How good and pleasant it is
when Gods people live together in unity!
Since money doesn't seem to be the path to happiness, this verse suggest that one
source of happiness among those who follow God is Unity!

Romans 15:13-14
13May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you
may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Paul the Minister to the Gentiles

14I myself am convinced, my brothers and sisters, that you yourselves are full of
goodness, filled with knowledge and competent to instruct one another.
What does the Holy Spirit play in our happiness?
The Holy Spirit fills us with hope - and hope gives us joy and peace.
But what are we hoping for? (The entire chapter speaks of hope. But, this specific
text says that we are trusting in God. The logical conclusion is that if things are not
well, we are hoping that things will get better in our life. If things are going well, we
trust in God for the future. The Holy Spirit gives us the power to have that kind of
hope. And hope fills us with joy and peace.)

Galatians 5:22-25
22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, 23gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
24Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and
desires. 25Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
What is the source of happiness?
Having the Holy Spirit in our lives.
Words that connect with happiness: love, joy, peace, forbearance (patience),
kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

Philippians 4:4-7
4Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5Let your gentleness be
evident to all. The Lord is near. 6Do not be anxious about anything, but in every
situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
7And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts
and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Trusting God. We present our prayers and petitions to Him, and if we trust Him,
peace will enter our hearts. "Transcends all understanding" means God can do the
impossible. We just need to trust in Him)
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
16Rejoice always, 17pray continually, 18give thanks in all circumstances; for this is
Gods will for you in Christ Jesus.
Be grateful to God. Be in contact with God through prayer. If you're constantly
thanking God for His blessings to you, it lifts your spirit.

Luke 12:15
15Then he said to them, Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life
does not consist in an abundance of possessions.
This text says that the true source of happiness is a relationship with God. Life does
not consist of what we own. A Spirit-filled life is the path to joy.

Difference between Joy & Happiness in Bible?

Ques%on: "Is there a dierence between joy and happiness?"

Answer: A dic&onary deni&on of happiness is a state of well-being, a pleasurable or
sa&sfying experience. The deni&on of the word rejoice, from which our word
joy comes, is to feel great delight, to welcome or to be glad. Depending on the
transla&on, the Bible uses the words happy and happiness about 30 &mes, while
joy and rejoice appear over 300 &mes. If we look at some verses it will help us
understand why joy is dierent from happiness.
Genesis 30:1-13 tells the story of two sisters, Rachel and Leah, and their rivalry over
their husband, Jacob. Each woman tries to have more male children in order to
please him, even using their handmaidens to conceive more ospring. Leahs
handmaiden, Zilpah, bore Jacob a second son, and verse 13 says, Then Leah said,
Happy am I! For women have called me happy. So she named him Asher. Thus the
word "happy" comes from the Hebrew root word ashar and means "to set right or be
blessed." We also nd the word "happiness" in Deuteronomy 24:5, which says,
When a man takes a new wife, he shall not go out with the army nor be charged
with any duty; he shall be free at home one year and shall give happiness to his wife
whom he has taken.

The word joy comes from the Greek root word chara and means "to be exceedingly
glad." James 1:2 says, Consider it all joy, my brothers, when you encounter various
trials. How could we ever consider going through dicul&es and trials a reason to
feel joy? James 1:3-4 gives us a clue when it says, Knowing that the tes&ng of our
faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, that you may be
perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. The deep, abiding joy comes as we
persevere through trials, with Gods help, and our faith matures and is strengthened.
So happiness tends to be ee&ng and depends upon temporal factors like
circumstances or other people.
Joy, on the other hand, is true contentment that comes from internal factors like our
faith in the Lord. True joy is everlas&ng and not dependent upon circumstances. The
book of Philippians is a great study in the dierence between joy and happiness.
Wricen by the Apostle Paul while imprisoned in Rome, this book uses the words
joy, rejoice, and joyful 16 &mes and teaches us how to have true contentment
in Jesus Christ, despite our circumstances. In chains and aware that his life was
coming to an end, Paul talks about his faith and trust in Christ and how it had
changed his whole perspec&ve on suering.
In Philippians 1:12-24, Paul says that because of his two-year imprisonment (Acts
28:30), the whole Roman guard heard the gospel from him, and it had even spread
throughout all of Rome. In verse 18 Paul says, What then? Only that in every way,
whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed; and in this I rejoice, yes, and I
will rejoice. Paul goes on to encourage others to have peace knowing that God
strengthens us (Philippians 4:13) and supplies all our needs according to His riches in
glory in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19).
So the Bible teaches that happiness is ee&ng because it ojen depends on things
outside of ourselves, but true joy is eternal because it is based on our rela&onship
with Jesus Christ, which is itself an everlas&ng source of joy.
