playsavitalpartinthemakeupofthemind.Foodhasbeenclassifiedinto3categories:good
(sattvic),passionate(rajasic)andignorant(tamasic),basedonwhetheritinducesgood(sattvic),
passionate(rajasic)orignorant(tamasic)statesofmind.
1. Gooddiet(alsoknownassattvicdietinyoga):milk,cream,cheese,butter,curd,ghee,
fruits,figs,vegetables,cerealslikewheat,rice,barley,etc.,peas,sugarcandy,gram,
pulse,ginger,myrobalan,lemon,honey.
2. Passionatediet(alsoknownasrajasicdietinyoga):fish,eggs,meat,salt,chillies,
chutney,asafetida,pickles,tamarind,mustard,sourthings,hot,pungentthings,tea,
coffee,cocoa,ovaltine,whitesugar,carrots,turnips,spices.
3. Ignorantdiet(alsoknownastamasicdiet):garlic,tobacco,rottenthings,stalethings,
uncleanthings,twicecookedthings,allintoxicants,allliquors,alldrugs.
Gooddiet(sattvicdiet)calmsthemind.Passionatediet(rajasicdiet)excitesthemind.Ignorant
diet(tamasicdiet)makestheminddullandlethargic.Markthedifferenceinnaturebetweenatiger

mind.Oneshouldtryonesbesttoeatgooddiet(sattvicdiet)only.Also,evengooddiet(sattvic
diet)becomespassionatediet(rajasicdiet)ifitiseatentooquickly,withoutchewingit
properly.Andevengoodandpassionatediets(sattvicandrajasicdiets)becomeignorant
diets(tamasicdiet)iftheyaretakeninexcessquantity.
Balancemaleandfemaleenergiesinordertoawakensushumnachannelandhavea
natural,blissfulstateofbrahmacharya.Aquestionarisesinthemindofeveryonewhycelibacy
issuchabigchallenge(atleastinthefirst12years).Thetruthisthatsexualenergyisreally
overpowering.Itneedsanoutlet.Mostpeoplefindoutanexternaloutlet,butthatdoesmoreharm
thangoodbydissipatingthephysicalandmentalstrength,apartfromloweringones
consciousnesslevel.Theproblemisifonedoesnotgiveanexternaloutlettosexualenergy,it

Whenidachannelisdominant,ourrightbrain(whichhasfacultiesofcreative

predominantlyinourleftnostril.
Whenpingalachannelisdominant,ourleftbrain(whichhasfacultiesoflogic,analysis,
detailsorientedthinking)ismoreactiveandthebreathflowspredominantlyinourright
nostril.
Whensushumnachannelisactive,bothourleftandrightbrainsactsimultaneously
andthebreathflowsevenlyinbothleftandrightnostrils.Thisisthetimeofthe
highestcreativity.Mostcreativeideasdawninthemindasflashesofintuitionwhen
sushumnachannelisactive.Thisisthetimewhenmindfeelsnaturalstateofpeace
andrestwhilebeingfullyaware.Thisisthemomentwhenitissoeasytopractise
concentrationandthoughtlessawarenessmeditation.Thisisthestateinwhich
kundalinienergyautomaticallystartsascendingupthespinethismovementleadsto
averydeepandabidingexperienceofjoy.
Theextraenergythatacelibatehasneedsaninternaloutletthroughsushumnachannel.So,
unlesssushumnachannelismadeopenproperlybybalancingmaleandfemaleenergies,the
celibacyiswellnighimpossibletopractise.Completeopeningofsushumnachanneltakesat
least12yearsofspiritualefforts.Thekeytechniquesforopeningupsushumnaare:
practisingnadishodhanapranayama,thoughtlessawarenessmeditation(orothertypesof
meditation),wakingupduringbrahmamuhurthatopractiseyogaandothercreative
activitiesandpractisingmahabandha.But,alltechniquesdescribedinthispostareimportant
tosaveusfromdownfallbycleaningthemindofalllustfulsanskaratilloursushumnachannelis
completelyactive.Oh!Whatajoyonefeelswhenpranamovesupwardinsushumna!Then,one
realizeswhatafoolishnessitistofritterourvitalenergiesinenervatingandfleetingpleasures
whenonehasthechoicetogetadeep,continuousjoybyopeningsushumnachannelandmaking
vitalenergiesriseupthesushumnachannel.Alltheattractionforoppositegenderexistsbecause
maleandfemaleenergiesarenotbalancedwithinandthesushumnachannelisclosed.Once

Brahmacharyapracticedealingwithbaddays
Baddaysmeansthedayswhenlusttroublesaresointensethatdespiteapplyingallournormal
yogatechniques,thecurrentoflustcontinuesforhoursandnotjustforsecondsandminutes.Bad
daysarethemostdangerousdayswhenmanyaspirantsbecomesodesperatethattheymay
experienceactualbreakincelibacy.But,fortunatelythereisaveryfoolprooftechniqueofgiving
upnext12mealstodealwithsuchbaddays.Pleasereadfulldetailsonthishere.This

initselfanontrivialtaskandweshouldnottrytostopthemindfromenjoyingeven

practice.

Thisisoneoftheissuesonwhichagoodguidanceisneeded.Seriousbrahmacharyabreakis
breakofphysicalcelibacyorbreakofvisualcelibacy.Inordertobouncebackfromsuchserious
brahmacharyafailureinawaysuchthatunbrokenbrahmacharyapracticeisensuredfromnowon,
pleaseunderstandandpractisethefollowinginstructions:
1. Donotbreakphysicalcelibacyevenifvisualandmentalcelibacygetscompletely
brokenduetoslips.Thisispossiblebyastrongapplicationofwillpowerandself
dialoguethatifyouendupbreakingevenphysicalcelibacy,thenwhatisleftofyour
celibacyeffortsofthepastliterallynothingfromspiritualperspectiveoreven
intellectualperspectiveifyouarechasing12yearscontinuouscelibacypracticefor
developinggoodintellectualpowers.Ifyoucansaveevenyourphysicalcelibacy
despitegettingexposedtowrongvisualorphysicalenvironment,itwillstrengthenyourwill
alotforlifelongcelibacypractice.Wegrowthroughstages.Savingphysicalcelibacyisthe
firststepsavingvisualandmentalcelibacyarelaterstages.Firstperfectphysical

everyone,exceptthosewhoarealreadybornalmostSelfRealized,ispronetobreakin
brahmacharyapracticeduringthefirst12yearsofbrahmacharyapractice?Onehasto
applylotsofmindforvisualandphysicalenviromentalcontrolandlearnfromthe
successfulexampleofothers.Hereisthelistofsuggestions(pleasereadsectionBalance
maleandfemaleenergiesinordertoawakensushumnachannelandhaveanatural,
blissfulstateofbrahmacharya.abovetounderstandwhycontinuouslydoingnadi

thistechnique.Youneedtodoonlynadishodhanabasicstagewithoutinvolvingany
internalorexternalretentionasbreathretentioncannotandshouldnotbedonefortoolong
timelike30minormoreandalsobecausewithbasicstage,youarefullyfreetodosome
selfstudyalsoincaseyouwanttodo.):
1. Ifthebreakinbrahmacharyawastriggeredduetointentionallyseeinga
particularmemberofoppositegender,thenhaveavowifIdothismistake,I
willgiveupnextmealand/orcontinuouslydominimum30minnadishodhana
pranayamaandfollowthisvowtodayfortodaysbrahmacharyabreak.Additional
note:Ifthebreakisnotmerelyvisual,butalsophysical,inthatcaseratherthan30
min,continuouslydominimum60minnadishodhanapranayama.Ifthatmemberof
oppositegenderisnonebutyourspouse,pleasetrytoavoidmeetinghim/her
aloneandinprivateplacemeethim/herintheopenplaceforanytalkand
notinthebedroomandtrytomeetwhenatleastsomeoneelse(yourkids,
parentsoranyotherperson)canwatchbothofyou.Thisisexactlythemethod
whichMahatmaGandhiusedwholelifewhenherealizedthathewasgetting
repeatedbrahmacharyafailuresduetoprivatemeetingswithhisspouse.And
thereiseveryreasonforallhouseholderyogistousethisruleinatleastfirst
12yearsofbrahmacharyapractice.

romantic/adultpicturesormoviesorreadingromantic/adultmaterials,then

amountoftimespentinseeingromatic/adultpictures/moviesorreading
romantic/adultmaterialsincontinuouslydoingnadishodhanapranayamaand
followthisvowtodayfortodaysbrahmacharyabreak.So,ifyouspent1hrin
seeingromantic/adultpictures/moviesorreadingromantic/adultmaterials,spend1
hrcontinuouslyindoingnadishodhanapranayama.Additionalnote:Ifthebreakis
notmerelyvisual,butalsophysical,inthatcaseratherthansameamount,invest
twicetheamountoftime,whichyouspentinlustfulactivities,incontinuously
doingnadishodhanapranayama.Also,useagoodinternetfilterifyouhavebeena
