Guide to SATA Hard Disks Installation

1.1 Serial ATA (SATA) Hard Disks Installation
This motherboard adopts nVidia nForce3 chipset that supports
Serial ATA (SATA) hard disks with RAID functions, including RAID
0, RAID 1, and JBOD. You may install SATA hard disks on this
motherboard for internal storage devices. For SATA installation
guide, please refer to Serial ATA (SATA) Hard Disks Installation of
U ser Manual in the support CD. This section will guide you how
to create RAID on SATA ports.

1.2 Making a SATA Driver Diskette

If you just want to install Windows 2000, Windows XP or
Windows XP 64-bit on your SATA HDDs without RAID functions,
there is no need to make a SATA driver diskette. However, if you
want to install Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows XP 64bit on your SATA HDDs with RAID functions, you will need to
make an SATA driver diskette before you start the OS installation.
STEP 1: Insert the Support CD into your optical drive to boot your
system. (Do NOT insert any floppy diskette into the
floppy drive at this moment!)
STEP 2: During POST at the beginning of system boot-up, press
<F11> key, and then a window for boot devices
selection appears. Please select CD-ROM as the boot
device.
STEP 3: When you see the message on the screen, D o you
want to generate Serial ATA driver diskette [YN]?,
press <Y>.
STEP 4: Then you will see these messages,
Please insert a diskette into the floppy drive.
WARNING! Formatting the floppy diskette will
lose ALL data in it!
Start to format and copy files [YN]?
Please insert a floppy diskette into the floppy drive, and
press <Y>.
STEP 5: The system will start to format the floppy diskette and
copy SATA drivers into the floppy diskette.
Once you have the SATA driver diskette ready, you may start to
install Windows 2000 / Windows XP / Windows XP 64-bit on your
system directly without setting the RAID configuration on your
system, or you may start to use RAID BIOS Setting Utility in the
section 2.3 to set RAID 0 / RAID 1 / JBOD configuration before you
install the OS. You may also set the RAID configuration by using
RAID Utility for Windows in Windows environment. Please refer
to the document in the Support CD, Guide to RAID Utility for
Windows, which is located in the folder at the following path:
.. \ RAID Utility for Windows

2.

Guide to RAID Configurations

2.1 Introduction of RAID
This motherboard adopts nVidia nForce3 chipset that integrates
RAID controller supporting RAID 0 / RAID 1 / JBOD function with
two independent Serial ATA (SATA) channels. This section will
introduce the basic knowledge of RAID, and the guide to
configure RAID 0, RAID 1, and JBOD settings.

RAID
The term RAID stands for Redundant Array of Independent
Disks, which is a method combining two or more hard disk drives
into one logical unit. For optimal performance, please install
identical drives of the same model and capacity when creating a
RAID set.

RAID 0 (Data Striping)

RAID 0 is called data striping that optimizes two identical hard disk
drives to read and write data in parallel, interleaved stacks. It will
improve data access and storage since it will double the data
transfer rate of a single disk alone while the two hard disks
perform the same work as a single drive but at a sustained data
transfer rate.
WARNING!!
Although RAID 0 function can improve the access performance, it
does not provide any fault tolerance. Hot-Plug any HDDs of the
RAID 0 Disk will cause data damage or data loss.

RAID 1 (Data Mirroring)

RAID 1 is called data mirroring that copies and maintains an
identical image of data from one drive to a second drive. It
provides data protection and increases fault tolerance to the
entire system since the disk array management software will
direct all applications to the surviving drive as it contains a
complete copy of the data in the other drive if one drive fails.

JBOD (Spanning)
A spanning disk array is equal to the sum of all drives. Spanning
stores data onto a drive until it is full then proceeds to store files
onto the next drive in the array. When any member disk fails, it
will affect the entire array. JBOD is not really a RAID, and it does
not support fault tolerance.

2.2 RAID Configurations Precautions

1.

2.

3.

Please use two new drives if you are creating a RAID 0

(striping) array for performance. It is recommended to
use two SATA drives of the same size. If you use two
drives of different sizes, the smaller capacity hard disk
will be the base storage size for each drive. For
example, if one hard disk has an 80GB storage capacity
and the other hard disk has 60GB, the maximum storage
capacity for the 80GB-drive becomes 60GB, and the
total storage capacity for this RAID 0 set is 120GB.
You may use two new drives, or use an existing drive
and a new drive to create a RAID 1 (mirroring) array for
data protection (the new drive must be of the same size
or larger than the existing drive). If you use two drives
of different sizes, the smaller capacity hard disk will be
the base storage size. For example, if one hard disk has
an 80GB storage capacity and the other hard disk has
60GB, the maximum storage capacity for the RAID 1 set
is 60GB.
Please verify the status of your hard disks before you
set up your new RAID array.

WARNING!!
Please backup your data first before you create RAID functions.
In the process you create RAID, the system will ask if you want to Clear
Disk Data or not. It is recommended to select Yes, and then your future
data building will operate under a clean environment.

Depending on the platform used, the system can have one or more
channels. In a typical system there is usually one adapter and multiple
channels, and each channel has a slave and a master. The adapter /
channel / master / slave status of each hard disk is given in the Loc
(location) columns of the Free Disks and Array Disks lists. For
example:

RAID Utility for Windows

1. Enter NVRAIDMAN
RAID driver is built in nVidia ALL in one driver provided in our support
CD. After you finish the driver installation, you can create, delete, or
rebuild any RAID array. Please enter NVRAIDMAN by clicking on Start
Programs

NVIDIA Corporation

Mediashield

(There is also a Mediashield shortcut on the desktop.)

Then, the below screen appears.

Mediashield.

2. Creating RAID Arrays

Creating RAID 0 (Striping)
NVRAIDMAN can be used to create a striped array from one disk up to
the maximum supported number of disks in the system. To create a twodisk Striped Array do the following.
1. Go to the system BIOS and make sure that the drives that you want to
use are RAID enabled.
2. Boot to Windows and launch the NVRAIDMAN application.
3. Create Array and the following screen will appear.

4. Click Next and the following screen shot will appear.

5. Click the RAID Mode list arrow and select Striping, and leave the
Stripe Size with its default value as shown in the following screen shot.

6. Click Next, and the following screen shot will appear.

7. Select the two disks that you want to include in the stripe set.

To create a striped array with more disks, select additional disks from the
list.

8. Click Next and the following screen shot will appear.

9. Click Finish and the following screen shot will appear.

The RAID 0 is created successfully.

Creating RAID 1 (Mirroring)

The NVRAIDMAN application can be used to create a Mirror Array. By
denition, a mirrored array consists of two drives. Data is written to both
two drives, and if one drive fails then data can be recovered from the
other drive. To create a Mirrored Array, do the following.
1. Go to the system BIOS and make sure that the drives that you want to
use are RAID enabled.
2. Boot to Windows and launch the NVRAIDMAN application, then click
on Create Array and the following screen will appear.

6. Click Next and the following screen shot will appear.

7. If you want to start rebuilding the array right away (copy data from one
disk to the other), select the disk that you wish to preserve. Do not
select a disk if you do not want to rebuild the array at this time.
8. Click Next and the following screen shot appears.

9. Click Finish. If you selected a disk to preserve in step 7, the rebuilding

process begins.

A mirrored array has been created, while the other two disks are set to
free disks.

Creating JBOD (Spanning)

NVRAIDMAN can be used to create a Spanning Array which requires at
least one disk to start such an array. To create a Spanning Array do the
following:
1. Go to the system BIOS and make sure that the drives that you want to
use are RAID enabled.
2. Boot to Windows and launch the NVRAIDMAN application, then click
on Create Array and the following screen will appear.

3. Click Next and the following screen will appear.

10

4. Click the RAID Mode list arrow and select Spanning while leaving the
Stripe Size set to its default value as shown in the following screen
shot.

5. Click Next and the following screen shot will appear.

11

6. Select the two drives that you want to use in the Spanned array.

#5RCPPKPICTTC[TGSWKTGUQTOQTGHTGGJCTFFKUMU

7. Click Next and the following screen shot will appear.

12

8. Click Finish and the following screen shot will appear.

A Spanned Array has been created.

13

3. Initializing NVRAID Array Disks

Now that the two-disk array has been created, it needs to be partitioned
and formatted.
1. Click on StartSettingsControl Panel.
2. Double click on Administrative Tools.
3. Double click on Computer Management.
4. Click on Disk Management. The following screen is displayed.

14

5. The 153.38 GB is for the two disk striped array that was created earlier.
To create a partition on it, right click on the Unallocated partition and
select New Partition.

6. Follow the Wizard for setting up and formatting the partition. Once that
is done, you can start using the newly created stripped array.

15

4. Deleting a RAID Array

NVRAIDMAN can be used to delete an Array. To delete an Array do the
following.
1. Launch the NVRAIDMAN application and right click on the RAID array
that you want to delete (assuming that you have a RAID array already
created) as shown in the following screen shot.

The above screen shot shows that there is a Mirrored array that will be
deleted. After the Delete Array... has been selected, the following screen
shot appear.

16

2. Click Next and the following screen shot will appear.

3. Click Finish and the array will be deleted and the following screen shot
will appear showing all the free disks.

A similar process can be applied to delete any array created by NVIDIA

RAID.

17

5. Rebuilding a RAID 1 Array

Rebuilding is the process of recovering data from one hard drive to
another. All data is copied from one hard drive to another and then the
data is synchronized between the two hard drives. After creating a
mirrored array, you can rebuild the array using the following steps:
1. Go to Windows and run the NVIDIA RAID Management utility.

2. Right-click on Mirroring. Then the popup menu appears.

18

3. From the popup menu, click Rebuild Array. The NVIDIA Rebuild
Array Wizard appears.

4. Click Next. The Disk Selection page appears.

19

5. Select the drive that you want to rebuild by clicking it from the list, then
click Next. The Completing the NVIDIA Rebuild Array page appears.

6. Click Finish.

More About Rebuilding Arrays

Rebuilding Occurs in the Background
The rebuilding process takes some time to complete, and occurs in the
background so as not to affect the performance of the system.
Rebuilding Applies Only to RAID 1
Rebuilding an array works only when using RAID 1. Rebuilding does not
apply to RAID 0 and JBOD arrays.
Rebuilding applies to a degraded fault tolerant array
You can rebuild a degraded mirrored array using any available Free Disk
or Dedicated Disk.

Check BIOS Message

If you have a motherboard with built-in SATA ports, power on your system and look for an on-screen BIOS message
that refers to the SATA interface or controller. (See Figure 7.) This message indicates that the SATA interface on your
motherboard is enabled. If you do not see this message, consult the documentation supplied with your motherboard or
system to enable SATA support in the system BIOS.
If you are using a SATA PCI card, there is no need to enter BIOS Setup to enable SATA support. The card will
automatically enable SATA support after the system BIOS has loaded.

Format the Hard Drive

This chapter describes how to partition and format your new drive using the MaxBlast installation software
on a Windows system.
If you have not previously installed a SATA drive in your system, you must install a Windows driver for your SATA PCI
card or SATA-enabled motherboard or system so that Windows can recognize your new drive. For maximum
compatibility, Maxtor recommends downloading and installing the latest SATA driver from the website of the SATA
card/motherboard/system manufacturer. The latest SATA drivers for Maxtor-branded SATA cards can be downloaded
from the Worldwide Support section at www.maxtor.com.
Choose from one of the following installation scenarios:
A. Existing Windows 2000 or XP system new drive as storage only
B. Existing Windows 2000 or XP system new drive as boot drive
C. New Windows 2000 or XP system or replacing a failed 2000 or XP boot drive
Special notes for installation scenario B:
The DOS version of MaxBlast does not currently support USB mouse or keyboard input unless supported by your system BIOS.
If you have a USB keyboard and/or mouse, you may need to connect a PS/2 mouse or keyboard to your system temporarily to
navigate through the program. MaxBlast for DOS can be operated from the keyboard using the Tab, Enter/Return, and arrow keys.
To boot from the MaxBlast CD, you may need to change the boot sequence or boot order settings in your system BIOS to Floppy
CDROM IDE-0 or A, CDROM, C. Depending on your BIOS type (AMI, Award, Phoenix), the boot sequence settings may be located
on the main setup screen or under the BIOS FEATURES SETUP or ADVANCED CMOS SETUP menus.
If your system cannot boot from a CD, you can create a bootable MaxBlast diskette by inserting the MaxBlast CD into a system
running Windows and choosing Create MaxBlast Installation Diskette from the menu. If you have dual optical (CD/DVD) drives,
try booting from the other optical drive.

C. New Windows 2000 or XP System or Replacing a Failed 2000 or XP Boot Drive

Before you begin. The SATA host driver for motherboards with embedded SATA controllers, or non Maxtor branded SATA hosts,
are typically contained on an installation CD that is included with the motherboard or add-in controller. The SATA host drivers
must first be extracted to a floppy disk before installing the operating system. Drivers for Maxtor-branded SATA cards can be
downloaded from the Worldwide Support section at www.maxtor.com or extracted to floppy from the bootable MaxBlast CD.
Boot your system from the MaxBlast CD.

1.

PAGE 13 - ENGLISH

MAXTOR SERIAL ATA HARD DRIVE INSTALLATION GUIDE

Set the Boot Sequence (New boot drive only)

The final step is to configure your system BIOS to use your SATA drive as the system boot drive. Your system has a
built-in BIOS Setup utility that allows you to change this setting.
1.

Power on the system and look for an on-screen message indicating which function key to press to enter Setup.
(See Figure 8.) The function keys used for entering Setup vary between manufacturers. The most common Setup
function keys are F1, F2, and DEL.

Refer to your system manual for specific information about your system BIOS.
On some newer systems, the function key message for entering Setup disappears before you get a chance to read the screen.
Also, some monitors are slow to display text when powering up the system, so you may need to restart your computer to read the
message. To make it easier to read the function key message, press the Pause/Break key after the memory count to pause the
boot process. The Pause/Break key is usually located in the upper right corner of your keyboard (see Figure 8).
Press the Enter key to resume system boot.

2.

Immediately after the function key message appears, press the indicated key to enter Setup.
Within the Setup utility, navigation is limited to keyboard commands. Keyboard instructions
are usually located somewhere on the Setup screen.

3.

Configure the Boot Sequence or Boot Order setting so that the SATA drive or interface is
detected first. This will enable the SATA drive to be used as the boot drive.
On some newer systems, you may be able to set the boot order of individual SATA drives
in BIOS Setup.

4.
