I.
Introduction
Inthisexperiment,therelationshipbetweenmassanditseffectontheperiodofa
pendulumwasstudied.Theproblemwastographicallyandmathematicallymodelthe
relationshipbetweentheforceofgravityandmassforamass.Thehypothesiswasifthemass
increasedthentheforceofgravitywouldincrease.Whenthemassincreases,itwillbepulled
morebygravity,thenitwillpushmoreonthemassholder,thenthemassholderwillpullonthe
springscalemore.Theindependentvariablewasmass.Thedependentvariablewastheforce
ofgravity.Thecontrolledvariablewerealtitude,amountofexternalforces,andthespringscale.

II.Procedure
Materials:
150g,1100g,2200gmasses
SpringScale
50gMassHolder
ControlTest
Withzerogramsofmass,thereiszeronewtonsofforcefromgravity
Procedure:
1. Zerospringscalewithoutanymassonit.
2. Hook50gmassholderontospringscale.
3. Place50gmassontomassholderandrecordforcevalueonspringscale.
4. placemassestotallingto150g,2500g,350g,and450gonmassholderand
recordforcevalueonspringscaleforeach.
5. Repeatsteps3and4forasecondtrial.

V.Conclusion
Thehypothesisiswasifthemassincreasedthentheforceofgravitywouldincrease.The
procedureconsistedofmeasuringtheforcethatgravityputsondifferentsamountsofmass,
measuredwithaspringscale.Specificdatapointsthatsupportthehypothesiswereat100gwith
1.43Nandat500gwith5.13N.Thetrendlineofthegraphhasapositiveslope.Themathematical
modelwas F orceofGravity = 0.00923(Ng ) + 0.468Newtons .Therelationwasdirect.The
hypothesiswassupportedbythisbecauseasthemasswasincreased,theforcethatgravity
hadonitincreasedintheexperiment.Oneerrorthatoccurredinthisexperimentisthatthe
massesusedcouldhavechipsinthemthatwouldmakeitslightlylighterthanwhatitsaysitis.
Thiswouldlowertheforceofgravityforanydatapointsthatlightenedmasseswereusedin.A
mistakethatoccurredintheexperimentisthatthespringscalewouldconstantlybounceafter
anymasswasaddedortakenoffofthemassholder.Measurementsoftheforceofgravityon
themassesweretakenbeforethespringscalefinishedbouncing,takinganumberfromaround
themiddleofthebounce.Thiscausemeasurementstobelessaccuratetowhatthespring
scalemightmeasureifitwereallowedtosettle.
