SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

Anyone who has been to Indore even for a day knows that commuting in the city can be a
nightmare. The commercial capital of central India is growing fast it is expected to house 2.79
million people by 2021. It is, in fact, one of the fastest growing Tier-II cities in the country,
according to the Ministry of Urban Development. It is also one of the five demo cities (besides
Mysore, Pune, Naya Raipur and (Pimpri-Chinchwad ) under the Ministrys Global Environment
Facility- funded Sustainable Urban Transport Project (SUTP).
In 2010, the city had 1.18 million vehicles, and with income levels rising, more private vehicles
are being added. Each year, the city adds 10 per cent more. The citys growth story has brought
with it traffic congestion, delay, accidents and suffocating pollution levels. In such a scenario, a
Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) seems like a good idea.
The BRTS project started in 2007 under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission
(JNNURM). It involves the participation of the Governments of India and Madhya Pradesh, and
the World Bank. Under the SUTP, the Global Environment Facility will fund the setting up of the
GPS-enabled Intelligent Transport System (ITS) on the BRTS.
The ITS architecture will boast, among other high-tech features, of advance signal systems based
on data-centric algorithms for emergency pre-emption and network surveillance with CCTV
cameras. The SUTP also envisages support for the BRTS through two Traffic Signal
Prioritization and Automatic Fare Collection plans. These include traffic signal co-ordination
with adaptive signal control and a centralized traffic control centre managing 46 traffic signals
and priority for BRTS buses.
The BRTS will have Automatic Fare Collection System (AFCS), which will facilitate off-board
fare collection. There will also be a Ticket Office Terminal for issuing contactless smart cards.
Under the AFCS, fares will be collected by a private company on behalf of Indore City Transport
Services Ltd.
On this issue the researcher have observed that 10 corridors are required would be launched in
toto. Where is so far only one corridor that is AB road is launched so far? Capping this aspect in
view it can be safely assumed that most of the respondents are not fully aware of the coverage of
I-BUSES. Only 26.9% of the respondents have agreed that I-BUS would be a convenient mode
of transport to move anywhere in the city. Out of the total respondents 47.5% have replied that
these buses would not be able to cover majority part of the city. Looking to the speed of the
progress in the matter all the 10 corridors would take a considerable time and hence till that time
any success of the development would lead to positive attitude towards reply of this question.
Zebra crossing, it is a mode point is to weather passengers movement on the road would be
affected or there would be ease of movement, if all the routes related to zebra crossing could be

maintained by the authorities. However, looking to the existing situation only 40.12% of the
respondents have reported that I-BUS would not affect pedestrian movement of the major
squares. It may be reported here that project of this volume would have 21 squares or bus stops.
On all the major hallmark spots in the city at this junction, it is difficult to comment weather
pedestrian movement would be affected or not and it what degree. However it is felt that
authorities would be quite serious on this issue it would like to maintain as much as possible
zebra crossing disciplines. This believed that this point will be taken into consideration seriously
by authorities. Nevertheless, the cost may be more but it is associated with the life of passenger
and success of the project. It is a very sorry state of affaire that BRTS authorities have not come
up to the expectation. So as to match expectations of the public. Resultantly, 45.60% of the
people respondents have commented that BRTS method would meet maximum expectation is
deemed earlier perhaps, this data is outcome of media criticism of high lighting negative aspects
of the system. Still, as the project will progress, the positivity on this issue would also be
improved a lot. Let us hope that most of the expectation would definitely would be met on
successful and speedy completion of the project. No such facility as will be provided by BRTS
can work on no profit no loss. Of course, in the beginning it can have some discounts but in the
later stages on the cost should cover expenses also gradually. However, smartcard holders should
definitely yet a significant profitability over general ticket holders. This opinion is also endorsed
by respondent as 46% have agreed to this contention of making this as self sustaining venture.
The current not-so-successful story of BRTS corridor can be explained by lack of proper
planning before implementing it. The technical knowhow of the BRTS system from western
countries has been just copied over to INDORE without the modification required to make it
successful in India. To make the system successful, stress has to be made on the
supporting infrastructure. Also, a proper regulatory environment is needed to enforce rules and
regulations where needed.
