Ranking of Graduate Programs in Anthropology

The following ranking of graduate programs in anthropology is done by the National Research Council. It is
based on the scholarly quality of the faculty and the effectiveness of the program in educating research
scholars/scientists. The listing and a discussion of the method of research for this ranking appear in The
Chronicle of Higher Education, September 22, 1995. Unfortunately a more recent publication of rankings has
not been done. However, another approach to ranking anthropology graduate programs can be found at

Please note also that in FOBin the alcove between the second and third floorsthere is a recent copy of the
American Anthropological Association publication called AnthroGuide. That resource will list areas of
specialization for graduate programs, names and contact information for faculty members in that department,
names and contact information for all members of the AAA, and other useful information. We ask that the
book be used in the building so it is available to all, but please do use it.
