Subject Name/Code: Internet Technology & Network Management / IT-603
Max. Marks: 70

Time: 2 Hrs.

Note:Answer must be to the point. Part a, b is of 2 marks, part c is of 3 marks, part d, e is of 7 marks.

Q1(a). Is the size of ARP packet is fixed? Explain.

Q1(b). What is the size of an ARP packet when the protocol is IP and the hardware is Ethernet?
Q1(c). Explain Proxy ARP and its need in network.
Q1(d). A router with IP address 125.45.23.12 and Ethernet physical address 23:45:AB:4F:67:CD has received a
packet for a host destination with IP address 125.11.78.10 and Ethernet physical address AA:BB:A2:4F:67:CD.
Show the entries in ARP request packet sent by the router.
or
Q1(e). Explain four different cases of ARP.
Q2(a). In an IP packet, the value of HLEN is 516 and the value of the total length field is 002816. How many bytes of
data are being carried by this packet?
Q2(b). Which field of the IP header change from router to router? Can the value of the header length in an IP
packet be less than 5?
Q2(c). Justify the need of fragmentation and discuss the fields related to it.
Q2(d). A host in a network has 201.70.64.6 IP address and subnet mask 255.255.255.224. Find out: (i) No. of
addresses(ii) No. of Subnets(iii) No. of host/Subnet (iv) Subnet ID (v) Broadcast ID
or
Q2(e). In a datagram, the M bit is zero, the value of HLEN is 5, the value of total length is 200, and the offset value
is 200. What is the number of first byte and number of the last byte in this diagram? Is this the first fragment,
middle fragment or last fragment?
Q3(a). If two computers are 5000 miles apart, what is the minimum time for a message to go from one to other?
[Assume: data travels at 2*108meters/second and 6.2 miles=10 kilometer]
Q3(b). Name the different type of messages used by ICMP protocol.
Q3(c). What is supernetting? How it is different then subnetting? Compare supernet mask and subnet mask.
Q3(d).How flow control is implemented in ICMP? Why is there a restriction on the generation of an ICMP
message in response to a failed ICMP error message?
or
Q3(e). A computer sends a timestamp request to another computer. It receives the corresponding timestamp
reply at 3:46:07 A.M. The values of original timestamp, receive timestamp and transmit timestamp are
13,560,000, 13,562,000 and 13,564,300, respectively. What is sending time, receiving time and round trip time?
What is the difference between the sender clock and receiver clock?
Q4(a). What is Fragmentation and reassembly of packet?
Q4(b). What are the special cases of IP address?
Q4(c). Give an example of a situation in which a host would never receive a redirection message.
Q4(d)Explain ping and traceroute with example.
or
Q4(e). What are different types of error-reporting messages in ICMP?
Q5(a). Contrast and compare distance vector routing with link state routing.
Q5(b). A router running RIP has a routing table with 20 entries. How many periodic timer, expiration timer,
garbage collection timers are needed to handle this table?[Assume: 5 routes are invalid]
Q5(c). Explain Intra-Domain and Inter-Domain routing.
Q5(d). A router has following RIP routing table (table T1):
What would be the contents of the table if router receives the following RIP message from
Net 1 4 B
router C(table T2):[Assume that router C is 1 hop away]

Q5(e). Draw the autonomous system (network) with following specification:
(a)There are 8 networks (N1 to N8). (b) There are 8 routers (R1 to R8). (c) N1, N2,N3,N4,N5 &N6 are Ethernet
LANs. (d) N7 & N8 are point-to-point WANs. (e) R1 connects N1 and N2. (f) R2 connects N1 and N7. (g) R3
connects N2 and N8. (h) R4 connects N7 and N6. (i) R5 connects N6 and N3.(j) R6 connects N6 and N4. (k) R7
connects N6 and N5.(l) R8 connects N8 and N5.
