Bishop Borys Gudziak

Facing a Triple Crisis

Ukraine is facing a tri ple crisis: an economic chasm,
the political challenge of reforming entirely the elite, the
administration, the political culture at a time of the third
critical factor war is really an incredible challenge, said Bishop Borys Gudziak.

For society, for the population one very important thing

is to try and remember well
its successful methodology, the
methodology of a year ago, when
great solidarity was expressed and
the people of Ukraine really began
believing that they can affect
change. It becomes very difficult
when we dont believe, if we
loose spirit and its not surprising
with all of these crises if people of
Ukraine are getting tired, are getting a bit anxious about the future.
When will this end? How can it
end? So I think the moral question
No. 5

and the question of moral is very

important for Ukraine today, the
bishop told Hromadske Internationals Nataliya Gumenyuk.
Ukrainian lawmakers and ordinary citizens alike need to start
thinking about how to reconcile
the war-torn country, Bishop
Gudziak said. While reconciliation
might seem an impossible task
right now, it is not.
Bishop Gudziak spoke about
reconciliation between French and
Germans after World War II, as
well as the Ukrainians and the
Poles as examples of how enemies
3

can mend relations. Both reconciliations once seemed impossible, but

occurred in the bishops lifetime.
The same type of reconciliation is
possible in Ukraine, the bishop
said.
As part of the reconcilation
process, Russia and Ukraine will
also have to mend their relationship.
The first step to make is to
realise that Donbas will not move
to Texas, Russia will not split off
with Antarctica and become a separate continent from Ukraine. We
are, so to speak, condemned to
seek reconciliation. It will require
soul-searching, it will require an
examination of conscious . I
know for a fact that Russians will
have to face up to the question of
this aggression, and why they supported their leader in this aggression, otherwise the reconciliation
will be impossible. We need to
look and find those people who
can speak the truth, who can recognise the truth and find ways of
communicating it to others, the
bishop said.
Bishop Guzdiak said it was
frustrating to see how slowly reforms were taking place in Ukraine
and mentioned that one year after
the shootings on Maidan, it was
saddening to think that the shooters had not been brought to justice,
or even identified.
Gumenyuk asked the bishop
about the international communitys role in the conflict in Ukraine.
Bishop Gudziak said the West is
slowly realizing the crisis in
Ukraine and war on the countrys
eastern border is a thread to European security as well Ukrainian
sovereignty.

Ladder
of
Divine
Ascent

here is something
about charts, methods, tables and the
like that always make
me react in a negative
manner. There is a form of
rationalism that, for me,
simply screams, This is the
work of man. A Linaeus
can invent a table for classifying nature and Im
sure that biologists find it
very helpful. But there is
something irrational at the
same time about nature in
which everything resists
classification.

The

most frustrating example

of this was my experience in geology
lab in college. I always did well with
the book and the lectures, rarely making
a mistake on exams in that area of the
course. But one day per week was given
over to lab work. In geology this consisted of boxes of rocks. Each of the
boxes were labeled. We experimented
and learned to use the various techniques for identifying qualities that
would allow us to say, This is feldspar, or This is quartzite, etc.
I would go every week and do
everything I was told. Indeed I strained
what brain I had to learn these classifying techniques. The exam would finally
came. And, surprise, the rocks we had
to identify were samples we had never
seen. We had seen other samples of
similar rocks, but not these particular
rocks.
My frustration was that I was
invariably learning what a rock was by
learning that particular rock. I invariably flunked the lab test. This is probably
only a revelation about the way my
brain is wired. But it left me suspicious
of classifications. I know they are real
but my brain just wont work that way.
This month, the Church celebrates St. John Climacus, the
author of the great spiritual classic known as the Ladder. It offers 30 steps in the spiritual life, with the notion
that we cannot go from one rung of the ladder to the
next without mastering what has gone before. It is orthodoxys 12 steps, only, of course, there are 30 of them.
The Ladder makes for good Lenten reading. Each
topic is worthy of everything that is written. I have even
gleaned insight into various things by reading it. But I
have always wondered if thats exactly how things work.
First this step, then that one.
It may be a general description, but I suspect that
grace works in a less predictable fashion. As far as I can
tell I am still on the first rung. I know some things and
even have experience of other rungs, mastery of none.
My own ladder is to pray for grace for whatever
rung lies before me. The sin that threatens me at any
given moment. I suppose its a spontaneous ladder.
What is truly amazing about St. John, was that he
knew the spiritual life so well, and was in such a state of
soul, that he could write authoritatively about so many
vices and virtues. Perhaps his prayers will hold the ladder steady so that lesser souls such as mine may climb
with care the ladder God has set before us.

,,

A man of insight told me this: "

I was
once sitting at an assembly,"he said.
The demon of vainglory and the demon
"
of pride came to sit on either side of me.
One poked me with the finger of vainglory and encouraged me to talk publicly about some vision or labor of mine in
the desert. I shook him off with the
words, 'Let those who wish me harm be
driven back and let them be
ashamed' (Ps. 39:15). Then the demon
on my left at once said in my ear, 'Well
done! Well done! You have become
great by conquering my shameless
mother.' Turning to him I answered
appropriately, making use of the rest of
the verse, 'Defeat and shame on all who
say, "
Well done! Well done!""
And how is
it, I asked him, that vainglory is the
mother of pride?"His answer was this,
Praise exalts and puffs me up, and
"
when the soul is exalted, pride lifts it up
as high as heaven-and then throws it
down into the abyss."

Most Reverend Metropolitans, Archbishops and Bishops,

Very Reverend and Reverend Fathers, Venerable Religious and Monastics,
Beloved Brothers and Sisters, in Ukraine and throughout the world
Glory to Jesus Christ!
Lent - a special period of the liturgical year, a spiritual awakening and cleaning. The Lord encourages
us to attention and reflect on personal life, our relationship to God and neighbor; invites us to test how
well we experience the historical circumstances in which we have to pass this year path of Lent.
Our relationship to God is our faith. Living in complete trust in God and witness His active presence in
our lives through prayer, we find in him a source of hope - become strong His power and His love gives
us new life. To live with faith in God - means continually updated. In particular, during the Lenten journey we must endure "spiritual reform-renewal" - turning to God.
This conversion we traditionally call repentance, directing all thoughts, desires and aspirations to God,
the restoration of the ability to fight evil, strengthening resistance lies. True repentance is not only deep
inner nature and is not just our personal relationship with God. Just as sin spreads around us death and
destruction, conversion to our Creator has the ability to beneficially affect our society. That is why the
post - period conversion, penance and prayer - we call time revival, renewal and healing believer, and
through it the whole society - the power and action of the Holy Spirit.
Fighting evil, falsehood and sin is a matter not only of individuals. As people able to resist aggression
attacker only united, together, just personal spiritual revival of Christian life is impossible without upgrading its relations with neighbors. No real fasting and prayer without charity, as you can not love God
without noticing pain neighbor. On this occasion, the Lord tells us, "That's Fast, dating, break the
shackles of injustice, to undo the yoke solved at liberty to release the oppressed, to break every yoke,
his bread with the hungry to share, enter the house of the poor, the homeless, seeing naked, wear it on
your brother not hide "(Isa. 58: 6-7). Like St. Augustine teaches, noting that the first step in the Lenten
journey be a step towards the neighbor: "Love your neighbor and then look inside himself where this
nascent love of God and see how you would be possible" (Treatise on the Gospel of John 17, 7-9).
By calling us to repentance conscience - the voice of God in our souls, our true "I", which will meet
with the light of God's truth. Right experienced Lent strengthens this voice allows us to better hear it,
not silence it without losing the brightness of God's truth in our hearts and not gone astray.
However, not only a few people can zamulyuvaty his conscience and indulge in self-deception. History
and reality show us that this state of flow goals of society. Therefore, every person, society also needs
renovation, conversion and look at themselves in the light of Truth.
Christian love is manifested in social terms as social justice. Conversely, social injustice is both evil and
falsehood and sin. That's why the first step in a national repentance should be a revival of justice for

those who are weakest, the most vulnerable and most in need. "Blessed is he that considereth the poor
and needy - in hard times God will save it" (Ps. 41: 2).
The court shall cease to be valid if not looking for the truth, and the judge - when acting against God's
truth and His law.
One of the indicators of social conscience in the state is the judiciary, as evidence of the moral health of
the state is a fair trial, which is the basis for a viable law of God. This Court is meeting point between
God's truth and personal and social life of the citizen. It ceases to be valid if not looking for the truth,
and the judge - when acting against God's truth and His law. Lord instructs judges words of Scripture:
"Look what you're doing, because you are doing is not for the court, as to the Lord, and he shall be with
you when you judge. Suppose, therefore, will you fear the Lord: proceed with caution because the Lord
our God, there lies no storonnychosty or pidkupstva "(2 Chron. 19, 5-7). Earthly judges must not forget
that before God and they defendants because he calls himself Lord Judge and Final Judgment - "highest
authority" - leaves himself, for his "judgment is righteous" (cf. Jn. 5, 30).
We all know that the unjust court can be an instrument of violence and reprisals against human, means
of repression and neglect the dignity of the whole nation. Each wrong and injustice impressive, but
wrong and injustice which people undergo where it should protect against injustice strikes and hurts
much stronger and denies hope. In our country most people feel helpless just before the judiciary, as is
the need for judicial reform in us or not acute.
And fast, and reforms need to self, work on yourself, which can even be painful. This year, the preparation of the Passover of the Lord will be marked scourge of war and economic hardship. Let our endurance in the struggle for freedom and a better future of their people updated through voluntary self-denial
for renewal of private and public life, personal sacrifice for the victory of love over hatred.
We Christians know that the result of this reform, renewal depends not only on us, and on our first accord with God by keeping two prerequisites real fast - prayer and almsgiving. Prayer opens us to God,
He invites us to act, and charity, to others and the overcoming of injustice in the world, is voluntary
mortification of our evil inclinations for pilgrimage to the resurrection.
Let renewed strength of the Christian faith, hope and love gives us certainty in the inevitability of the
victory of God's justice over injustice - the victory over every enemy, internal and external, that rebels
against God and the dignity of man, created in His image and likeness. "Nevertheless, brethren, rejoice,
strive for excellence, get excited, be of one mind, live peacefully, and the God of love and peace shall be
with you" (II Cor. 13, 11).

Musical Lenten Mission with Julian Kytasty

A tapestry of chants and dumas, retelling ancient lenten meditations of the kobzari and lirnyky. Accompanied by his old-world style Bandura, Julian Kytasty's
music flows from lamenting Christ's passion to themes
of death and life, penance and forgiveness. Most recently, Julian Kytasty recorded the soundtrack to the
Academy-Award nominate film "The Guide." The
performance will take place inside of the darkened St.
Joseph Church, lit by candles, saints painted on its
walls, at 7pm on Saturday, March 21st.
