Todays technology for tomorrow

Micafils AirRIP outdoor transformer bushings are the product

of a sophisticated design using a small number of components:
insulating body, main flange, insulator shell and current
c onductor. They are produced in a wide variety of d esigns
and thus can easily fulfil specific customer requirements.
A irRIP bushings are completely dry, pressurized, explosionproof, fire-resistant and allow high application temperatures.

Outer insulation
For decades, porcelain has proved its worth as a material for
outer insulation. With the development of composite hollow
insulators in recent decades an alternative has gained market
maturity. Our customers appreciate the benefits these offer,
such as reduced weight, easier handling, and the explosion
safety characteristics of these silicone composite insulators.
We offer the AirRIP bushings both with silicone composite
insulators as well as with porcelain insulators.

RIP insulation
Capacitor bushings enable control of electric field distribution
in radial and axial directions by inserting conductive layers
in the insulator body. The insulating body of the Micafil RIP
(Resin Impregnated Paper) s ystem consists of wound strips
of crepe paper. Aluminium foils of graduated lengths are
wrapped at exactly calculated points.
The wrap is heated, vacuum dried, as well as impregnated
and cured under vacuum with an epoxy resin formulated by
ABB. The impregnation process requires high skills in setting
and in the control of process parameters, as well as a broad
knowledge and experience in the field of materials science
and in materials selection.
We have developed our expertise over decades and gained
market experience as first-class supplier. The result is RIP
bushings with very good thermal and chemical resistance
and high mechanical strength and stiffness.

AirRIP stands for quality and versatility

High-voltage bushings must meet the highest standards of
operational safety and minimize the risk of damage for people
and facilities. The greatly increased and growing environmental awareness requires gentle production and clean operation.
The Micafil AirRIP series meets these requirements thanks to
high-quality materials and reliable processing techniques. The
technical standard is very high and development and manufacturing processes are regularly reviewed. High product quality is ensured with comprehensive testing during production
and in the electrical testing laboratory.

Advantages of Micafil AirRIP technology

Dry bushings
In line with our product philosophy of compact design and dry
bushing, the space between the insulating body and insulator
is filled with the time-tested dry filler MICAGEL. MICAGEL is
poured in a liquid form into the bushing and after curing forms
a compressible dry filling.

The bushing in principle

(for example: bushing for cable conductor)

Insulating body
The core of the AirRIP bushing is the insulating body of RIP
with capacitor inserts for electric field control. The production of RIP is based on time-tested and proven technology.
Complex production processes compress the material into
a compact, liquid and gas-tight insulating body, which complies with current partial discharge and temperature requirements.
To accommodate current transformers, the lower body part
can be extended in steps of 100 mm up to 600 mm. The
short oil side is consistent with our proven and balanced
dimensioning and optimizes the strength of the interface
between the insulating body and transformer oil. These
dimensions also guarantee a high level of interchangeability
with older bushing types.

Flange and insulator

The insulator is the supporting part of the bushing and takes
over the mechanical loads with the two integrated fittings,
head and flange. The flange not only holds the insulating
body, it also forms the lower fitting of the insulator. The connection to the transformer takes place via the flange plate
bolted to the flange.
With a multiple O-ring system, the transition between body
and flange is oil-and gas-tight. The aluminium alloy used for
this purpose is corrosion-resistant and mechanically robust.
This ensures safe control of the bending moments in occurring operating stresses or in bending test loads. The whole
series is designed and type-tested in accordance with the
highest bending load class of IEC 60137 (2008).
The standard flange plate bolt circles conform to currently
common dimensions. Deviations can easily be executed as
variants. The flange is equipped with a test tap and has an
opening (M12) with a closure screw that can be used to deaerate the transformer or as connector for a Buchholz relay.
Also mounted on the flange: identification tag, connection
thread M12 for the flange earthing and, with larger bushings,
eyebolts for lifting purposes.
The head of the bushing closes the bushing and carries the
current conductor fixing. The 420 kV and 550 kV bushings
have a separate shield to avoid external corona discharges.

Oil side end

The shape of the opening ensures that no shield electrodes
are required up to 73 kV. We offer shielding as a variant.
From 123 kV, depending on current conductor version,
either fixed shields (cable conductors) or removable shields
(rod conductor and fixed conductor) are used, which are
attached to the end of the bushing. They prevent the excessive use of transformer oil and facilitate the assembly of the
conductor insulation beneath the bushing.
Our shield electrodes are dimensioned using modern methods
and their surface is provided as standard with a high-quality
solid insulation layer.
Please note our installation recommendations.

Choice of insulator

The choice of insulator type has no influence on the perform

ance of the bushing.
Please note corresponding weights as well as head and shed
diameters for each insulator type.

Silicone composite insulators made of glass fibrereinforced tube with helical or straight sheds
Hydrophobicity and the ability to transfer these properties
also to foreign layers is the most important value-added
feature of these insulators. They have many advantages:
Excellent contamination behaviour due to hydrophobic
s urface properties and low leakage currents
Improved safety for personnel and equipment
Lower weight

Porcelain insulators made of high-quality

electrical porcelain, brown and grey
High-quality electrical porcelain for decades an excellent,
proven material is available as always in the standard
c olour brown and alternatively in light grey.

Creepage distances
All types of insulation are made with alternate shed profiles.
Creepage distances are measured for the high pollution
requirements of IEC 60 815:

Choice of current conductor

The rated current is the starting point for choosing the type
of conductor.
However, current levels of conductor types partially overlap
and can be selected according to individual preferences.
Please follow the respective icons when making your choice.

Low currents with cable conductor

The current is led through a multi-stranded
flexible conductor joined to the terminal of
the winding. The lead is drawn up through
the central tube of the bushing and provided
with the top connector (cable bolt) that is
fastened to the bushing head. In the standard model, the air
side terminal is a round, bare copper bolt. As an option, the
surfaces can be silver- or nickel-plated and other terminal
sizes can be selected.
To avoid unnecessary contact junctions, the draw lead bolt is
of a single-piece design. A tried-and-tested fixing device with
few parts ensures that no inadvertent displacement in axial
direction or twisting is possible. It also allows the positioning
of the cable bolt to 10 mm from nominal dimensions.
The manufacturers of the transformers must provide the conductor cable with a thin insulation in order to keep transient
voltages to the central bushing tube.

High currents with fixed conductor

Bushings with a directly wound and nonremovable conductor are suitable for
high currents. Various terminal solutions are
available, see data tables and figures.

Current data
The type designation of the bushings contains the standard
current according to IEC 60137 (2008). The actually perm is
sible operating currents depend on the lower part extension
L6 and are shown in the data tables.

Air side terminal

The standard air side terminal mentioned in the data tables
covers the entire current range of the bushing.

Medium currents with removable

rod conductor
For a better current utilization of the bushing
with central tube, it is equipped with
a removable conductor rod of copper.
In the standard model, the air side terminals
are bare. As an option, the surfaces can be silver- or nickelplated and the shapes of the terminals can be selected. The
rod conductor can be fitted with a joint, usually near the flange.
Various terminal shapes are available for their lower end.
Conductor installation and de-aeration of the central tube are
similar in both the version with rod conductor and with cable
conductor.

In case the full current range of the bushing is not utilized as

an option one may use smaller dimensions, as long as above
rules are observed.

Please note: The rod conductor is a separate component

and must be selected separately.

If overload capacity is required for the transformer according

to IEC 60076-7 (normal load cycles), the rated current of the
bushing should be chosen with at least 120% of the transformer-rated current, in accordance with IEC 60137 (2008).

Recommended installation
Our bushings are designed and tested for mineral oil appli
cations. The field strengths in oil on the lower part of the
bushing depend on the shape of the surrounding parts, as
well as on the quality and the conditions of the transformer oil.
As a guideline, the following table shows the respective
d istances A to grounded transformer parts under standard
conditions.
They are valid for the oil side ends (standard and variants) as
per the data tables. Due to limiting conditions additional
insulating measures or larger distances may be necessary.
Uninsulate edges around the bushing should be rounded
to R min = 5 mm.
