NMEA SPLITTER
GENERAL
The unit buffers, and re-transmits, received NMEA 0183 serial data.
In standard P1016 configuration, the unit will accept NMEA 0183 data on one input channel and
re-transmit that data on each of the six output channels.
Alternative 2-3 factory configuration is available (P1016 / 2-3) for splitter to accept serial data
on two input channels with the three associated output channels per input channel being
available for re-transmission of the received serial data.
The aluminium alloy diecast box houses a single pcb, which contains all necessary connection
terminals. The unit requires a 24vDC power supply and a diode is fitted for polarity protection.
The input power terminals are linked to an adjacent set of terminals in order to provide a means
of connecting the input 24vDC supply through to other equipment if required. LEDs are fitted to
the pcb for information and diagnostic purposes. An L shaped plate is used to clamp cable
screens to the base mounting plate, and hence to ships earth, via the connected earth lead.
All messages are re-transmitted at the rate at which they are input.
See drawing 3396-A3-7 for connections to Standard P1016 (1 IN - 6 OUT) NMEA Splitter.
See drawing 3396-A3-8 for connections to P1016 / 2-3 (2 IN - 2x3 OUT) NMEA Splitter.
Power consumption, at 24vDC, is 30mA.
INSTALLATION
The unit is not watertight and must be fitted below deck in a protected position that will allow
for connection of the talker/s, the 24vDC power supply, and also the NMEA re-transmit / output
channels. Accessibility of the box, both for diagnostic purposes, and for any possible future
replacement, also needs to be taken into consideration. Four mounting holes, 3.5mm in diameter,
are provided externally in the base plate for mounting to either a horizontal or to a vertical
surface.
A slot in the side of the box allows for cable entry and the L shaped plate with its attached
conductive fabric wrap allows exposed screens of the cables concerned to be clamped to the
conductive fabric wrap attached to the base plate. The L shaped clamp plate runs on two M3
pan head screws and having brought the plate down sufficiently to compress the fabric wrap
against the laid in cables / screens, hold the plate in position and tighten the screws to secure
cables.
See drawing 3396-A3-5: Installation Drawing of the P1016 NMEA Splitter.

CABLING
A 2 core screened cable, 16/0.2mm (0.5mm CSA), is required for connecting the ships 24vDC
supply to the P1016.
DC power connections to the P1016 Interface are as follows:
SHIPS SUPPLY
+24v
0v
Screen
P1016 POWER
TERMINAL CONNECTION
+V POWER CONN J2 / J3
0V POWER CONN J2 / J3
FABRIC WRAP
Whichever of the two available 2 way POWER connectors is used for 24vDC IN, the other 2
way POWER connector may be used to provide 24vDC OUT to other equipment if required.
A twisted pair cable with 16/0.2mm (0.5mm CSA) cores with an overall screen is recommended
for connecting the input NMEA 0183 serial data. Note that the screen is not connected at the
P1016 (receiver) end.

SCREEN
Only one input channel is used when the unit is configured as a standard P1016 NMEA splitter
(1 IN / 6 OUT). Either CH1 or CH2 may be used.
If the unit is configured as a 2 IN / 2x3 OUT NMEA splitter (P1016 / 2-3) both CH1 and CH2
input channels will be used.
A twisted pair cable with 16/0.2mm (0.5mm CSA) cores with an overall screen is recommended
for each connected NMEA 0183 output channel. Note that the screen is connected at the P1016
(talker end) only.

CABLING: continued
Note that when configured as a 2 IN / 2x3 OUT NMEA splitter unit (P1016 / 2-3), INPUT CH1
messages are transmitted on OUTPUT CH1 / CH 3 / CH5. INPUT CH2 messages are output on
OUTPUT CH2 / CH4 / CH6.
See drawing 3396-A3-7: Connection Diagram for Standard P1016 NMEA Splitter.
See drawing 3396-A3-8: Connection Diagram for P1016 / 2-3 NMEA Splitter.
Note that cables up to 1.5mm CSA maximum can be used with the cable mount screw terminals
provided with the P1016 unit.
MAINTENANCE
SERVICING:
No routine maintenance or servicing is required. In the event of a unit failure with received serial
data not being re-transmitted to the connected equipment, the P1016 unit must be replaced.
FAULT FINDING:
6 LEDs on the main pcb assembly are for diagnostic and fault finding purposes and can be used
to provide confirmation of power input, received serial data, transmitted serial data and also
internal 5v power line status.
Individual LED information is as follows:
Red LED (D6), above and to the right of the POWER connections, constantly lit if incoming 24v
DC supply has been wired incorrectly into the 2 way cable mount screw terminal. (SWITCH
POWER OFF AND REVERSE FITTED CORES INTO 2 WAY CABLE MOUNT SCREW
TERMINAL TO PROVIDE CORRECT POWER CONNECTIONS. RE-APPLY POWER. LED
(D6) WILL BE UNLIT)
+5V: Green LED (D30), constantly lit to indicate correct operation of internally generated
positive 5 volt line.
RX CH1: Green LED (D43), flashes with bursts of serial data received on INPUT CH1
connector.
RX CH2: Green LED (D45), flashes with bursts of serial data received on INPUT CH2
connector.
Note that both RX CH1 and RX CH2 LEDs operate simultaneously in normal P1016 (1 IN / 6
OUT) configuration regardless of which input channel is connected.
RX CH1 and RX CH2 LEDs would operate independently when the unit is configured as a
P1016 / 2-3 (2 IN / 2x3 OUT) NMEA splitter.
