Varuna consists of dried stem bark of Crataeva


nurvala Buch- Ham (Fam. Caparidaceae); a small
wild or cultivated tree found throughout the year
in India, often found along streams, also in dry,
deep boulder formation in Sub-Himalayan tracts.
Trees with 3-foliolate leaves, Flowers yellow or
white with red stamens. Berry papillate.Coorg,
Hassan, Mysore, North Kanara, Shimoga, South
Asia, indomalayasia.

Asmari; Mulracchra; Gulma; Vidradhi. Bark


stimulates liver, extra used as a laxative and for
promoting appetile. Also given in calculi and
other urinary affections. Root, bark rubefacient.

Sula. Fruits known as Ajowan, Omum are
stimulant, tonic, antispasmodic and carminative,
used in flatulence, tonic, dyspepsia and
diarrhoea, also in cholera. It is also used for
relaxed sore throat and bronchitis and is a
common ingredient of cough mixtures. Fruit
paste is applied to the abdomen externally for
relif from colic. It is used in lotions and
ointments applied for checking chronic
discharge. Roots carminatative, diuretic, used in
febrile conditions and stomach disorders.
Ajowan oil obtained from fruit is used as an
aromatic, carminative and antiseptic; also
expectorant in emphysema, hronchial
pneumonia and some other respiratory
disorders. Aqueous water called Omum water
used as a carmianative in flatulence and grown.
Fatty oil from fruit used externally on rheumatic
swellings. Seeds-skin diseases, blood poisoning,
scorpion string, distaste, anorexia, indeigestion,
stomach disorders, abdominal and spleenic
disorders, worm infestation, cardiac diseases,
general debility
