BHUMI 2013 - 2014

Annual Report | Building a

more influential, equal and
socially conscious society
since 2006.

Bhumi 2013-2014

Introduction
Bhumi drives social change by
fostering an environment where young
adults & children learn, lead and thrive.
One of Indias largest independent youth volunteer nonprofit organisations, Bhumi was founded in Chennai on August 15,
2006 by a group of young friends with a passion to change society as it is today and build a better tomorrow. By
providing opportunities for adults to volunteer and deliver key education interventions to under-resourced populations, we
begin the cycle of civic engagement that will last a lifetime.

Promoting volunteerism and engaging todays youth is at the heart of our work. We recognise the importance of
volunteering as a part of building civic society in India. Only 18% of India, volunteers, and yet, activating young adults is
one of the best ways to create a just, civic society. Eight years ago we began with the idea that meaningful and
structured volunteering can lead to lasting change one engaged volunteer can change the life trajectory of up to five
children, providing them quality education and necessary supports to become self-reliant. Bhumi believes that the social,
economic and environmental returns of this intervention on our society are immense.

A morally and socially responsible individual recognises himself or herself

as a member of a larger social fabric and therefore considers social
problems to be partly his or her own; such an individual is willing to see the
moral and civic dimensions of issues, to make and justify informed moral
and civic judgments, and to take action when appropriate.

Our Work
At Bhumi, we channel volunteers into two key areas: Education and Civic Initiatives. The ripple effect of our
work is immense; in 2013-2014 alone, we mobilized 5,182 volunteers to work in 215 orphanages and dozens of short
term opportunities around the country.

I just completed one year as a science volunteer. In this one year I have witnessed the project
make an impact in every students life, making them confident, innovative and interactive, making
them learn concepts with ease. The beauty of the project lies in its interactive ways of facilitating
the learning of children. With a concrete and well defined syllabus, I am hoping the project will
impact many more kids next year

The Need - Education Initiatives

Despite the passage of the Right to Education Act and primary school enrollment at nearly 100%, the quality of
education received by those at the bottom of the socio-economic ladder needs significant improvement. Children, who
begin school already behind their middle and upper class peers, continue to fall behind, often in core subjects such as
mathematics and science as well as in language, creating a barrier for accessing higher education and suitable
employment later in life.

Bhumis interventions through supplementary education play a pivotal role in addressing engagement, motivation,
behavior and attendance; key factors in student achievement. At Bhumi, all children receive personal attention from
caring adults, explore new interests, receive academic support, develop a sense of belonging to a group and build a
sense of self-esteem - reflected in better exam scores and classroom behavior. Our work helps control dropout
rates, improves analytical thinking, enhances creativity, inculcates long term goals, and vision setting.

To ensure high quality programs Bhumi invests to strengthen

every volunteers capacity as a teacher. Thus, volunteers
receive year round support in the area of curriculum,
pedagogy, and lesson planning.

Impact
The results of our education intervention have been groundbreaking. Across all programme areas, we have seen
incredible progress; children who start the year with little or no knowledge in the subject, scoring a 100% during the end
of the year assessments. Our Speak Out English and Little Einsteins Mathematics Programmes have been the most
promising investments, with gains that translate to measurable skills and a closing education gap for children.
