OSCE stands for Objective Structured Clinical Examination. it is the RCOGs final oral exam
and is the last hurdle in paving your pressure less future. After passing the written exam
of MRCOG, you need to sit in the exam immediately. It is kind of difficult exam in regard it
scares you for your confidence and all but you still need to do it as immediately as possible to
avoid the chance of reverting back to the written exam all over again. Here I have tried to help
you overcoming your scare by providing you a guide for attempting the exam.
Format of OSCE exam:
The current OSCE comprises 12 stations, 10 of which are active in that you are examined and
marked. Preparatory stations are two in that you are given material to consider. All other 10
stations contain equal marks: 20 each and a total of 200 therefore. Each station ends in 15
minutes and includes one minute at the beginning to read and consider the question.
Things on the basis of what you are being tested includes:
Your communication skills as the prime factor
Emergencies and Prioritizations
Clinical governance
Audit and Research
Result interpretation
Operations and operative complications
Teaching including appraisal and feedback
Management strategies/planning
Developing protocol, guidelines and patient information
As mentioned communication is the prime factor, it is generally assessed by the following
factors:
How you break bad news
Your ability to take a detailed history
How you deal with a difficult or upset patient
How you explain a clinical problem to a role-player
