We have just finished a Smart story learning sequence on acts of kindness called Each
Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson. As our culminating activity, we want to reinforce the
importance of acts of kindness. We are stressing the deeper meaning of kindness, how these acts
of kindness have a ripple effect and how they can affect people in our community.
Your childs Spring Break homework assignment is to demonstrate the ripple effect of being
kind. Your child picked out 3 rocks from the playground and drew a red heart on each one. I have
asked them to perform 3 acts of kindness. Each time they perform an act of kindness they need
to give the person one of their rocks. They will also ask that person to perform an act of kindness
and pass the rock along.
I would like your child to record who they gave each rock to and the act of kindness they
performed for that person. We will be writing about these acts of kindness in our journals when
we return from the break. I have encouraged my class to try to give each rock to a different
person. They can be immediate family, friends or members of the community. For example,
showing appreciation for their coach, music teacher, artist, musician, store clerk, etc. The
definition of appreciation is recognition of the quality, value, significance, or magnitude of people
and things; and expression of gratitude.
As an additional exercise, they could follow up with each person before the end of spring break to
see what act of kindness they performed for someone else.
Thank you for your help with this project!
