Laboratory Exercise No. 2

Area Calculation
I. Objectives:
1.
2.

To be able to calculate the entire selected area using GPS receiver.

To know the total area of the MSU Golf Course

II. Materials:
GPS Receiver
Notebook
Pen
III. Procedure:
1.
Prepare the GPS receiver with a full charged battery
2.
Select a parcel of land that is subject to calculation
3.
After switching on the GPS receiver go to area calculation menu then click it.
4.
Start walking in the whole selected area (be sure to walk in your normal pacing).
5.
Going back to your starting point, record the calculated data that can be found in the
GPS receiver.
6.
Sketch the entire area/field.
IV. Data:
Table 1:

73,528

7.3528

V. Conclusion and Recommendation:

Therefore, using a GPS receiver is easier to navigate and less hassle to calculate the entire area
and its accuracy is also favorable though sometimes GPS signals are not accurate due to some
complications such as buildings, trees canopy and the like. In just a matter of few hours you will get the
total area of a land compared to the traditional land survey practices. It is best to recommend that we
should walk with our normal pacing for us to get better accuracy because the calculation process will
depend on the person whose holding the receiver on how fast the person walk.

V. Results and Discussion:

The data in table 1 shows the coordinates of the area in terms of Latitude and its Longitude. The
data was gathered by selecting an area located in MSU Fisheries Drive, then establishing a first point
where the first coordinates was taken.

VI. Conclusion and Recommendation:

As a result of this laboratory exercise by using GPS in android phone, it can be said that its
more efficient and optimum surveying technique.
