Date of Meeting: 9th March 2015

Location: Bioincubator
Time 1-5 p.m.
Attendance:
Samson Anene (SA) acts as chair
Muiz Bin Umar (MBU) acts as finance
Tanyawat Panusopit (TP)
Alex Antia (AA) acts as secretary
Adam James (AJ)
1) Feedback
The group discussed the feedback on last weeks minutes, and decided to
emphasise the implementation of recommendations in the minutes.
2) Previous Actions
- XRD
- Micro prep for XRD and SEM
3) Actions
Action: MBU took XRD results for last weeks test.
Action: Micro prep; MBU, SA, AJ at Hadfield H-floor. (1-3pm)
Action: AA and TP did SEM on metal samples. (3.30-5pm)
4) Health and Safety issues
There were no significant risks involved in this weeks activities only
supervised testing and analysis of results were carried out.
5) Budget
The current budget spend was outlined by MBU and SA, currently the
group has spent 1050 and plan to spend 375 more in 2 weeks time. Total
spending is 1425 with 575 remaining budget.
Expenditure breakdown
Micro prep 1 run
Optical microscopy 2 samples
FTIR 3 samples
XRD 1 sample
Mechanical testing 1 run
SEM

Action: SEM
SEM of the cylindrical body metal in the plane of the metal:
Backscatter:

Scan:

Spectrum:

Spectrum indicates the material is stainless steel. The exact grade is

unknown, as the equipment does not allow for that degree of precision.
SEM of the cylindrical body metal perpendicular to the plane of
the metal:

Spectrum:

This spectrum is for a darker area on the scan. It indicates that the dark
areas are particularly high in chromium.
Metal cover (shiny metal):

Spectrum indicates the material is stainless steel. The exact grade is

unknown, as the equipment does not allow for that degree of precision.
The lustre of the surface is likely due to polishing.

Spectrum:

Spectrums indicate stainless steel. The second was done to confirm the
results; the sample was mounted in an electrically active resin, and so
there was some distortion.
Action: XRD results: Last weeks XRD results were inconclusive, so the
supervisor was going to perform a longer XRD. The results were still
inconclusive, but the supervisor identified the material as steel based on
sample observation. We confirmed this with SEM (see above).
Future plans: No testing is planned for next week. We intend to do a final
review and analysis, before beginning our design.
Next meeting: 16th March 2015 from 1-4pm at the Bioincubator
