Asregardsofproducts,inspection100%inspectionismadeinatallstages
ofmanufacture.86%ofworkersatHMTLtdrespondedinfavourofthisstatement
inresponsetoQuestionNo.9.10%ofthemfeelthatinspectionofproductsisdone
atsomeofthestagesofmanufacture.However,4%ofworkersareoftheviewthat
inspectionofproductsisdoneonlyaftercompletion.Theanalysisofabovedata
revealsthatqualityoftheproductsisassuredby100%inspectioninmostofthe
casesatallstagesofmanufacture.Afewmanufacturingprocessesareinspected
onlyatthefinalstagesofcompletionofmanufacturingcycleoftheproduct.
Quality Education and Training reveals that Quality Management in
isolation cannot contribute to improve product quality, if no attention is paid
towardseducatingandbringingattitudinalchangestowardsconceptandroleof
quality ina larger context.The responses to question no.10, indicate thatthe
programsforimprovingqualityconsciousnessareheldregularly.68%ofworkers
responded in favour of this statement. 26% workers feel that sometimes such
programsforimprovingqualityconsciousnessareheld,while6%ofthemareof
theviewthatrarelyanysuchprogramforimprovingqualityconsciousnesswas

held.Theanalysisof aboveinformationreveals thatmanagementconducts the

programsforimprovingqualityconsciousnessinthemindsofworkmentoagreat
extent.However,someworkmenfeelthatsuchprogramsarenotsufficienttobring
fullawarenessandconsciousnessamongstallworkmenandsuchprogramsneedto
beincreased.
The analysis of responses to Question No. 11 given by workmen at
Hindustan Machine Tools Limited reveals that the representative/leader of the
workersalwaysgetduerepresentationinqualitymeetings.48%workmenreported
in favour of this statement. 34% of workers are of the view that sometimes
representativeorleaderofworkersgetanyrepresentationinqualitymeetings.18%
oftheworkmenwerefoundindifferent.
TheresponsestoQuestionNo.12revealthat24%ofworkersatHindustan
MachineToolsLimited,areoftheviewthatworkersofthecompanyareregularly
senttootherorganizationsforattendingqualityseminarsortalks,while28%feel
thattheyaresometimessent.48%ofworkmenstronglyfeelthatworkersarerarely
sent tootherorganizationsforattendinganyqualityseminarsortalksetc.The
responsesofQuestionNo.13&14revealthat95%oftherespondentsreported
thattheywerenotconcernedwiththecostofqualityimprovementandprofitability
enhancement.

Summary
Onthebasisoftheforegoingdiscussions,itisobservedthatHMTstop
managementiscommittedtowardsqualityandthereexistssystemsandprocedures
tospecifyqualitynormsandperformsaccordinglyandassuresconformanceto
specifications by systematic review techniques. However, there is a scope for
bringingdownreworkpercentage.Asfarasprofitabilityandfinancialstructureof
thecompanyisconcerned,itisfoundthat60%oftopmanagementfeelssatisfied
withexistingprofitabilitywhereas40%ofthetopmanagementisreallyanxiousto
raiseprofitabilitywiththehelpofqualitymanagementinthecompany.
Middle Management staff of Hindustan Machine Tools Limited is quite
conscious about quality management techniques and practices. But there is a
furtherneedforimprovingtheparticipationofmiddlemanagementemployeesby
making them more aware and conscious by imparting inhouse training and
exposingthemtooutsideorganizationsandalsotoHMTsvaluablecustomersfor
facetofacediscussionsonqualityoftheproductandqualityoftheservice.Asfar
as profitability is concerned, 90% of respondents form middle management
showedindifferentattitudetowardsprofitabilityenhancement.Only10%ofthem
showedtheirconcernforprofitabilityenhancement.Soitcanbesaidthatinspite
ofqualityconsciousness,concernforprofitabilityistoolesswhichneedstobe
improved.

WorkmenofHindustanMachineToolsLimitedarenotfullyawareofthe
qualitysystems,qualityproceduresandsuggestionschemes.Asfarasprofitability
is concerned, 95% of the workmen reported least concerned with the cost of
qualityimprovementandprofitabilityenhancement.
Onthewhole,thereisaneedtodevelopandimprovethecommunication
system to assure that all workmen fully learn the management policies about
quality,sothatqualityprogramsandmanagementsconsciousnessmayboostup
theCompanysturnoverandaddtotheprofitabilityoftheCompany.
